Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. How about this unusual top?
“I have for sale a Willys JEEP CJ2A. The jeep is currently titles as a 1972 because it is very hard in my state to get a new title. The original serial number is on the jeep. The jeep is tagged and i have driven it alot on the road. The jeep has always performed very well for me. The body has been patched over the years with new metal, (no bondo that i can see). The frame is in good shape. All the brakes have been replaced, (master cyl., wheel cyl., lines, shoes, ect. ). The wire harness has been updated to 12 volt and all the lights work fine. The 4 wheel drive also works great. The engine runs good and all the gears work fine in the trans. The water pump is new and the starter is rebuilt. I bought this jeep when i retired 5 years ago to pull a wagon with firewood out of the woods, I am older now and find it hard to get in and out of so i bought a tractor instead. This is a really fun little jeep and i hope some one will enjoy it as much as i have. This is a reserve auction and i will not reveal the price. The jeep is being sold “AS IS” with NO WARRANTY”. There is a $500.00 non-refundable deposit required within 48 hrs of end of auction. The seller provides a long, detailed list about this jeep. It also includes a food storage box (grub box). I think that is a custom top.
“It has a 4-speed gearbox with the lowest gear ratio of 6:1. The 4-cylinder, 2.3 liter Ford engine was rebuilt less than 5,000 miles ago. The Saturn overdrive was rebuilt about 1,500 miles ago. It was purchased by the current non-smoking owner in 1977 and complete maintenance records are included. The jeep is fully operational, licensed through January 2012 and can be driven as is . . . visit the bay ad to learn more.”

“1946 WIllys CJ2A Jeep custom built. Chev V8, power steering, Rancho suspension, lockers, 5.38 gears, electric overdrive, 33″ new mud terrains, Warn 8,000 lb. winch, custom SS dash with full guages, heater, CB radio, AM/FM stero, Cooper removable top, half doors, and much more! This Jeep is for the serious Jeep builder and off roader only.”

It doesn’t run at the moment, but looks solid.
“This is a 95% complete and original Willys CJ-2A. It is a perfect unmolested candidate for restoration to drive in a parade or to the beach this summer. It has always been stored indoors. The original L-134 Go Devil engine turns over freely with its own starter. I do not have time for this project and so I am choosing to sell it. I am including a spare Borg Warner T90 transmisison and Dana Spicer Model 18 transfer case for parts. Consider trade for wide front end farm tractor.”

When someone lists a jeep as ‘professionally restored’, it is only natural that I’ll examine it a little more closely. It appears sound, but sports an early CJ-2A grille, doesn’t have the bow holders, and is missing, as best as I can tell, windshield wipers. The custom looks nice. The strangest issue, in my mind, is that there is white paint around the edges of the gauges (probably just taped off the gauges), which doesn’t look all that professional to me.
