Video — History Channel Modern Marvels, The Jeep

The history channel series Modern Marvels did a fine show on the history of the jeep.  There’s some great bits of info, pictures and videos.  I think it’s worth watching, even just to watch the video of the experimental ‘jeep helicopter’.  The youtube version of this episode is divided up into 5 sections.  The nice feature is that once you start watching the first one, each successive video will be launched automatically.

My only contention with the show is that one narrator suggests that Willys invented four wheel drive.  Actually, four wheel drive had been around for about 50 years.   I wrote the following several months ago (though didn’t post it):

“A four wheel drive system for vehicles was patented 48 years before the development of Bantam’s BRC (Bantam Recon Car aka Mark I), the very first jeep (followed by 69 prototype BRC-60s aka Mark II), the precursor to the jeep and the decision behind the military to issue a call for prototype 1/4 vehicles (to which three companies responded:  Ford (Pygmy), Bantam (BRC-40) and Willys (Quad).   Porsche developed a four wheel drive electric car prototype in 1900,  2 Dutch brothers built a four wheel drive Spyker race car in 1904 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spyker).  The Four Wheel Drive Auto company of Wisconsin built 20,000 four-wheel drive trucks for the British and American Armies during World War I.”

Now, maybe Bantam invented the modern transfer case.  Of this, I’m less sure.  I haven’t found any evidence that certifies the inventor of the transfer case.

These are both pretty rough.  Neither runs.

” I have two Willys CJ2As. I was going to make one,but i don’t have the time or space.  The 47 has a hard top with doors, the glass is good in the top but not in the doors or windshield. It is all stock with a Koenig PTO winch.  The 48 is less together but it seems to all be there. It  has 33X12.50 15 mud tires with 70%or 80% tread. Both have titles.  Neither of them are running at this time. These are up for auction together.”

1945 CJ-2A Huntington Beach, Ca **Sold**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE:  Lee just bought this Jeep. Congrats!

This restoration looks beautiful, though if this is really a ’45, then I think it should have the column shifter.  It’s beautiful and I rather like the burnt (?) orange.  The one element I don’t like is the ‘all wheel drive’ plaque on both sides of the hood.  It’s also missing the rear soft-top bars holder on the driver side.

“The vehicle IS titled as a 1943 though the serial number on the vehicle matches the code for a 1945. The transmission is a 4 speed.”

1961_cj3b_readersHere’s a good looking CJ-3B that comes with a few new parts.  The starting bid is $2599.00.  This could be a navy jeep.

“Built in April of 1961. Engine was rebuilt several years ago and runs better than when new. Transmission and transfer case are in great shape and the 4×4 is fully functioning. The body goes like this: Windshield frame is rusty but I have a replacement that goes with the deal.  Hood is good, rightside fender is good, left side fender has some rust but I also have a nice replacement fender that goes with the deal. All the steering and suspension is good and road worthy….”

1947_cj2a_austinUPDATE: **SOLD** Was $800

I’m pretty sure this is parts jeep given the poor condition of the body.

“Old ranch jeep. Bought a year ago and never touched it. Rust in some areas, worst near the side steps by the driver and passenger seats. Other areas not so much rust. Glass in windshield intact. New fuel tank. Does not run and no title. All major components seem to be there. With a little work should run. Email for photos or questions. Thx – Ben”

1963_dj3a_surrey_houstonThere are a TON of great pictures of this Surrey.  I don’t think I’ve seen this Surrey listed previously, but I might have missed it;  it looks like no expense was spared in it’s restoration.

“Purchaced by Wayne Davis because his wife liked the way it looked, this Gala-Surrey was purchaced at a small Jeep dealer in Cleveland, Texas, a full restoration began with an unlimited budget. The car was brought back to its original color scheme of pink and white as no detail was overlooked. The end result revealed a car ready for any show.  Contact Jose at 281 497 1000 with questions about this Jeep”

1944 MB Port Angeles, Wa eBay

• CATEGORIES: MB • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

1944_mb_portangelesThere’s been a variety of updates to this MB, including the rear bumper, the later model windshield, the radiator, the wiring and more.  I’d have to agree with the seller that this might make a good platform for a restoration project based on the pics.

“This is a 1944 Military Jeep delivered June 12, 1944. The original zinc dash plaques match the frame serial. The engine serial is 3J50087. I do not know for sure if it the original engine for certain. It has been converted to 12volt. I started working o this Jeep in 2003. Since then I have installed, rebuilt, or replaced the following.—Engine gaskets, timing gears, mounts, radiator, belt, hoses, coil, plugs, distributor, carberurator, and air duct. Brakes, changed to 11″x2″ duo-servo shoes, hoses, steel lines and switched to dual reservoir master cylinder. Locating it in the stock location with a kit from ATV, retaining the stock pedals. Front axle, wheel bearings, seals and nuts, spindle bushings, steering bearings and felt seals, inner and outer axle seals….”
