Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. As for the jeep, it turns out to be a pretty stock M-38 that runs. It’s got some rough edges and needs some paint. It’s got the dual battery setup. It could use new seat covers and a new gas tank and a few other items. A professional mechanic has done some work on it and can provide more specific information.
Except for that bump in the hood, this looks like it was a good solid build. Non runner now.

(08/10/09) Here’s a very early CJ-3A with a serial number of # 12041
“1949 Willys Jeep-CJ 3A, 62,000 miles, PTO winch – tow bar – roll bar – warn locking hubs – half cab with doors, 4 cy Jeep engine – 6 volt system – This Jeep was purchased by my father in 1960 as a hunting vehicle. It has the original running gear with the exception of the engine which was changed several years ago. All gauges are functional. Diamond plating was added on lower sides of body and new steel panels to floor of cab. Seats have been re-done. It was originally white then painted blue then green. Although there are some small rust areas, it has been under cover all through his ownership as well as mine. Noel 360-521-4163 nsplawn@netzero.net”

(12/27/2008) Here’s what appears to be a completely restored CJ-3A + trailer. Not many specifics on what was rebuilt.

This looks like a good price. Nice turbine rim on the back to boot.

(08/21/09) It appears the suspension is customized as well.
“Stainless Steel Body (Body cost 6000.00) 350/350hp 4 bolt with 350 trans with extra clutches. Assembled with Advanced Adapters parts. Less than 1000 miles on engine and trans. Aluminum custom built radiator. Over 17,000.00 invested.”
This appears to be a package deal. It looks like this ’49 has a CJ-2A windshield.
