About eWillys
Welcome to eWillys.com, a website for vintage jeep enthusiasts. I update this website nearly every day with jeep deals, jeep history, interesting reader projects, jeep related info, and more.
These quick searches can help you find things on eBay. People list in the wrong categories all the time, so don't be surprised to see brochures in the parts area for example. This section used to be split into jeeps, parts and other categories, but recent changes to eBay will require this information to be recoded.
The links to posts below show jeeps grouped by models, condition, and other ways. Some of these jeeps are for sale and others have been sold. If you are unsure whether a vehicle is still for sale or not, email me at d [at] ewillys.com for more info.
Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. So, tread carefully when purchasing a "project". If you have any concerns about buying a vintage jeep, or run across a scam, feel free to contact me for help, comments or concerns .
“I have the transmission from a 1955 jeep willys Cj5. I have noidea whats wrong with it, but it seems to be intact. it is the 3 speed transmission and transfer case all in 1. if your interested just give me an offer. my numberis 720 254 7116. Chris.”
If nothing else, it’s a cheap was to get some e-brake parts.
“t90 transmission and dana 18 transfercase out of 1947 jeep willys cj2a. both have broken gears but the cases are good and there is a good stock input shaft and many more good parts. good e-brake cable too. reply via email”
“I pulled this complete from a rolled CJ2A but will fit a CJ2 CJ5 and others. Twin stick Spicer 18 transfer case with Spicer 18H chain drive PTO. T90 transmission, drive shafts for axles, parking brake. Big Foote Bros winch, not a little Ramsey ot Koenig winch and PTO drive shaft. The truck was running when rolled but I can’t confirm anything about condition. Being sold as a complete unit for $500 OBO 818-394-0028.”
“Heavy Duty 4 speed T-18 Borg Warner Transmission (along with Dana 20 transfer case and bellhousing) it has the very low 6.32 to 1 first gear ratio. strong tranny for offroad jeep or truck. it came off of 1977 Jeep Cherokee Chief SUV. MOVING MUST SELL, $450 OBO, (509) 768-6280”
“Selling a dana 18 tcase and warn overdrive from my willys. Everything is in great working order. The warn overdrive is 6 spline and shifts cleanly. The dana 18 transfer case has been twin sticked and has the 4″ bore. I can take hi resolution shots of anything you’d like to see in more detail. All three shifters will be included. 600$ obo. I need a few things that I would take in trade. A dana 20 tcase to mate to a 6 spline mainshaft, a metal chop saw, drill press or tubing bender (not pipe).”
Given that the TC was rebuilt, this might be a good value. However, there’s enough dirt on top of the TC that it must have been used for at least a little while.
“warn or saturn all range overdrive and a dana 18 tranfercase, this was rebuilt and all bolted to trans and engine but pop had a stroke and project days are done, ready to install and go willys.
A brand new adapter will run around $450 (here’s one for $479). I suspect these are hard to find used.
“call for a pic or e-mail. there are no cracks and no abuse. i also have a ford bronco frame set up for a willys wagon 4×4. there is a 351w a c6 tranny and a np 208 transfer case. 1200.00 for the whole frame.”
I spent some time earlier to day trying to track down what came before the Spicer 18 transfer case. Unfortunately, I can’t find anything such as a Spicer 12 or a Spicer 3 anywhere. If the Spicer 18 was the Dana Corp’s first try at a transfer case, then it’s entirely reasonable to say they hit a homer with it, as it stayed in the jeep (though ratios and other minor changes were made) from 1941 to 1971, when the jeep started using a center pumpkin and the Dana 20 transfer case.
So, here’s some interesting facts I learned during my searches.
The Spicer Corp’s success seems to be the result of the industry standardization around their products due to their high quality and competitive pricing.
In June of 1940 during a meeting between Bantam, government, Spicer and Timken representatives, Bantam and Spicer worked out the details of the drive train, for which Spicer received 130,000 for the tooling costs. (from the m38a1 site). The front end was also worked out during this meeting by an engineer from Spicer.
While the Willys used the passenger side drop transfer case (a spicer 18), the Ford Pygmy (Ford’s prototype jeep) and the Bantam BRC Mark I (the very first jeep prototype) and the BRC-60/Mark II (Bantam’s 2nd prototype) relied on a driver side drop transfer case from spicer that was also a Spicer 18. (Here’s more about it)
I could only find 4 spicer transfer cases. The Spicer 18, 20, 23 (for Chevrolet 4wd conversions) and 24 (for Ford 4wd conversions) (see Napco history). There’s likely more, I just didn’t find any info about them.
Charles Dana joined in 1913, injecting money into the company. In a couple years, Charles assumed the presidency.
In 1946, the company was officially renamed the Dana Corp, which by that time was a holding company for Spicer as well as Parish, Salisbury, Brown-Lipe and others. The idea was to continue using the brand Spicer for the drive train products due to the strong brand name. For some reason, that’s not clear to me, over time the Spicer brand name seemed to disappear in favor of the Dana name.
The price on this CJ-5 has dropped. There's been some good upgrades and the body appears to be in very good shape. I suspect the seller will drop the price even more to sell it.
