TABLE OF CONTENTS: There’s 4 sections to this post:
1. MY CAGE:
Here’s the cage in the jeep. Yeah, I’m happy about this. It’s a little chromier color than I wanted, but I suspect I’ll be covering it with wrap soon. I already hit my head once, lol …
And here’s a video:
2. MY THOUGHTS ON BUILDING THE CAGE
And an overview of my experience:
This post reflects my experience researching and building my roll cage. My goal with this post is to eliminate the need for others to spend the hours and hours I spent researching weighing options and deciding upon a cage. Note that while I have had a couple cages and my dad built two cages (back in the 70s), this was the first cage I designed, bent and built myself.

UPDATE: Was $2000. **SOLD**
It needs a new rear driveline. Otherwise, it looks to be a very good price.
“1949 Jeep willys, 350 4 bolt main 400 horse, B&M shifter, turbo 350 tranny, 8k lbs winch, new soft top, newer tires, Need cash, jeep I know its worth, my loss your gain, clean title from washington, Jeep runs and drives but does need new custom drive line made for rear”
This sounds like a great price.
“Have a newly rebuilt Chevy SM420 transmission. Bought it originally for my Willys wagon and never installed after going with a different drive train. This trans is one of the best for off roading due to its low 1st gear and is great in short wheelbase rigs since its only about a little over a foot long. This Trans also comes with an extra 420 that is not in great shape but its extra parts! I also have a Advanced Adapters SM420 to Dana 18 alum. adapter along with a twin stick Dana 18 T-case for sale as well. Asking $300 for the two trannys. If you have any questions just give me a call at 909 519 5787 Thanx!”
UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $1800
I thought I had listed one of these already, but I can’t seem to locate it.

Jay went to go look at this jeep and provided the following description. Thanks Jay!
The frame horns are a little screwed up in frontand has a rebuilt studabaker straight 6 in it instead of the ford motor.correct tranand transfer, runs good. The tub is the cleanest gpw tub ive seen except 1 hole that was cut in dash for a radio??. easily repairable. Very little rust except for a little by the axe/shovel location.Still has tool box lids, data plates on glove box, gas tand and sump, two original front seats. Frame number was “welded over” when motor mounts were changed for motor. Front crossmember was modified to drop radiator a little. I don’t think he is that negotiable.
Here’s a description from the sellers:
“Rebuilt 6 cyl. flathead engine. Rebuilt trans, Rebuilt transfer case. New brakes. New wheel bearings,New springs , has traction Bars.(for show) New Shocks. New steering linkage. Brand New tires. Custom Gas tank. Has been all rewired and new gauges. Heater. Painted light Metallic Blue.Top is from a CJ -5 made to fit. This has been in AUTO SHOWS in 1986,87,88,and 89. New Battery.. I am the third owner of this jeep. There is some rust by driver door where the shovel use to be mounted. 303-433-7928”
Pete, from the Willys-Overland Jeepster Club, emailed me a comment regarding Jeepsters the other day, teaching me something I didn’t know about Jeepsters (No Factory made 4wd models from ’48 – ’51). He had a link to his website, so I checked it out.
I finally figured out what Santa rides in when there is no snow for his sleigh … he uses a bright red Jeepster! Drop by JeepsterClub.com and learn more about their organization.
UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $1000.
