UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $8000.

There is some floor rust and the brakes don’t work, but it does have a nice patina and a unique overhead upholstery strategy.

“1955 Willys wagon 4×4 Super Hurricane 226 90k miles. Originally purchased by the San Francisco phone company. My friend’s father bought it from them in 1960. I have his original title in an envelope dated 1961. He drove it lightly around the Bay Area until the brakes went out in 1989. Last registered in 1988. If you do the math, he was getting up in years, so it has sat since then. He died at 100, I purchased it from my friend, his son, five years ago. here’s a list of some of the things I’ve dealt with:

“This is a WWII Jeep Trailer that was not used during the war and was sold after the war to SPEN CO. for civilian use. Hitch was converted to ball type at that time by the Spen Co. Rare trailer, very straight. Has a couple small cancer spots shown in pics in front wall. All the rest is surface rust. Has a Title. Just needs paint and the correct lights for a collectors trailer. Has the original (extremely hard to find) Spen hubcaps……”

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $900.

The back has been cut, but this seems in good shape otherwise. It has the data plate, too.

October 1952 Motor Trend Cover and Article

• CATEGORIES: Camping, Features, Magazine, Wood bodies • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

As I was packing, I pulled this issue of Motor Trend aside. When I leafed through it, I realized there was a jeep-related article I missed. So, here the “Unique Cars for Sportsmen” by Jim Earp. All the vehicles herein are interesting. The first page has a pic at the bottom of Vic Hickey’s famous jeep.

1942 Jeep Day in Mansfield, Ohio, Raises Big Bucks

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images, Old News Articles This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

The June 13, 1942, issue of the News-Journal out of Mansfield, Ohio, happily reported on the unexpected amount of bond sales at the city’s previous day’s “Jeep Day”. The committee had hoped to sell $10,000 worth of bonds, but topped $25,000 instead. I’m sure it was all due to the jeeps!

1953 Exploration of Manuelito Canyon, New Mexico

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images, Old News Articles This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Gallup’s local Willys dealer organized a trip to Manuelito Canyon, according to an article int he October 14, 1953, issues of the Albuquerque Journal. Some local Gallup area residents had hoped at the time that the canyon would become a national park. Instead, in 1964, it was named a National Historic District. There is (was?) a visitor’s center, but it is temporarily closed (and was so as of January of 2020, which predated the pandemic).

I like this photo with the line up of wagons. I’d love to find the original or reprint of this.

1953 M-38A1 USMC Elk Horn, IA **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: M-38A1 • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay.

Bill shared this M-38A1 for sale. The seller doesn’t note it, but the bumpers suggest this to be the USMC variant. This also has the Selector-Style Free-Lock branded hubs. It’s the first time I’ve seen that style of Selector branded Free-Lock (the others I’ve seen have been the more squat version and/or the more polished version).

“This is a 1953 M38A1 jeep that I did a full frame off restoration and engine rebuild. The horn does not work. Drives well. New canvas seats. Low miles on almost new tires. Clear Iowa Title.”
