CJ-V35U Research Archives

The CJ-V35/U is one of the rarest military Jeeps ever built by Willys. Ironically, it isn’t a mutated M-38, but rather a mutated CJ-3A, hence that likely explains the model derivation. They were built in 1950 for the Navy and Marines as radio trucks. Essentially, they were modified CJ-3As design to be capable of underwater travel (hence the U at the end of the name). They came with snorkels, extended exhaust pipes, unusual headlight bezels, and 6- or 12-volt generators to power radios; Only 1,000 were built (serial numbers are prefixed with CJ-V3 and numbered 10001 – 11000). The engine serial numbers are prefixed with the letter ‘V’ and start with number 10001.
The G503 forum has a very educational analysis of a CJ-V35/U that wasn’t perfectly
Visit the CJ-3A Page for a detailed article about the CJ-V35/U.

The pics are very tiny.

“1950 Willy’s Jeep. This Jeep, a CJV-35/U, is the prototype for the M-38 later produced from 1950- 1952 and used by the U.S. military in both Korea and Vietnam. 1950? CJV-35U? Fayetteville, NC **SOLD**

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $1500.

Walter spotted this jeep.  Seeing the pintle hitch on the back and the hooks on the left got me wondering what this was.  Then it has small cutout on the hood.  Finally, I spotted the CJV-35U-like bezels.  This is worth checking out.

“Project Willis Jeep, motor and drive train components are all there. Body is in really good shape. Floor pans and frame have no salt water or up north rust.”

What we have here is a frankenjeep.  This has a DJ-3A body with tailgate, a CJ-2A windshield, a drivetrain with what appears to be a rear PTO, and what appears to be some CJV-35U Bezels.

1950 CJV-35U Bozeman, Mt **SOLD**

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay.

The seller notes that there is also a hard top the winner can purchase for an additional $200.

“This is a dry Montana vehicle that was clearly kept out of the weather for most of its life, and the body is in remarkably good shape (we don’t salt our roads in Montana, so rust is not an issue as it is many other places). Many of the parts that make the CJV-35 unique are still on the Jeep, including dash plates, rear lift rings, front hooks,  hood snorkel cutout, headlight rings, and the specially-notched gas tank. The jeep appears to have had one repaint in a civilian green, and US government markings can be seen poking out from below (see photos). It looks like it was in use as an US Interior Department vehicle after its time in the Marines, but no other history is known. The motor has been replaced with a good-runing 1960’s era Buick (?) V6, but the rest of the driveline appears stock. The jeep runs and drives well, has good civilian tire on it, and good seats (are these even original, perhaps in black vinyl for the underwater driving?). Brakes, steering, suspension, tranny, 4 wheel drive all work well.

Any interested parties are encouraged to look at the jeep in person and drive it. All questions via email will be answered promptly. We have attempted to take as many high-res photos as possible so that the condition of the jeep can be assessed. This is sold “AS-IS” and “WHERE-IS”, and absolutely no warantees are made concerning the vehicle or its condition, either expressed or implied.

Again: restoring a military jeep is a wonderful but time and money-consuming task. If you’re going to make the investment, WHY NOT RESTORE THE BEST AND RAREST? One thing’s for sure – you will be the only one in your club with a CJV-35. Thanks for bidding and good luck!”

1951 CJV-35/U Moses Lake, Wa **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3A • TAGS: , , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE:  Eagle Eyed Bob recognized this as a CJV-35/U rather than a CJ-3A.  **SOLD**

This is supposed to have no rust.

“I had this listed as a 1951 cj 3a. A guy from New York called me and informed me of what I really have. It’s a 1950 Willys CJV-35, and it is for sale. Since it is so rare, I have increased the price to $5500. There were only 1000 of these made in 1950. Check it out on the internet. I am not kidding All original. Flat head 4 cyl, 3 speed tranny, 2 speed transfer case. At one time this vehicle was green. Then some one painted it an ugly salmon color. I have removed a bit of the paint (a mistake), and in places it comes off easily. In other places it is on there pretty good. It runs great and has no rust, no kidding. The tool box under the pasenger seat is solid, as are the floor boards and the floor under the rubber mat in the back. It comes with a roll bar and high back bucket seats and a tow bar. I took these three items off the vehicle, for they are not stock equipment. It has a heater that works. Unfortunately, someone put an AM radio in the dash ( a really dumb move in my opinion), but they did an ok job of it and it works. ‘.”

Also, it is still 6 volt, and it has the plates on the dash from the Willys Overland Corporation. They’re pretty cool. Come check it out.

It runs and drives, but definitely needs work. http://www.cj3a.info/sibling/cjv35u/photos/picsv35.html

“For sale is a 1950 Willys Military Jeep. It is a CJV35/U which is a specialty jeep made for under water use for radio equipment. It is known as the rarest military jeep in the world with just 1000 manufactured. Only about 50 are still in existence. This is a project jeep for sure. It runs and drives but is in rough condition. Again this is a project jeep for a military jeep enthusiast. It has all of the original drive train including the Flathead 4 cylinder engine. I have not started the jeep in a year but I can get it started. To learn more about these jeeps please visit this link where you will also see this jeep. Thank you for looking. 713-882-1012”
