Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. This may be a very late 1948 with the CJ-3A-like transmission crossmember under-frame mounting. Haven’t I listed this once already? The top with the odd rear window seems familiar.

This has what appears to be a very early version of the Worman Jee-Cab with the dual sliding windows and large rivets(?) around the windows. I’ve included 1948 factory photos from that top at the bottom.

“Mostly original – 4cyl hurricane engine, 3 spd transmission, front lock/unlock hubs, 6V. Vintage hard top with glass in-tact. Matching spare wheel. Engine bay reasonably clean, engine and drive train needs solid cleaning. Gauges mostly not working, 6 volt, wiring has had a few things added but it is mostly original. Floor boards rough. Tires hold air but are not road-worthy. 26xxx on the ODO but it isn’t working. Needs fuel line cleaning and new gas tank (or have it refurbed). Originally forest green. Bring a trailer or get ready to tow it (2” tow kit installed and goes with vehicle).
UPDATE: This post has been merged and reworked after I figured out that the two tops were actually related.
In July of 1963, Fresno-based Automotive Fiberglass Company placed an advertisement in Four Wheeler magazine for its new fiberglass hardtop. I wonder if the builder of this top was also a member of the Fresno Jeep Club?

This Automotive Fiberglass top appeared on a CJ-5 for sale in Fresno in 2010. It is the only jeep I’ve seen with an Automotive Fiberglass Top:

TIMELINE —
July 1963: Automotive Fiberglass places ad in Four Wheeler Magazine;
November 1963: Top King Manufacturing files design patent for an altered version of the Automotive Fiberglass top;
February 1964: Top King top is advertised in the Four Wheeler Magazine;
September 1964: A more detailed ad is placed in Four Wheeler Magazine.
A few months after the Automotive Fiberglass advertisement, two design patents were filed and assigned to Top King Manufacturing. You’ll note that the rear side-angle has been reversed. The mid-section insert piece for the side was also changed, altered from a triangle shape to a rhombus shape. Here’s the design patent information from the Official Gazette of the United States Patent Office:

By February 1964, King Top was advertising the newly redesigned top in Four Wheeler Magazine. Curiously, the company listed its name as the Top King Fiberglass Company rather than Top King Manufacturing (could be a relic from the Automotive Fiberglass company days):

Seven months later, this second ad was placed in the September 1964 issue of Four Wheeler Magazine. The company had corrected its name for the ad back to Top King Manufacturing. Additionally, Top King announced it would soon have flatfender versions of the top available, along with a half cab version. Have any of these survived?

Nice looking CJ-6 with a Koenig hardtop.
“Jeep 1966 CJ-6 V6. One owner 59,558 original documented miles. Purchased new in Boulder Colorado and lived a pampered life in Boulder. The owner ordered it very well loaded including the Dauntless Oddfire Buick V6, 2 barrel carburetor, 3 speed standered transmission, Warren Overdrive, Warren lockout hubs, full metal hardtop (removable) with hard doors (removable) with roll up windows, headliner, and back lift gate, electric wipers, heater, AM radio, flashers, roll bar, tow hitch. Plus owner added tow bar, fog light, backup light, trailer wires.
Repainted the original color in the 1980s and not driven much after that.. Stored inside a climent controlled garage until last year. It has recently received new battery, the fuel tank cleaned, 2 barrel carburetor rebuilt, new fuel pump, fuel lines replaced, fuel filter replaced. Water pump replaced and system flushed. Oil and filter changed. New BF Goodrich tires and new wheels.
Runs like new!
Drives like new!!
Looks great!!!

Comes with original wheels, old water pump, all paperwork from owner.

“Have a 1948 Willys / Jeep old school original. This is where it all started for the awesome jeep wrangler’s we have today! Just think in 28 years this Willy’s / jeep will be a hundred years old and a pretty cool piece of history. Ready for restoration. This would make a great COVID-19 project keep yourself at home and restore this to its former Military glory! Have clean title for it! Sorry but Im not super knowledgeable on these but looks like a lot of it is there to restore. I have seen some online with no title or they are pretty chopped up or incomplete. Fully restored these things bring quite a bit of money. Makes a nice project because they are not very big so if you don’t have a lot of room or maybe your thinking of getting into restoring old vehicles.”
