Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. UPDATE: Jim notes that this CJ-5 is a very rare example of a 462 model CJ-5. You can see his comment about it below. I tried to find some pictures online of a closeup of the decal, but couldn’t find any.
Also, here’s a picture of Johnny Cash from a 1975 Christmas Album. It looks like it could be the same jeep.

UPDATE: This has been relished on eBay.
Though it appears stuck in thick Tacoma area mud, there is an explicit declaration on the back of the photo stating that the jeep is NOT stuck.
“Up for sale is a 1958 Original B&W Glossy 7×5 Photograph taken by an Army Photographer and showing what I believe is a US Army Willys M38A1 (MD) Jeep in a Very Muddy Road with Id’d Soldier, most likely at Fort Lewis or Yakima Training Center in Washington State. Back is hand titled: Lloyd McClelland + jeep in mud. Not stuck. Taken while on hill duty. Year is based on some dated images in this collection. Any serious defects will be noted here [curved ends, light roughness to lower edge, old tape, minor tape? staining on back], but since condition is subjective, please enlarge photos & decide overall condition for yourself. This would make a wonderful addition to your collection.
ALL the images I have by this unknown US Army Photographer were taken in Washington State in 1958. However some of his military views do not give location info, so location is a best guess from what is shown. I also have several other Army / Air Force photos from this photographer on eBay.”
Unfortunately, the seller didn’t provide any of the pictures of the 3 page jeep pictorial spread from this magazine. The seller explains what the SALT Magazine was.

This is the first Parkette body I’ve seen unattached in 4 1/2 years of looking. The price is great. If I only had the space ….

then I would recommend patching every hole and then start from there.

1949 CJ3A Willys Jeep. The engine, transmission and transfer case were rebuilt. Many worn out and missing parts were replaced. The electrical system has been converted to 12 volt. But the original 6 volt starter is still used. Original gages in working order, Improvements and additions, Turn signals, seat belts, emergency brake cable,foot steps for drivers and passengers side. Rebuilt 2-speed harrison heater. Rebuilt windshield, new weather stripping, new cowl weather strip. new rear seat, new welting,Rebuilt steering wheel. New taillights, New rear tire carrier. Hesston Red. Fabricated frame for the top, A new fuel pump was installed spring of 2012. Vehicle has original brakes which still work but an upgrade is needed. Engine runs great. Titled and Licensed. A number of misc. parts also included.
The Engine: – L-head 134 Inline 4 cylinder / Transmission:/ T-90 3 Speed manual. Transfer Case:/ Dana 18 2-speed. Axles – Dana 41, Dana 25 front. Vehicle has been garaged.”

This looks solid, however the floors are fiberglass.
“I have a 1948 CJ2A tub in pretty good condition. It was restored about 8 years ago but now has a few minor issues that need a little bit of work. The floors are all fiberglass so you could cut that out and replace the floor pans. Other that that it’s a really good start! It even has the original AX brackets still on the tub!

The frame is in excellent shape . . .
“i have for sale a 1948 jeep cj2a, when the jeep was purchased it did hot have any body, since then pieced one together, the welding is almost complete, needed the rear floor pan completed, the rear rocker and the original dash re installed. the engine was running in the fall haven’t tried starting it but have turned it over, befor i had it the jeep was being used to plow with during the winter, that being said the frame is in excellent shape, had pressure washed the whole thing. to inspect it.
All the id tags are matching.
have other various parts for it.
comes with a factory plow set up that works.”
