Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. UPDATE: The seller has dropped the price to $2000 and is throwing in a beat up 1952 M-38. I’d say this is a good price.
(12/27/09) The seller notes that this would not make a good original restoration projection.
“I have a 1952 M38 for sale along with a 1955 M170. The M38 is still 24 volt and would make a great restoration project, it does not run. The M170 has been converted to 12 volt and has aftermarket seat frames, it would also make a great project. The M170 was a military ambulance when it was in service. Both are classic vehicles and would be great for trail jeeps or collectibles. I priced them together and cheap because i need to get rid of both of them. (07/13/09) I wonder how bad the inside rust really is.
“Up for sale is one of the rarest jeeps ever produced. It is a millitary M170 field ambulance. It has been converted to 12 volts. It does have rust in the bed and passenger floor. It would make a great restoration project or hunting vehicle. It runs and drives. The 4wd also works. The frame and drive train are in good condition. The driverside windsheild also has a crack in it. I do not have a title will be sold with a bill of sale.”

This is one of the nicest M-170s I’ve seen. It’s not museum perfect, but that adds some nice character.
“This Jeep is in great condition, it will still start right up every time and runs excellently. This has been very well taken care of and is quite rare. My grandfather served as a Lt. Colonel in WWII and beyond. He purchsed this Jeep from the Army after his retirement and restored it for me. It is a mechanical masterpiece, they don’t make them like this anymore. Nothing gives me more pleasure than cranking up this piece of authentic United States military history and driving back in time. This vehicle is really great and I hate to part with it. I am willing to let it go for less than it is valued because of financial circumstances….”

“Highly collectible willys jeep. Production started in 1954 :500 units of this particular jeep were made that year. During the life span of 1954 – 1964 only 6,500 units were produced. This could be the top 50 left for that year in such good condition body wise. Has original parts, even the tires!!! Items needing to be fixed:
Engine is Honeyed and will need a clean-out. Brakes will also need to be placed on the jeep. Will need seats.
We haven’t had time to restore the Jeep and would like for someone else to take over the project. “

“m 170 (m-170) ran two years ago sitting for the past two years, 90% complete with military I.D plate. put into service 4/1954 for marine use as a light troop 6 man infantry vehicle. there was only 6500 of these made.”

These are rare enough that this is a fantastic price even if the brakes need a little work.
