(05/23/2010) This M-38A1 looks to be in great shape.
“You can own the best military jeep Willy’s made with the better springs, rear end and improved seals. This jeep is in very good condition and it is very collectable and hard to find! It has the original engine with 24200 miles on it. The engine was rebuilt at 19058 miles. It has a 12-volt system with elec/vacume wipers, army data plates and black-out switches. Recent brake and carburator work, it has a Best Top and bikini top, rollbar and tow bar. I have all the repair receipts since 1989. Call 899-7013 or 592-4899”
I located a couple good pics of MOMA’s 1952 M-38A1 which was donated by the DaimlerChrysler Corporation Fund. I would suggest calling ahead to make sure this is still on display if you want to see it. However, the M-38A1 is not the first jeep to be highlighted by MOMA. In September of 1951, the Museum of Modern Art in New York decided to exhibit iconic automobile design as pure elements of art & design. One of the eight vehicles chosen was the M-38, with the description as a “sharply rational vehicle”. You can read more about that at the Jalopy Journal.
This pic is from a snapper of of NYC images for the NYCPIX blog. There are some good, everyday sort of pics. If you’ve spent time in NY, you’ll enjoy this site.
This photo is also from a NYC image blog.
It doesn’t look too bad for the price.
“4-cyl. F-Head Hurricane engine. Engine stuck, possibly a valve. Divided windshield, curved front fenders, floor pan rusted, “black-out” lights, 2 front seats only, pinacle hitch, some rust in windshield frame, no title. Great for restoration. Call 434-309-1495 or 434-665-6393.”
The seller calls this the military version of the CJ-3B …. naw, I don’t think so.
“This is the military version of the jeep cj-3b. body is in ok shape and it doesnt run but will with a little work. has a pto working 4wd and low/high range.”

“1952 MJ38A1 Jeep w/1981 Buick V-6 Motor; Runs Good; Comes w/extras(hi lift,seats,tow bar etc.); call w/?s; $1800 or b/o; (916)996-9927.”
Here’s an old fire jeep. It turns over and run, but there’s a mechanical problem of some kind.
“Mfg. Serial Number 21583. Date of Delivery 9/52. I bought two of these Jeeps in a package deal. I only want one of them, so I am selling this one. This Jeep would make a nice Jeep to restore. The body has a few bad places on it but all or easily repairable. There is very little rust on this Jeep, you can tell from the photos that the floorboards and toolbox is rust free. This jeep was used as a Fire Truck Brush Jeep and had at one time had a small tank in the rear floorboard. A couple of holes were placed in the floorboard for hoses leaving the tanks but I think they could easily be patched. The engine does turn over but there must be a problem in the drive train because it pulls hard when in gear. In any case it would make a nice Jeep to do a ground up restoration on. There isn’t a title for this Jeep but I will include with a Bill of Sale. Sold as is where is with no warranties expressed or implied. Selling it as a parts vehicle to be restored.”
This sold quicky … thought I’d post it anyway. It sure looked like a good price.
