1958 CJ-5 Southwest VA **Status Unknown**

• CATEGORIES: CJ5 • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **Status Unknown** Was $2000.

“Here is a good Jeep project. Engine will run, not seized. Hate to see it sit here. Has everything it needs to be put back together to run except a battery. Mostly all original. Some newer parts include; fuel line, fuel pump, and ignition. Has M38A1 radiator and hood. Custom made tow hitch. The floors are completely shot in front but still has original floor in the rear. Even has original spare tire support baffle. in the rear fender well.

I made my own spare tire carrier. The dashboard is not cut up. Rare aluminum Sears Deluxe Arctic Hardtop with original glass. No glass for the doors. The top is full of dents, but still serves its purpose. Comes with standard low back seats. Previous owner put Toyota lap seat belts in it. I also will include original Willys front fenders and new aftermarket fenders. And old ford rims and tires if you want period correct look, just have to put inner tube in one tire. Also can include a kaiser era tailgate. Selling as whole, cash only, no trades. $2500 obo willing to negotiate on price”

This has a 2×4 as a front crossmember? I think we’ve seen this before; that rear seat looks familiar.

1952-m38-chambana-il

“I have an awesome 1952 military issued M38 Jeep. It has a ton of character and charm for any jeep lover or antique car lover. This Jeep runs too!

Details: this jeep is a mostly original M38 (Korean era) military vehicle. There are some aftermarket type of parts on it, but the majority is stock 1952. It’s a 3-speed manual with 4-wheel drive and a PTO. Also, it has the “Arctic” upgrade (the original arctic hardtop and hard doors). It has the original placards on the dash that match title too (which is pretty uncommon from my understanding). It has been updated to a 12-volt system too. I’ve got a copy of the original military issued Technical Order (manual) that goes with it.

Although this jeep runs, my original goal was to do a 75% restore, but life happens and I know longer have the time or desire to complete the job. I have removed the seats, the gas tank, the arctic top and the majority of bolts holding the front-floor pan to the frame (my plan was to only replace the front portion of the floor pan). All the bolts/etc. can go with (I kept to match sizes at a later date). Therefore, my inability to complete it can be your opportunity to see it through! This is a very unique and uncommon jeep.

Motor: the motor is believed to be a F-134 Hurricane (which replaced the “Go Devil”). Although I have confirmed some of the identifying numbers on the block, I am unable to confirm other identification numbers on the engine (due to age), but it is no doubt of the right era. I have no idea if the odometer is accurate regarding mileage.

I have clean title in hand. It was a barn find in Northern Minnesota (from what I was told) and it came from Minot AFB in North Dakota in the late 50’s or early 60’s. I was informed that I am the third titled owner subsequent to the US Military. Parts of the jeep are still the original olive green drab, but it has been repainted 3 times since (blue, then orange then back to the olive green drab).

I was asking $5,000.00 for this jeep, but will accept $4,500. I’m willing to entertain any reasonable offer, but no low balls at all. Only serious inquires please. No trades, and I do NOT need help selling this vehicle.”

1949 Color Video of Exploring Southern Utah

This CJ-2A has the spare tire on the side and sports a Beck “ECONO” Model F3B-100 hardtop.

1949-ray-virginia-garner-southern-utah2

The CJ-2A has the same hardtop, but for some reason it no longer has a side mount tire.

Frazier spotted a wonderful color video from 1949. Credit for the one-hour length film goes to Ray and Virginia Garner. As I watched it the first time I was struck by the quality of the cuts, the closeups and faraway shots, and the overall sense of a narrative, despite the lack of sound. A little research proved that this wasn’t Ray’s first video. He’s got a long resume that stretched back to pre-WWII. He and his wife Virginia continued filming for years, traveling around the world, and made films for NBC and ABC News.

LINK FOR VIDEO==> Check out the one hour video that starts near Moab and ends within Canyonlands National Park. The jeep section begins at the 15:30 mark and lasts the rest of the film. You’ll eventually realize that there are two green CJ-2As, though I didn’t see a scene that ever showed both together. If you know southern Utah at all you will really appreciate this gem.

Here’s the archived description:
Movie (color, no sound, 57 minutes, 33 seconds): a home movie by Ray Garner shows various scenes in the deserts of the American Southwest. Ray and Virginia Garner take a road trip in a wood-frame station wagon, camping in the desert of Utah and Arizona. Scenes include Arches National Monument, sand dunes, the La Sal Mountains from Arches, cactus and other vegetation, Monument Valley, wildlife (caterpillar, lizard, insects, scorpion, “Hassayampa legend” sign; car travel in the desert; camping; a windmill pumping water; men climb El Capitan (Agathla Peak) in northern Arizona; the couple in a motorboat on the Colorado River. jeep ride at Dugout Ranch and Canyonlands, San Juan County; petroglyphs at Newspaper Rock; dynamiting a boulder to clear a path for the Jeep; Chesler Park and the Needles area; Indian ruins (Beef Basin?); small planes land and take off at Chesler Park; installing climbing ropes on rocks in Canyonlands to access Indian ruins; Wedding Ring Arch in Salt Creek Canyon; Indian ruins and petroglyph (“All-American Man”) in Salt Creek area. Final sequence shows more natural arches.
