“Up for sale is a M38 Willys military Jeep. It is a good restoration prospect! It has not run in 10+ years and will need engine, transmission, and other drive train work to get it back on the road.
A lot of the critical parts you will need are still on the Jeep. The body and fenders are very straight. Hood includes the snorkel hole plate. Only known filler is the passenger side rear corner. It will need a new floor to restore. It has all of the major electrical parts (starter, regulator, and generator). Other parts present include floor plates, correct seat frames, new glass and gasket 5 years ago, proper original and correct M38 oil bath air cleaner, crossover pipe, front shackle brackets, etc. It has 4 of the original and correct wheels. Very old tires (including Mohawk Chief and U.S. Royal) need to be replaced, although current tires do hold air.
The vehicle has no title. Dash board data plate is missing. Original MC-????? Original data plate on the passenger side wheel well shows MC-xxxx7. Can make out the MC, but not all of the numbers. These were built from 1949-1952. Guessing it is a 1952.
Included in the sale is another M38 engine and transmission (last 3 pictures). Treat as a core.
Let me know should you need to see any additional photos.

The $2500 price is FIRM…..do not ask!
Local pickup in Freeport, TX. It will need to be trailered.
Payment is cash upon pick up.
No title..”

The Ripple Effect …

• CATEGORIES: Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

The month of July was going to be work-on-jeep month. Instead, after Ann launched her painting of the guest house, it became work-on-the guest-house-exterior month. Oh well, such is life.

One project on the house, led to another, rippling farther and farther …. First, I jumped into painting the exterior so that could get finished (Ann had to halt painting, as she began to have migraines and auras). But, that led to pulling up the deck to replace the plywood decking, which led to the realization that the whole deck needed rebuilding, which led to the opportunity to regrade around the east and north side of the place, which led to adding a French drain for the deck’s gutter.

Though redoing all this had been the plan, I hadn’t planned on doing this right now. My hope is to finish up the deck today, as we have 110 degree+ temps arriving in a couple days for a few days.

This pic shows the deck frame on temporary supports as I get everything squared up.

1953? CJ-3B? (or a Mitsubishi) Galt, CA $4000

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3B This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: Regarding the serial number plates, my guess is that they are not original to the jeep.

Also, Derek Redmond provided his thoughts on this jeep: “The 3B you sent is unusual indeed. You didn’t mention whether you noticed the serial number plate is from a 1953 stripped chassis 3B.  But there’s nothing that really ties that to the Jeep itself.  You’re correct about it being a Mitsu, although an earlier model than the one you found on my site.  The drawing athttps://cj3b.info/World/JapanJ4.html is pretty much identical – it would be an early 1953 CJ3B-J4.

I guess it could be just a Mitsu body dropped on the stripped chassis. I don’t know enough about Mitsu mechanical parts to tell if there are any clues in the photos.

The little bracket welded to the grille is definitely for a Japanese unit badge. The one on the driver’s side of the dash could also be for some military thing like a rifle holder, although I don’t recall seeing one before.

The fuel filler, hood cutout, glovebox, bumperettes, blackout marker lights, lack of tailgate and the windshield all say Mitsu military. The windshields almost always had a vent in the center, but some of the very earliest did not, probably when the stampings were still coming from the US.

I have seen some Mitsu under hood photos that look like they possibly show those brackets on the fender, but it’s hard to tell.  Same with the drawing.”

=======================

This unusual “CJ-3B” has a number of odd elements. Given the passenger indents, I thought this might have a replacement body. However, the lack of a tailgate, the unusual passenger fender, the grille with a metal piece welded between the tines, and the split windshield suggested to me that this might be something else.
