Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. Here’s some before, during and after shots of my CJ-3A windshield rebuild. Special thanks to John for the vent bracket. Mine broke off and John created a new one for me. It works beautifully. I was able to de-paint and can reuse the windshield gasket, so now all I need is the glass and the cowl rubber and it’s completed. Necessary repairs included welding up 8 holes and welding the crack in the frame. Next, finishing the brakes.

“1949 Wyllis Jeep CJ3A, flat head 4cyl…this jeep runs and drives just needs some tlc. 2500.00( have been told it is worth more). ”

“… Ok, it is its original red. It has a full cage. It has a 350 Chevy V8 swapped in with a 400 Turbo Automatic. The transfer case is 1 speed and the jeep is FT 4×4. It has “Emergency Drive” which locks the transfer case and makes it drive like a standard 4×4 instead of the FT style. It appears to have about a 3″ lift on it and is sitting on a damn-near brand new set of 31×12.50 R15 BFG Muds (the old style). For my rockcrawling needs, this guy is too big of a project to get it where I want it. For someone who loves Willys or wants a Jeep to make nice… this is a great platform to start. I’d like to get $3000 for it or do some trading….”

This has a bed extender.
“This is a project vehicle I’m not able to finish. Civilian model, All parts included; Pickup bed, trailor hitch, 1/2 metal cab w/ doors, all glass. Asking $3,500 please call with any questions.”

It’s not the prettiest thing.
“Willys Jeep Model CJ-2A (Make Year 1948) 4X4 with 4-cylinder Jeep engine and covered top with doors. Runs good, has new battery, good tires, and gun rack. Excellent condition considering the age.”
This doesn’t appear to be an M-38-like body, as I don’t see cutouts on the driver’s side. This is unusual.
“I have a 1948 willys (vw powered) aka veep. I am looking to trade it for a 71′ or earlier vw bus, bug, or ghia. the veep has vw bug suspension good working brakes and good tranny. it does not have a motor in it at this time it takes a standard vw aircooled bug engine. It had a motor in it through the fall and winter i just took it out last month. thats how i know the about the tranny and brakes and all the electrical good too, also has a good top no tears. the seats need some upholstery work which i could fix if we make a deal. so if you got something you want to trade contact me. I have a clear title in hand”
UPDATE: Status unknown. The price had dropped to $2500. The seller included an overdrive with the cj3b.
The license plates suggest this jeep is from Colorado, though I don’t have any record of this being for sale recently. It looks pretty solid.

It appears this is either a M-38 body or a replacement body. For $300 it looks like it has a variety of parts, including an almost full cage.

“1948 willys jeep like new rubber runs and drivers good. Jeep has P.T.O. and soft top plow not included but could be if you want it. I have another set of rubber I could put on the jeep for 400.00 less”
As mentioned yesterday, here’s a quick look at the 1943 GPW Darryl rebuilt. He did some beautiful work (both in building and documenting the build). He also built a trailer (pics below as well). He lists his objective below:
“To create for my personal use and enjoyment, a fully-functional, factory new appearing and extremely accurate “representative” WWII jeep using a new reproduction tub on an original, all “F-script” Ford wartime-production drivetrain, while containing costs and allowing minor deviations (a Solex carburetor) from the original configuration for ease of maintenance, reliability and safety and to be driving it within 12 months of starting the project.”
