Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. For $1600, this looks like it might be a pretty good deal.

I include this jeep as it’s a rare example, in my opinion, of a DJ-3A with a tailgate. I’ve heard these existed, but hadn’t had picture proof until I saw this one. The thing that clued me in was the large speedometer. Once I saw that, I went back and read the description.
“For Sale is my 1955-1964 DJ3A/CJ2A/CJ3A combo Jeep that I use on my Farm for general weekly transportation over the last several years. Jeep is stored inside my barn at all times on my farm. If you are looking for a show vehicle with matching numbers this is not the ride for you. However, if you are looking for a good solid original Willys flat fender Jeep driver for general use, read on. All body parts except the tool box are original Willys manufacture. Body tub, fenders, hood, tailgate, and front grill are original DJ3A that have had a paint job using Mil Standard Sherwin Williams OD CARC paint. Body tub is solid as the DJ3A had a full hard top which protected it from the normal weather related rust experienced by most soft top Willys vehicles…..”
Here’s a running flatfender that appears in good shape. The engine doesn’t look like much. Good looking roll cage, though I prefer bars on the outer edges between the loops rather than just in the center. If you have ever been jeeping in a tight spot and had the roll cage bar bump along a tree, you’ll know what I mean. It’s too easy to catch a tree inbetween the two loops.

UPDATE: This nice CJ-2A is still for sale. There’s lots of updates to this jeep, including, I think, reversed front shackles.

“1948 willys pickup Flat front Homemade bed(solid and good shape) All original 6 volt system. Good dash, all gauges intact. interior all there, bucket seats. Frame pretty good. Have a finished, primered front clip to go with it. Hood, fenders, grille professionally blasted, repaired and primered. Foot starter, had engine running Springs really good, look new.Been on a farm last 30 years. Looking at buying a wagon and need to sell $1500.00 with front clip. Good one for restore 814-590-7732 Also have 43 MB(with aluminim hard top) for sale and possibly sell 49 CJ 2-A with half cab. Solid body with great half cab. Good heater. “This is a very nice CJ-2A California jeep that is redone as a WWII Medic’s vehicle. This was my Dad’s Jeep which he purchased in California (where he lived) in the 60’s. I brought it to Pennsylvania last year and put a new exhaust, brake system and water pump on it along with a tune up and head gasket. New canvass summer top and front seat cushions. Has always been garaged here in PA. Runs, drives and stops like new. Has new radial tires and Overdrive which really makes driving it a joy.”

It looks like this jeep has had some interesting upgrades. I’ve seen a few other jeeps with the Ford 9 inch rear, but am not clear what the advantages of that are.

“1945 Willys Jeep- It has a 4 cylinder engine which turns over, but it has an electrical problem somewhere so it is not starting. It has a rebuilt starter. It also has a tow bar, a roll bar, and dualmatic locking hubs. Needs brake job. I have the pink slip and it’s registered as a non-op. We have too many projects and need to sell this one.”
This may be a pretty good deal if the bodies are in reasonable shape.
“1947 Willy’s and 1948 Willy’s. Both are complete the 47 has been inside for over 15 years and the 48 has been inside for over 12 years. Both should run with some tender loving care. The 47 has not been started or ran in over 2 years. The 48 has not ran since purchased over 12 years ago. Previous owner used it frequently and I purchased it for a project. Have aluminum hard top and soft top, too. Buy the whole works for $2500.00 You won’t be disappointed.
