“This retired mail jeep still runs great. It has a small tranny leak, and some minor body work, but is a blast to drive! Like most postal vehicles, it has the steering column on the right side, and is a one seater. There is plenty of room to add more seating, or haul things.”
I found this interesting article from the St. Petersburg Times in 1994. Island Cruisers was a Clearwater, Florida, company that refurbished old right-hand drive postal jeeps for export to island countries where people drive on the right hand side.
Jan and Robin Stach started the company. By the time this article was written, the company had sold 35 jeeps to the Bahamas, Grenada, Aruba, the Cayman Islands and Cancun. They were generally used for rentals. The company had another 30 jeeps in process. The Stachs feel that demand was huge and they hoped to mature into a company capable of producing 500 jeeps a month.
Unfortunately, I didn’t find any additional information on how successful (or not) or for how long the company operated.
Note: Another company started about the same time on the west coast called Safari-Kars

It will start on the second try, and drive fine. It’s body is in good condition. There is a little rust. Remember this was a work car. The tages are still good. There is radio/cd player.”

“1978 DJ5 mail Jeep for sale. This is two wheel drive but has a posi rear so it’s great off road. Many upgrades including heavy duty military leaf springs which lifted it a couple inches, 16″ tires and rims instead of the stock 15″, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, & starter. Repainted in military flat tan last year. New mirrors, LED turn signal & brake lights. 6cyl AMC engine. True mileage unknown. Everything works but the transmission is slipping and I have way too many other projects to find time to work on this. Clean NV title.”
Looks solid. It’s a left hand drive model.
