May 1948 Outdoor Life – Bountiful Jeep Posse

Here’s another story with images about the Bountiful Jeep Posse. This appeared in the May 1948 issue of Outdoor Life. Interestingly, this article summarizes the environmental history and purpose behind the creation of the Bountiful Jeep Posse.

Clark County Jeep Posse in Kojak Episode

• CATEGORIES: Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This image capture shows the only flat fender that I saw while fast forwarding through the episode. Naturally, some folks blocked a clear view of it.

On March 11, 1978, an episode of Kojak aired that featured the Clark County Jeep Posse. No doubt some of you are wondering who Kojak is, but for those old enough to remember the detective series, this was the second to the last episode of the series (episode 21 of the 22 shows that year), as that show was cancelled in 1978. The show feels pretty dated in a variety of ways.

LIonel Hall, a son to one of the Jeep Posse members that appears in the episode, alerted me to the presence of the group in the show. By 1978, there weren’t a lot of jeeps left in the Posse, and only one vintage flat fender that I could spot, but it’s still pretty neat to see the jeeps appear in the episode.

The episode can be viewed, with commercial breaks, at Daily Motion, which for some reason has the show reversed (all the text is backwards and the drivers are all on the right side of the vehicles). the name of the episode is 60 Miles to Hell:

1954 Nevada CAP Jeep Squadrons Article

The May 30, 1954, issue of the Nevada State Journal reported on the practice maneuvers of a squadron of jeepers unique to Nevada that worked with the local Civil Air Patrols on rescues. Nevada had two different squadrons, one in Washoe County and the other in Churchill County.

As you can see, the squadrons accepted a wide rand of jeeps. One is a slat grille MB, while others are CJs and wagons.

1949 Article on the Bountiful Jeep Posse

• CATEGORIES: Features, Magazine • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

I took a chance on eBay and bought a 1949 issue of the Goodyear’s Magazine for Men off of ebay that mentioned, in the ebay ad, about having an article on a Jeep Posse. The magazine turned out to be a sort-of marketing piece by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company focused on men and with several interesting articles. Below you’ll find two articles from the magazine and a quiz.

The first article is a pretty early article on Utah’s Bountiful Jeep Posse. The other article covers a man named John Fordon and his business in New York City called “Beck ‘n Call”. Finally, the Fordon article includes a quiz on streets from around the country, names as relevant to day as they were back in 1949.

The May 1948 Outdoor Life magazine has an article called “Jeep Posse Fights Fire & Flood”, but I can’t find a reasonable priced issue. If anyone happens to have that article or  the magazine, I’d be interested in sharing the story.

This issue includes (from a worthpoint auction),  “Jeep Posse Fights Fire & Flood”, ” Turkeys of the Tall Peaks” and ” This Happened to Me”. There is also a print suitable for framing titled ” The Battle with the Wolves” by Fred R. Zepp. There are to many vintage ads such as Champion Outboards, Remington, Dupont, Heddon, Dipsy Doodle Wood Manufacturing Co., True Temper The Rod of Champion, Calvert, and more to mention, there is a color ad for Old Thompson Brand Blended Whiskey on the back cover.

1949 Article on the Bountiful Jeep Posse

This Desert News Magazine August 14, 1949, article titled “Knights of the Jeep” highlights the Bountiful Jeep Posse. Unfortunately, I could only find a scanned version with readable text in black and white. The scanned photos are poor. I did manage to locate a couple small colored photos of the article, so I’ve cobbled all the information together.

Here’s the link to the original article in Google News

There is some great Bountiful Jeep Posse info at the Utah State Historical archives.

1. Early video of Jeep Posse in action. Unfortunately, there seems to be no way to embed the video on this page, so …. Click on the photo below. A play button will appear. Click on that and a popup window with the video will appear. Neat video worth a view.

Bountiful City Jeep Posse

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images Jeeping, Roll Cage • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

First published 09/02/2012: The February 1948 Issue of Popular Mechanics Magazine published this fascinating look at the Bountiful City Jeep Posse, an organization that worked as a volunteer Search and Rescue and Fire Fighting group out of Bountiful, Utah. Started in 1946, the organization is still in existence.

I found this article that provides additional history from the 2006 in the Deseret News.  Though they own fewer jeeps and have more trucks, they are still helping their community.   I’ve contacted the newspaper to see if I can communicate with the members to get some more information about them and, possibly, some additional jeep pictures.

The Images below all come from the Popular Mechanics Magazine article.  Note the jeep in the background of the bottom image on page 3 has a full cage, the earliest example of a full cage I’ve seen.

Following the article, I’ve included pics of two ads, too.

Bountiful Jeep Posse and Racing

• CATEGORIES: Features, Racing • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Having lived in Salt Lake City for ten years, I know the area pretty well. So, I’m surprised by just how active the four wheel drive clubs were in the valley.  For example, I just read a short article about the Utah County Jeepettes, a group of women (I think wives of jeepers) that organized events.  In addition, there were Jeep Posses in Utah County, Salt Lake City, and Sevier County, Utah.

As you can see in this picture, taken at the 1970 Pioneer Jeep Rally in Bountiful, held by the Bountiful Jeep Posse, this wasn’t just about Search and Rescue. Racing had become popular, too, just as it had taken hold in many other places. The first Pioneer Jeep Rally was held in 1965. By 1970, the event attracted racers from several intermountain states.  Two main events were held at the Pioneer Jeep Rallys, a hill climb and an obstacle course.

The article and picture below were published by Four Wheeler Magazine in July, 1971. To me this picture could easily have been taken above the city of Bountiful or Centerville.  It looks like the staging and parking was done along the valley’s bench.
