Photos from Slides of a Modified Dually CJ-5 on eBay

UPDATE: Barney Goodwin (of Barney’s Jeep Parts) sent this 1973 photo out of Houston showing another possible example of an orange city-of-Houston CJ-5 painted similarly to the jeeps below.

1973-houston-barney-goodwin

Barney added, “This photo was taken in June, 1973 in my hometown of Houston. A neighbor who was an official for the City of Houston owned it. (His city car is to the left of the Jeep in the photo).

Like the Jeeps in the posting (below), I believe this had been a fleet Jeep, special ordered for a construction company, municipality or county. It had the same hard top as in the photos (see the doors propped against the wall behind it. Out of sight but in my copy is the windshield. It is orange also) Note the orange hinges, mirror arm, etc.

The changes he made to it were sand tires (the beach was 50 miles nearby) which I believe were on the Kelsey deep dish rims used on the Renegade and Renegade I, and also the white upholstery .

It was neat to see him cruise around on hot Houston summer days in this- just as it appears.”

A 1968 image from a slide on eBay shows a dually CJ-5 that’s been modified in an unusual way. Too bad the quality isn’t better.

A second photo on eBay reveals there were two jeeps at the 1968 equipment show in Houston, the jeep above and a second dually CJ-5 with a back hoe. Unfortunately, the image isn’t hi res enough to reveal much about the jeeps:

1953 CJ-3B Dually/Auger Phoenix, AZ $4000

“This Jeep was sitting for many years. It was an auger during its working life. I got it from a guy who installed fences along property lines in Apache County in Arizona’s White Mountains, intending to get it running but it became a project that went to the back burner.

I took the head off to see why the engine did not turn completely over and discovered that one of the valves is stuck. The cylinders are smooth and free of any scoring and the pistons move freely up until the point where the valve sticks. The Jeep was down due to a broken gear in the auger’s drive mechanism not because there was a problem with the engine or transmission. The original F head engine had been swapped out with a CJ2A L head engine.

I bought a bunch of parts for it. I have a replacement starter, distributor, carburetor, rear drivers side brake drum(already installed), master cylinder, brake lines, wheel cylinders and rebuild kits, shift knobs and rubber boots, etc. I even bought a new 6 volt battery for it but never installed and now due to sitting, it fails to hold a charge. It may be salvageable by opening the case and desulfering it. They are all included. All the parts for the auger are there including the broken pinion gear that needs to have the broken teeth built up or a new gear made up.I am selling it as is as I do not have the time to continue it.

“Up for sale is my 1964 Kaiser Willys CJ5 tuxedo park. It’s my 4th ground up restoration. I’ll start with what I didn’t do which was changed the gears in the axles as they looked great. And also I did not paint it as you could see. It’s original color was red. I did replace every race and bearing as well as front and rear hubs. All new 10” brake system (tuxedo park) front to back including cylinders and lines. All new fuel system front to back.

Completely rebuilt original Hurricane 4cyl engine. Show quality original rebuilt carburetor. Professionally rebuilt transmission and transfer case. All new u-joints. New alternator (tuxedo park had them factory) . The body is a reproduction all metal and not a bit of rust. Radiator and hoses all brand new. Right now it has a dealer sold dually farm kit on the back which is easily removed. There are seven brand new wheels and tires. Interior is all new and includes a new “Vintage Air”heater and defrost system.

Glass is new and it comes to the brand new best top super top. Frame is an excellent shape as I replace the original. Also there’s a brand new wiring kit from Walks 4wd along with an electronic distributor. I’m sure I missed a lot of items that I added to this so any questions feel free to contact me.

Oh, Also for this price will be extra parts such as the Tuxedo Park three on the tree transmission and shifter as well as the original transfer case plus many other parts. Just in case you’d like to restore it back to a tuxedo park. Approximately 150 miles on rebuilt engine.”
