Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. “I have a 1951 Willys M38 military 1/4 ton Jeep in unrestored condition for sale. M38 ‘flat fender’ serial MC45xxx, built 12-51. The body does have some rust and body-putty patchwork but otherwise is in a reasonably restorable condition. The M38 has had its original engine replaced by a F4-134 Hurricane and thus a hole was cut in the hood for clearance. I do have a more correct L-134 engine listed for sale elsewhere. The 24v electrics were removed and rewired by 12v stock equipment. The brakes have been rebuilt and the vehicle was runnable as of 2008, but has been under tarp since then, and has deteriorated. It has blackout lights front and back that are operational. All dash lights and gauges work. I have reluctantly decided to sell my toy to finance my hotrod build. 1951 Willys M38, This is a old Socal build. I bought this with the intentions of painting it and making it purty. However I fell in love with its 60’s metallic gold color and imperfect nature. California assigned VIN, unknown mileage, with a early 80’s 4 bolt main 350 chevy with late 60’s camel hump heads. cast iron intake with a holley 4BBl. new HEI ignition, corvette radiator and corvette Harrison tank. rebuilt T-18 trans with Dana 18 Transfercase and Warn Overdrive. New clutch, flywheel, Ramshorn manifolds, with brand new Dual exhaust with Magnaflow mufflers. (SOUNDS GREAT). Stock axles with 5:38 gears. NOS warn locking hubs, new bearings, new tie rod ends. Very nice Power steering conversion. New Lecarra steering wheel on a old tilt column. Has oversized M38 gas tank, Stock seats (could use new covers). Hella H4 conversion head lights, LED tail lights, Mismatch VDO and SW gauges. Just installed a NEW Rancho 2.5″ lift with 1/2″ warrior shackles and New Rancho Shocks. Very nice wiring with sealed junction boxes and HD battery cables. Has 4 decent 33×12.50×15 Yokohama MT tires and a BFG spare. ALSO has 5 Eagle 589 wheels with Champion beadlocks (these are REAL beadlocks). Roll Cage with a Custom made bikini top. (no full top, but they are still avail via bestop)

“This M38 was taken down to the bare frame and reassembled in 2014-2015. It is not a show quality vehicle but if you want a good solid driver this is the one. No rot anywhere. Not a trace of bondo.

Everything works: lights, gauges, wipers, emergency brake…. Brakes have been redone – it will stop on a dime! You will see (included in the pictures) a list that is about 3 1/2 pages long, of items that have been replaced or repaired on this Jeep, totaling $5862.04. The only thing this Jeep needs is a new home.”

I was planning a complete restoration but seem to lack the time to do so. This vehicle is street legal.
It has been in the family for quite a long time. I purchased it from a cousin and they used it primarily on their hunting lease in South Texas. It has spent the last 20 years of its life covered in a barn.
After purchasing it, I purchased & installed 2 new batteries, 5 new tubes & tires, windshield, windshield molding, shifter boots, front blackout lights, fuel pump & OE fuel tank & cap. I overhauled the carburetor & flushed the cooling system. I also purchased (but have yet to install) some new steering components & speedometer cable.
This would be a great vehicle for hunting season and some local driving.

(08/04/2015) It has a few mods.
“Selling my 1951 M38. My 51 runs great, it is street legal and all lights/ gauges are operational. Engine is a 1964 Buick Skylark V6.
Comes with a tow bar that mounts in the front. The rear seat is raised and mounts in the back (easy to remove). I have the original engine hood cover if you want to lay down the windshield. Some extra accessories I never got around to install. I also have a remote feeder and rack that attaches into the rear hitch if interested (purchased separately).
I used this a weekend driver (when it’s not 100 degrees) and a hunting vehicle. I have camouflage seat covers for front and rear. All lights have been replaced with LED’s (extremely bright). I’m not in a rush to sell so make me an offer. I have title (clean) and i’m the second owner.
I will leave this AD up until it sells or I decide not to. I lost my ranch in recent hill country floods so I’m hoping it will find a new home where it can be appreciated. Please don’t waste my time with low ball offers.”
