• CATEGORIES: M-38

This seller would like to trade his flattie for a wrangler.  He’ll take cash too; the title says $11,000, but the ad says $8,000 – $10,000.

“Would like to trade my Willys & some cash for a quality, late model Wrangler with A/C, Auto, 6 cyl – Clean no junk please. My jeep is worth 8K – 10K”

1948 CJ-2A/CJ-3A/M-38 Durango, Ca **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A, CJ-3A, M-38 • TAGS: .

UPDATE: **SOLD** Going to Denmark

This is a combo jeep of some kind.  Looks pretty nice, though it’s not perfectly accurate.  Maybe it’s just the title that’s wrong somehow?

“A great little jeep, runs and drives excellent. The good stuff and everything I’ve added, replaced, rebuilt, etc: Has a clear Arizona title, titled a 1948 Willys Jeep is turn key, start it and go, needs nothing. Original flathead 4 cylinder engine, converted to 12 volt, looks and runs like it was rebuilt at some time, runs great, near silent and smooth with excellent oil pressure at 45-50 psi and never any smoke. Original transmission/transfer case, also rebuilt at some time, shifts very tight, quiet, never does the “2nd gear pop” like so many Willys. “

1953 M-38 Denver, Co $8000

• CATEGORIES: M-38

I’m not convinced this is actually a complete vehicle, given it appears the front driveline is missing.  If the lift was reduced significantly, as well as the price, then the chances of a sale will likely increase.  On the plus side, the body/hood/fenders look straight and the engine has been nicely fitted into the engine compartment.

“1953 flatfender m38a jeep for sale or trade for motorcycle. chassi off restore with new paint and all new hardware. complete 350 v8 conversion with all professional fabricated mounts and frame mods. 4 barrell carb, modified steering. spring over with rancho springs, 7″ lift, 31″ tires. shackle reversal …. it was custom built for friend that had to move away, no time for it my self. give me a call or write me back if interested it is valued around 8k but will consider any offer cash or trade. 1954 M-38 Dayton, VA **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: M-38

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay

This M-38(?) was just auctioned for $5500 on Monday on ebay, so it’s no longer for sale.  The strange thing to me is that it appears to be a M-38, with the glove box and the passenger side cutouts, but it doesn’t have a tail gate or the battery box on the passenger side.  Anyone have thoughts on why that might be?

“This is a 1954 Willy Jeep 4×4.  It’s considered a 1954 because of its chassis, however, it was restored as a 1947.  It has approximately 8,000 miles on the engine and a brand new battery.  This Jeep has been garaged since restoration and has a beautiful, red color.  It has a 3 speed, manual transmission and again, is 4×4.  It does not have a top, however, they can be purchased. A family member restored the vehicle approximately 18 years ago and recently, signed the title over to me. “

1950 M-38 Bonnie, Ill eBay

• CATEGORIES: M-38 • TAGS: .

Probably the worst feature on this 18,000 mile M-38 is the paint job — the painting over of gauge rims always detracts from the quality.  The driver side springs look a little fatigued as well.  Otherwise, it looks to be a good restoration candidate.  The seller does not mention the jeep specifically in the ad (a little odd) — instead, the seller describes a little history of the M-38.

“The M38 Jeep was the first post-WW II jeep, based on the civilian model CJ-3A, but upgraded for military use. It was known by Willys as the model MC. It featured flat fenders, a one-piece windshield, bottom-mounted wipers, a fuel filler on the left side near the driver’s seat, protruding headlights, and an air vent at the bottom center of the windshield frame. The 80-inch wheelbase M38 weighed 2,750 pounds.”

Mitch rolls his CJ-3A on ‘flat’ ground

• CATEGORIES: M-38, News

To make me feel better about cutting my brake line, Mitch sent me this series of images of him rolling his jeep last year at Rimrock (Washington State) on 'flat' ground. It kind of looks like Mitch's jeep rolled over and played dead to get out of the mud.  Another way to look at it is that, if you are going to roll over, smarter to do it on flat ground rather than on a steep hill …. but right in front of a no parking sign? (see last pic)

Here's Mitch's take on it:

"Here's the series of pics…..That mud was real thick….In the process of rocking it back and forth I was making good progress of getting out….When the front end finally pulled the rear out of the hole, it immediately slid to the left and dropped the left front tire off the little ledge you can barely see in the pics. I had enough momentum and it was enough of a drop that the jeep just slowly flopped on the left side. No damage at all. The cage and tires were the only things that touched ground."

1952 M-38 San Diego, CA **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: M-38

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $2500.

This seller has plenty to say about this jeep.  The seller states “Value with basic OD paint and canvas for the top and seats and some basic parts ($2000 invested). —$6000 – $8000 on ebay.”  This may be true, but it underestimates the amount of work necessary.  That said, it sounds like there is a good deal of original m38 here.

“Here it is: 1952 Willys M38 (not M38A1) All original data plates intact – The Good: Original Motor 4cyl, flathead Go Devil, No modifications to the frame – body – running gear or anything, Had 95% of the stock trinkets – ie: blackout lights etc., Still set up as a 24V system, Never painted other than the yellow over OD green, Body is 95% sound ( I removed most of the paint to verify this)…”

Builds — Craig Ellis’ M-38

• CATEGORIES: Builds, Features, M-38

I don’t know whether Craig is finished with his jeep or not, but he certainly had some terrible rot to deal with.  I’ve linked to the ‘Golden Triangle Jeep Club’s’ bulletin board for this Build story.  Below is the pic of Craig’s M-38 body:

you could draw a line down the middle of the body and replace all of the driver’s side floor to be safe. i’m gonna avoid catalog bought floor panels and construct my own from 16 gauge sheetmetal along with new crossmembers. i got a pair of Wagoneer Dana 44s last weekend and am working on the suspension, which will be stock waggy leafs in the front and YJ leaves out back. I picked up a Chevy 4.3 V6 to use and can’t decide on which tranny to go with, but i’m thinking SM465 b/c Novak offers a really short adapter to the Dana 18 case….”

Builds – 1951 m38 Glendale, Az on Ebay — The Rhino Hunter

• CATEGORIES: Builds, Features, M-38 • TAGS: .

This build is for sale on eBay.  There are plenty of pics.  Note the m606 in the background of one of the ebay pics.

“This is a really unique combination of old and new and we’ve had a ton of fun in it. This rig started it’s life as a military M38 until the previous owner started modifying it as a back country rock crawler. When we got it, it had wasn’t much to look at, was missing a windshield but ran and drove so well we had to have it. It is heavily modified to be a safe, comfortable, go anywhere ride. We call it The Rhino Hunter as it has effortlessly shamed a few ORVs in the mud and rocks…”
