Raffle: 1952 M-38A1 in Fryeburg, ME

• CATEGORIES: Fire/Police/Industry Vehicles, M-38A1 This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

More than half the tickets are sold I am told: Tickets are $100 and only 100 will be sold. The raffle won’t take place until they are sold.

“WIN THIS JEEP! 1952 Military Willys Jeep M38A1 – Surplus military unit acquired by the Fryeburg Fire Department upon military retirement. All original, 24 volt system, blackout lights, and new batteries with all maintenance required to maintain readiness. Steel top is bolted on and is easily removable to return this Jeep to its original configuration. Gas can and spare tire mounts currently attached to the top will bolt back onto the tailgate as designed. Always stored indoors and climate controlled. This is a little-used time capsule that could easily be restored or enjoyed in it’s current condition. Includes original military records but no title as Maine won’t issue a title to any vehicle older than 1995.

We are raffling this Jeep off to the winning ticket holder. Tickets are $100 each and are limited to only 100 tickets. That’s a 1 in 100 chance if you buy one ticket or a 50 times better chance than getting a hole in one golfing. Buy more tickets and your odds increase! The drawing will be held as soon as all 100 tickets are sold. All proceeds will go towards the purchase of a new ATV Wildlands Firefighting unit. We’re replacing the old with the new and you have the opportunity to benefit while helping out a worthy cause. Tickets are available from the Fire Chief most weekdays at our Main St. fire station or from various members of our Fire Department.”

(01/15/2015) Looks solid.

“1955 Korean War M38A1 Willy’s Jeep that is in excellent condition. I have receipts, work order, maintenance logs going back nearly 20 years. This jeep has had a lot of time, effort and money invested into it over the years including a full engine overhaul (at a cost of nearly 3.5K– nothing was skimped. Vehicle has approx 2700 miles since engine overhaul. I currently drive the jeep when weather permits in parades and military funerals. The paint is from Quantico U.S. Marine Base and is Marine Chemical Resistant paint approximately 8 years old. Every thing works on the jeep. Gages, horn, lights and has new spark plugs, wires, new radiator and has a very hard to find military antenna. This is a 24 volt system that has 2 new military batteries. This is not a frame off restoration but everything else is 100 percent. All new canvas on seats and top. There is an AM/FM/CD radio
with 9″ speakers mounted in two ammo cans in the rear of the jeep. Five new military tires and tubes”

Sellers has done some work.

“For sale is a true Army jeep, not a cj that has a coat of od green. I have a Wisconsin title in my name with the military vin. It has been converted to 12v, and still has all the blackout lights and switches. The tub is fairly solid, not perfect, but a great start. I put all new axle bearings, seals, wheel cylinders, brake shoes and lines, as I started restoring it from the bottom up. It has a buick v6 with a twin stick. Has bumperetts, pintle hitch, jerry can and holder, spare tire carrier, canvas loops, lifting shackels and brackets, and many more expensive and rare hard to find parts. It also has the fold down grill, so it must be an early 53.”

“This military Willys needs an engine installed. It is wired for 12 volts. I have all the parts for the original F head engine (except the carburetor) that will go with it. The odometer reads 97333. I am not interested in parting it out. It had an F head installed, but it gave out, and I no longer have the interest or the health to replace it. The buyer could put in another F Head or sell the parts to help finance putting in a different engine such as a small block V-8 or a V-6.

1962 M-38A1 Harford County, MD $15,000

• CATEGORIES: M-38A1 • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: Still Available.

(12/20/2014) Seller believes this is 1 of 300 Marine M-38A1s. While the Marine M-38A1s from 1960-1967 were slightly different from the standard M-38A1, I could not verify how many were ordered. But, I would think it was greater than 300?

“One of only 300 Vietnam era Jeeps made and issued to the U.S. Marines. Complete restoration last year. Motor, transmission, rear end completely rebuilt, as was the suspension, wheel cylinders and brakes. It has a new battery, military tires and wheels, custom camouflage paint job. Converted to 12 volt electrical system, has turn signals, oil pressure, temperature, voltage gauges that are new but look like originals, electric fuel pump. Snorkel and water fording custom exhaust. Best part is a Browning 50 caliber machine gun that uses propane and oxygen to fire up to 7 rounds a second. Was used by a funeral home in Ohio to lead in military funerals and fire a salute. Has a new military issue canvas top and a new rear seat for passengers. This jeep could be hired to local funeral hours at 300-400 dollars per hour for military funerals. I recently retired and am divesting of my 4 military vehicles and other equipment to make money to travel.”

(05/26/2013) “This 1954 Willys M38-A1 Jeep (Korean war era) was completely restored a few years ago to nearly like-new condition in olive drab with matching canvas upholstery and top. Attention to detail throughout. Extra clean frame, no rust, this jeep is a true eye catcher and a lot of fun to drive around town. Complete engine tune-up done approximately 12 months ago. Engine runs very strong on 4×4 or 4×2. This jeep drives very well, as a correctly restored and mechanically sorted 1/4-Ton 4×4 should. It has all the right military jeep stuff, including decals, combat lights, jerry can and spare. Door safety straps and reproduction of the original maintenance and operation manual are included. The Jeep has a clean California title.”

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $8000.

(12/28/2014) Looks like a good price.

“I’ve got a mostly original Willys M38a1. Very good condition and always kept in the garage. Great for cruising around town and I always get complimen’s when filling it up. Runs and drives great, but I don’t get the chance to drive it much anymore. It’s got the 4 cylinder engine with the 3 speed manual and twin stick 4×4 transfer case.
Backseat, and all buckles, and about 75% tread on the tires.
12 volt conversion.
It has the blackout light, but is not hooked up.
Missing the emergency brake cable.
Shifts smooth, but you have to double clutch from first to second. It’s done that since I got it, I’ve never fixed it because it doesn’t bother me. Does not grind. Might be a good winter project for somebody with more time, or just do what I did!
Engine rebuilt by a professional shop, I have the receipts. It does drip a little oil though, nothing major.
The odometer reads 1,876.
The pictures should give you a pretty good idea of the condition, if interested in taking a look, please give me a call or text or shoot me an email and I will get back to you ASAP!”

“1953 M38A1 Military Jeep in nice condition.
I have owned this Jeep for around 20 years. Around 4 years ago, I had the dents and dings taken out, primed and painted by a local auto-body shop. I did not have them fully disassemble the jeep as that would have been a little too pricey for me. As such, the more hidden areas (like under the fuel tank) are not painted in Army green, nor was the underside of the vehicle. The paint was researched by the Surplus outfit in Oroville and that is where I purchased it. I have a gallon of it left for touch-ups or doing what was not done before.
There are several military gizmos still on the Jeep: It has a pintle hitch, the small black-out lights below the headlights, the canvas-bow brackets mounted on the side, several placards (in brass) showing the serial number, etc, several tie downs for a top and the shovel bracket under the hood.
The floors are (amazingly) rust free and the tool chest beneath the passenger seat is intact with only a small bit of rust. There is a bullet hole in the floor of the tool chest (?) that was there when I purchased it, but not in the lid. It’s something you can ponder over with your friends.
The Jeep needs a thorough ‘going-through’ to check and replace seals where necessary.
The bottom canvas on both front seats need to be replaced but the remainder is quite serviceable.
There is a rear seat bench, painted-to-match of the correct type and the canvas is there.
All 4 tires are military-type and show very little (if any) wear. There is a spare wheel and military-type tire or serviceable but older vintage. There is a painted-to-match roll that just hasn’t been re-installed after the painting.
The jeep starts, idles, runs and drives. I believe the engine (a 4 cylinder) is original and has a new fuel pump and tune-up around 3 years ago. The battery is old, but it starts and the lights work. It has been converted to 12V. The battery well is funky and could use some protective coating.
The speedometer, water temp and oil pressure appear to work. The fuel gauge does not.

I have replaced many parts. It’s been converted to 12 volts. Has the full top in good condition. Would benefit from another frame off. Parts are easy to find and easy to work on. If you are not familiar with this generation of “Jeep” this is a military vehicle from the Korean War Era. This is certainly a very clean and complete example. Clean title in hand. Won’t last.
