Glenn Miller’s Jeep Band

• CATEGORIES: Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

According to the University of Colorado, in 1943 Glenn Miller was asked to “organize a group of outstanding AAF bands to boost morale.  Each would contain musicians especially selected from the draft.  Each would be trained to play both inspiring marching music and outstanding dance band music.  He envisioned himself as a morale and band builder.  While working to achieve his objectives, Miller encountered frustrating opposition from some officers within the military bureaucracy.  He did, however, have powerful allies in Washington, who helped him to circumvent red tape.”

Called the “Band of the Training Command of the Army Air Forces under the direction of Capt. Glenn Miller” and stationed at New Haven, Ct, Miller continued to run into some problems. “A famous, if exaggerated, story soon circulated wherein a military official scolded Miller for ruining traditional Army marching music, saying that Sousa marches were as perfectly fine in 1943 as they had been in 1917, to wit Miller reportedly replied, “Tell me, Major, are we still flying the same airplanes that we did in 1917?”

Despite continued flack from those who disagreed with Miller’s plans, Miller continued to make changes. A newsreel eventually captured a practice session. “The newsreel showed off what was called the ‘jeep band’.   That is, the marching band’s big drum sets and drummers that were carried aboard jeeps and driven alongside the musicians as they marched on the Green or at the Yale Bowl.  The AAF apparently thought Miller was doing the right thing because he simply kept on doing it, much to the delight of the young people in the services who were marching and listening to Miller’s “updated military music”.

This image comes from the University of Colorado Music Department.  I searched for other images on the net, but didn’t have any luck.

The Wonderful Life of Wilbur the Jeep by Wilbur Schram

• CATEGORIES: Artists/Drawings, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

You might have seen one or another of these images illustrated by Normal Rockwell, but did you know there’s a story as well?  Published in the January 29th, 1944, edition of the Saturday Evening Post, the story was written by Wilbur Schram, who went on to be called the “father of communication studies” in the United States. The story appears to be a fun, fictional tale of a jeep named Wilbur and his exploits.  Unfortunately, I could not find any copy of the full text anywhere on the net.

Here is the best snapshot I found on Flickr about the article.

Here are closeups also found on Flickr

Bobcat Fiberglass Body and Front Clip Vancouver, Wa **SOLD**

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $300.

Here’s a good price on a complete body kit, even if it does need some repairs.  I don’t think the Bobcat bodies are as old as 1958, though I don’t know the initial date of production.  I don’t recognize the style of taillights.

“Old Willys fiberglass body, hood, fenders, and grill can be yours right now!  Approx 1958 is the model year.  This is a “bobcat” fiberglass set, needs just a little work. This project can be yours for 300 or best offer!”

1942/43 GPW De Soto, MO **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: GPW (Ford MB) This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $1200.

The seller indicates this is in bad shape and it sure looks that way.  The seller says no phone calls unless serious, but doesn’t list a phone number.

“I have a Ford GPW project jeep for sale, I am trying to decide whether or not I want to keep it for a future project or just sell it now. This is not a fire sale, but if someone wants the stuff they can buy it, but I am not giving it away.

I have the entire jeep, 1942 # GPW 46940, it is in fairly bad shape, but could be restored. No hood, and the grill has been cut on and will need replaced, the dash has been cut, and someone cut a tailgate in it. Red in color now. No side handles. Windshield frame is good, inner windshield frame needs repaired or replaced. Has good WWII Trico vacuum wiper motors that are still attached. No seat frames. No combat rims, no top bow brackets, etc. Front frame horns need replaced as a custom bumper has been welded on, rear bumper is also custom.

Floor pans in front are not too bad, rear has holes, half of the hat channels are surprisingly good. Rear storage boxes have small holes in them.

NO TITLE or Data Plates.

I also have a WWII Ford GPW Jeep Engine for sale. It is GPW 114579, It does not have a GPW cylinder head, but instead comes with an early Willys unit with no “Jeep” or “Willys” cast into it. The piston, rods, and crank are still in it. Had been bored .030 over and .010 under on the crank, and will need to be bored again or probably sleeved due to rust on the cylinder walls. No obvious cracks anywhere, the area under the distributor looks good.

The engine is just a short-block, no intake, exhaust, or any accessories, just the block, crank, rods and pistons, timing chain and cover, and camshaft.

I also have a GPW marked T-84 trans that will need rebuilt, and a GPW marked transfer case with correct parking brake mechanism for sale as well. I will take $500 for the pair of them.

I will take $700 for the jeep.
$500 for the engine
$500 trans and transfer case

If you want the whole thing, engine, transmission, transfer case, and the jeep, I will sell it all for $1200.”

Claus writes, “The past weekend my brother was asked, by one of his friends, to provide his jeep as their wedding car. Apparently the jeep was centre of attraction and completely shadowed the newlyweds hehehe :-). It even was part of the decor at the reception hall.”

I found another example of this rig in “The Story of the Jeep

According to the CJ-3B Page, Willys-Overland considered a large delivery truck back in the erly 1940s, but apparently decided not to pursue them at that time.

1954 CJ-3B Kalispell, MT **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3B • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE:  **SOLD** Was $1550

This looks like a great price.  That’s only 500 miles from me … hmmmm.

“1954 CJ-3B. This early CJ is in good condition and runs very well. The carburetor has been rebuilt along with a new fuel pump and filter. The fuel tank was removed and cleaned then treated with a chemical sealant made especially for the task of restoring old fuel tanks. The original 4-cylinder engine also received new plugs, wires, oil, filter, etc. this past year.

The drivetrain is original and in proper functioning condition. The 4-wheel drive works as well as hi/low range. The electrical system is the original 6 volt and also functions properly. Head/brake lights, turn signals and even the electric wiper (converted from vacuum) all operate well.

The hydraulic plow works. It’s lifted by a single cylinder and swivels manually. It has a fresh coat of Caterpillar-yellow paint on it.

The interior of the CJ is pretty basic with a late-model bench seat put in sometime in the past. There is an under-dash heater plumbed in but its working condition is unknown at this time. The fuel gauge does not work; there is no sending unit in the tank. The windshield has several cracks.

The major areas of concern on the vehicle are the brakes and front suspension. The brakes do work, they are just very soft and the pedal goes to the floor. The fluid is full so likely the master cylinder is shot and/or the brakes need bleeding. The front suspension is very worn from carrying the plow for many years. Also of concern is most of the tires have very little tread and all are severely weather-checked.

Overall this is a very sound Willys that can be restored or used as is for plowing in the winter (even has a block heater). I haven’t spent a lot of time underneath it but there is not a lot of rust. You should come make that evaluation yourself. I can get more detailed photos of any areas of concern if you’re a very serious buyer. Realize it’s nearly a 60 year old vehicle though and priced very reasonably. MT title is in hand; vehicle has not been registered for the road since the early 1980’s.”

1946 CJ-2A Kalispell, MT **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE:  **SOLD** Was $750

It looks like there is value here.  Note the seller will throw in an overdrive for another $250.

“1946 CJ-2A.  This vehicle does not currently run, it’s a project. The previous owner said it ran great until the trans broke. The transmission (T-90) is out of the vehicle and needs rebuilding. The input shaft is damaged. The brakes are non-existent and the is some rust but not too bad.

This CJ has been modified with a Saginaw steering box and a 12 volt conversion. The hood and windshield frame depicted in the first photo are no longer on the vehicle. The hood was poorly repaired with bondo and the windshield frame was rusted badly. I have since found a better hood and windshield frame, they will be included with the sale of the vehicle. Additional modifications include the installation of a later F-head engine with a low-profile Holley carb. This carburetor is desirable as it allows you to keep the stock hood without cutting a hole in it for air-cleaner clearance. The carb has been rebuilt, the fuel-pump (glass-bowl type) has been cleaned and inspected.

I also have a Warn overdrive for this CJ and I will include it for an additional $250. The OD is not available separately; I’ll let the entire package go for $1000 firm. The tires and wheels may also stay with me depending on the results of the CJ-3B sale. This CJ will have the wheels and tires from the 3B should this sell before the 3B does. I’m keeping one of these Willys but two is kind of too much (I’m told).”

At the very least it needs paint and glass.  Other than that it appears a good deal of work has been done.

1950 Willys Panel Delivery: Extremely unique running and driving project. Makes a great ratrod, or take it to the next level for a sweet street rod, lots of potential!

The top is chopped (excellent job), windshield is in, no side windows or rear windows, flat glass – should be inexpensive to have glass cut for it. It has shaved door handles, custom front and rear bumpers, wood floor in rear, bucket seats, console and a tilt steering column.

Small Block 318 w/automatic transmission, dual exhaust, no smoke, no leaks, no ticks, runs smooth.
I have the other 2 matching “old school” wheels that match the rear.”
