Sunday Trip over Rocky Canyon Rd & Aldape Pass

• CATEGORIES: Biscuit This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Sunday was a perfect day temperature-wise to take Biscuit out for a long test run into the Boise Foothills.

Of course, It took all of about 5 minutes into the hills before the engine overheated.  For some reason the auto temp sensor wasn’t turning on the electric fans.  So, using some extra wire i had, I wired up the fan directly to the electrical system, which bypasses the temperature sensor.

After resolving that issue, it took all of another 5 minutes before we hit a gate that wouldn’t open until May 15 … sigh.

So, I drove back down the hill, through town, and tried a different access road that’s on the East Side of Downtown Boise. This time, we found some trails!!  We even found some difficult enough terrain to engage four wheel drive and low range.

After an hour of driving, we found ourselves at the top of a pass and made a left, tackling some more difficult terrain.  We eventually hit some snow and figured that without a winch, turning back was the smart option.  When we got to the pass, I made a left and headed down the other side of the mountain.

As I managed to leave the map at home, we were travelling slightly blind, so we depended heavily on serendipity.  Eventually, we found ourselves at one of two tributaries to Lucky Peak Reservoir.  Because the lake is low, we could actually drive along the reservoir, which is where these pics were taken.

Instead of heading back over the canyon road, I took the highway back to Boise, which meant Biscuit got to drive at 55 for an extended length of time.  All in all it was a successful trip!  Here are some pics from the day’s adventure.

Here’s a beautiful Commando!

“1968 Jeepster Commando.  I have owned this fantastic Jeep for several years. I personally (and the previous owner) have completely renovated and improved this classic from bumper to bumper. I have over $19,000 in receipts for just the improvements not including the $4,000 paint job.

Newer 4.3 liter GMC Vortec V-6 from a 1995 Jimmy. Installed when it had 24,000 miles. It now has less than 36,000 and runs as you would expect (like new!) It is the ideal size for a retro-fit and has more-than-plenty of power and torque. Good gas mileage too. I have been using synthetic blend oil. It does not use any oil nor leak a drop, and of course, does not ever smoke. Lots and lots of new stuff under the hood including new radiator and steel fan. Matching wiring harness and correct wiring through-out. Computerized fuel pump …”

1961 FJ3 Fleet Van Republic, Wa eBay

• CATEGORIES: FJ • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

I haven’t seen one of these for sale in a few months.  There were several buyers looking for one.

“This is my 1961 or 62 not sure Jeep FleetVan.  It has the original F Head 134, but engine is stuck.  Van comes with a complete good running Fhead that was removed from a cj in favor of a v8 swap.  The van rolls and steers good, brakes kind of work.  The doors open great, and all interior covers are there.  So far the only missing Items I can find are the front bumper and orginal seat.  Two side windows are shot, but are flat glass and easy to replace.  This van would make a cool parade rig, or advertising for a business, maybe even a mini coffee/bagel delivery van.  Please feel free to ask any questions, I will try to answer them as soon as possible.  I can haul the van on my car trailer to spokane or moses lake if needed.  Sorry, no tittle.  Good luck.”

1956 CJ-5 Coalinga, Ca $1500

• CATEGORIES: CJ5 • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

It’s got some classic slot rims and a PTO Winch.  It looks like a great price.

“Sale is for a 1956 Willy’s Jeep CJ5- $1500.00 or best offer and as is condition. Jeep has a 1972 in-line (straight) 6 cylinder Ford Bronco motor, low gear ratio, PTO Wench w/approx. 2000′ of 5/16″ wire cable, electric fuel pump, new leaf springs with a 2″-3″ lift, new seals on the transmission, transfer case and rear differential, new muffler.

Jeep exterior and interior needs paint and the seats need to be re-upholstered. The wiring could also be updated.  This jeep is a strong runner but it is not good for use on public roads due to the low gear ratio (top speed approx. 45 mph) and age. This jeep would be great for hunting, off-roading, climbing, etc. The jeep has a tow bar attached to the front so it can be pulled to your destination. Keep reading for information from NADA Guides.”

2 flatties Van Cleave, LA **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A, CJ-3A, M-38 This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $2500.

(05/05/2008) My favorite line in this is that the seller has checked ebay and therefore knows that these aren’t just old jeeps, but doesn’t know enough to know what models they are.  So, the seller claims to know what they’ve got while at the same time claiming that they don’t really know what they’ve got. Ouch!

“I have two Jeeps, either M38s or CJ2s (sorry, I’m not a Jeep expert). I do know they are the original 1940s models and one had a PTO. I’ve had one person say they are M38s and another say they are early civilian CJ2s, but ??? Either way, they are hard-to-find. One is complete incl. engine, the other is minus the engine, but the rest of the drivetrain appears complete. Both need a fair amount of work if the buyer wants to restore them to original, but you could probably get a running jeep in a full weekend of work, maybe less. There is enough here to get one complete, running jeep and have a fair boneyard left over. One body is poor to fair, one is fair.  I’ve checked eBay, etc., and know that these are not just “old jeeps,” so please, no low-ball offers. I’m asking $2500.00 for everything.”

Toyota’s Jeep AK10 and Jeep BJ

• CATEGORIES: Fire/Police/Industry Vehicles, International, Other 4x4s This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

As usual, searching for something unrelated to Toyota lead me straight to the Toyota BJ (I was searching through some automobile history).  I knew very little about the Toyota Land Cruiser history, so the threads I’ll share below were very interesting to me.  The pics all came from the IH8MUD.com website, where there are plenty more pics of both the AK10 and the BJ.

THE AK10

According to Wikipedia, in response to a request by the Japanese government, Toyota developed the AK10 in 1942.  Apparently there are few surviving images and no surviving vehicles.  You can view the AK10 discussion thread at the IH8MUD.com website.

JEEP BJ

Again, according to Wikipedia, in 1950 the Korean War created demand for a military light duty vehicle.  The United States Government asked Toyota to build 100 vehicles based on Willys specs.  The following year, Toyota designed the BJ prototype.  While longer and more powerful (6cyl) than the 1/4 ton jeep, the BJ had no low range.  The National Police Agency (NPA) was impressed enough to put in an order for the Jeep BJ’s, which became their official patrol vehicle.  The BJ would have 3 different Models, a Touring model (BJ-T), a Radio model (BJ-R), and a Fire Engine Capable Model (BJ-J) [technically, I suppose these would be the english equivalent translations …].

In 1954, Willys-Overland put pressure on Toyota to cease using the “Jeep” name.  Technical director Hanji Umehara had the responsibility to rename the vehicle.  Interestingly, rather than compete with the Jeep label, he chose to compete directly with the Land Rover label.  He notes, “I had to come up with a name for our car that would not sound less dignified than those of our competitors. That is why I decided to call it ‘Land Cruiser’.”

Here are several images of the BJ that I found on the IH8MUD site.  You can see many more here The Toyota BJ ‘Jeep’ thread at the IH8MUD.com website.
