Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. 1952 was the first year for the M-38a1. I can’t remember seeing a top quite like this on an M-38a1. If you can scrape all the paint off, this may be very restorable.

Not a bad price for a non-rusty, full cage, buick v6, running jeep. Might even get it for less. Given the rope that ties the gear shift to the dashboard, I’d say project number one would be fixing the tranny from popping out of gear getting a nicer piece of rope to hold the 2wd in place 🙂

“1950 Willys CJ3-A Universal Jeep. Mechanically restored with rebuilt flathead 4cyl.engine, completely new brake system and completely rewired bumper to bumper including under dash and hood.Excellent frame,suspension,trans and transfer. Body needs restored or use as is. No top. Does have front and rear direction PTO with rear gear reducer. Use with pull type mower or other pto driven equipment. Who woulda thunk it? It turns out South Webster High School in Ohio adopted the Jeep mascot more than 50 years go. Though it’s not jeep the vehicle, rather it’s Jeep from Popeye, it’s still cool in my book.
“Before 1940, South Webster High School athletic teams had no official name, although local sportswriters sometimes referred to them as the “midgets.
However, in 1940 the rules of basketball, by accident, helped to produce the mighty JEEP. By the rule in 1940, coaches were not permitted on the playing floor to instruct players. Coaching had to be done prior to the start of the game or at half-time. During rest periods between the first and third quarters of play the team manager at South Webster would roll a small box onto the court to supply players with refreshments and first-aid materials. However, the coach at South Webster was accused (and rightly so perhaps) of sending in plays and instructive notes in this little four-wheeled box. Local fans were positive that when that little box was sent onto the floor, players were getting more than refreshments. Everyone knew that the box contained answers to the problems being presented by the opposing team.
Also in 1940, a favorite comic strip contained a character who knew everything. In 1936, the charater of “Eugene the Jeep,” a small bright-eyed creature from Africa who was all-knowing, was introduced into the “Popeye” comic strip. Popeye gave the Jeep to his girlfriend, Olive Oyl, as a birthday gift. The Jeep, whose diet consisted of orchids, helped popeye solve many difficult situations in his comic strip career.
Since the JEEP was all-knowing, some local South Webster people associated the coach’s box, containing messages to his players, with the comic strip character.
According to, what is now legend, the late Mayor of South Webster, Mr. Gilbert Havener, is credited as the first person to label the box as the “JEEP BOX.” The sports editor of The Portsmouth Times (now Daily Times), Lynn Wittenberg, picked up the term and used it in describing South Webster’s 1940 Scioto Country Tournament team.
The mascot was never officially adopted, but has been, since 1940, generally accepted….”
There’s a small chance this is a CJ-3B rather than a CJ-5. No pics shown.

There’s been a variety of non-stock updates to this CJ-3A.
“new body,interior,wheels,tires,shocks,top with doors,bumpers,gauges,glass,paint.this jeep was built for the deer lease but now is too nice, so it has to go. The jeep was rebuilt 3 years ago from the gound up and has less than 500 miles on it. it has a 289 ford v8 with the jeep 3spd. it has a dimond plate dash with autometer gauges,am fm cd player,6 point roll cage,led brake lights and front blinkers”
I’m not convinced this is actually a complete vehicle, given it appears the front driveline is missing. If the lift was reduced significantly, as well as the price, then the chances of a sale will likely increase. On the plus side, the body/hood/fenders look straight and the engine has been nicely fitted into the engine compartment.

I’m not sure what all is combined to make this flattie. The good news is that the body appears to be in excellent condition. Lots of large pics on the Ad allow for close inspection. The seller notes that this a currently a 2wd vehicle, though in one image it looks like there is a front pumpking visible.

This might be a ’44 or a ’45. It’s definitely a project. Lots of parts of pieces which the seller lists on the Craigslist Ad.
“I bought a ’44 or ’45 MB years ago with the intention of using it for a hunting rig. What I bought was rough, to say the least. Upon tearing into it I discovered a lot of wonderful parts. Appreciating history, I decided to do as much restoration as I could without going overboard. I acquired a lot of needed parts and slowly began the process. Well, many years later it’s going nowhere and I don’t have a hunting rig. I’d like to swap it for a license worthy and smog test exempt (CA) jeep that I can take hunting and occasionally to the grocery store….”

“I bought this with intentions of restoration but it isn’t going to happen. I replaced all the brake lines, hoses, wheel cylinders and master cylinder. It runs decent, will need an exhaust manifold. I’ve got the doors for the hardtop with good glass. Certainly not road worthy but a good candidate for restoration.”
Here’s a nice price on a buick v6 with the kenne bell high rise (which is what I’m running). It likely needs rebuilding, but it appears pretty complete. The image is pretty blurry.

No price is listed for these two M-715s. I have no idea what these are worth, but I don’t often run across them. The seller is clearing out his garage of tools and his field of vehicles. No specifics listed.

It might not be Redmond, but it’s located somewhere just east of Seattle. It looks like it has a SOA setup.

Brian sent in this find. He notes that CJ-5s like this in the midwest are hard to find without being plagued with rust. As Brian note, it’s also likely to have the offset 30 spline axles.

There’s some good updates to this jeep and it looks good too, but there’s also some unmentioned items that need fixing.

While it doesn’t appear to be in perfect condition, it does appear to be in very good, completely stock condition. This appears to be an excellent restoration candidate.

UPDATE: This jeep has been listed on eBay. In the last auction, the price reached $3650, but that was below the reserve. This time it appears there is no reserve.

This jeep has a tailgate and a later model grille,but no gas tank inlet. Maybe it’s a repro tub?
