why do people keep calling a winch( with an “i”) a wench??????! unless it’s got boobs it’s a WINCH!
My guess to your $64,000 question is that some people either don’t care about spelling;
or, they are confusing the winch the front of a Jeep with the wench with the bosoms on the front of a sailing ship (the masthead). (lol)

Seriously, I give up on stressing about spelling errors on the internet (at least I try to.) My biggest pet peeve is when someone advertises new “breaks” (brakes) on their Jeep. (My own brother did that once. lol.)
the front of the ship is the prow or the bow. this is were the figurehead is attached,never to the masthead. the ships crew could tie a wench to a mast for entertainment of the crew.
