A friend of mine was Captain in Intelligence was with the troops, that followed the entry soldiers and ( about 12 hours after the first troops) and the celebration was wild. The stories of what happened over the next few days are not on any Post cards ( except for the ones we used to pass among buddies before Playboy) . But he also got lucky and was in Paris on VE day also, and that was even wilder according to him.

Great Story Kerry! If you want to read another awesome story of this time period, I highly recommend the book, “Walkout”, by Henry C. Woodrum. It’s about a B-26 pilot (495th Squadon) shot down 90 days before the liberation of Paris, ten days before D-day. You can really feel the mood of the times, and how he narrowly escaped capture and even death many times. The French people really loved the Americans and what they did for them in hard times. It’s too bad their grandchildren don’t feel the same way about Americans today. Humans have short memories when it comes to history.

He remained friends with some in the underground that gave him safe haven in a time when food was scarce, and your neighbors snitched on you go be in good graces with the German occupiers. It was dangerous for everyone involved if he stayed in one place too long. Others that helped him didn’t survive the Gastapo’s torture and execution before liberation Day. If you or anyone else is interested I can buy personally autographed copies by the pilot’s son locally, and I will mail it to you. Or, check Amazon. It might still be there.
