    I understand the breathing but I don’t understand how the engine block keeps from cracking when it is how and cold water is on it. I assume there is protection for the sparkplugs.

    The engine has internal water so external isn’t going to hurt. If it was running dry and hot then dunking would crack the casting. I wonder about the switches, gauges, exposed bearings brushing etc in salt water. Although the WWII jeep was a 90 day vehicle.
