CJ-5 Body Serial Number Question

Dallas found this serial number on his body. Based on this thread, we believe it indicates an aftermarket body. Has anyone else run across similar numbers on their CJ-5 bodies?

He wrote, “I’ve got a 1959 CJ5.  It has the typical serial number data plate on the driver side firewall in the engine bay, but in addition, it’s also got a serial number stamped directly into the firewall on the passenger side in the engine bay.  Neither the location nor the number format itself are ones I’ve seen before on other CJ5s.  Have you ever seen a number there?  I’m wondering if it might mean I have an aftermarket tub.”

I cant speak on CJ5’s but I have run across numbers in a similar location on the drivers side of some flatty repop tubs.

The jeeps are long gone Dave but I did take a couple of pictures of the numbers for some reason at
the time and will have to do some looking when I get back home. No idea who made them since they
were all second hand. My guess is they were from the 70’s so probably JC Whitney or similar. At one point
I did a little research to try and find some identity’s on them but the closest I ever got was 4 or 5
people with the same questions I had. Seems like most of these tubs were on Veeps or Toyota powered
rigs that had been built. J.R.

J.R.: I believe the VEEP jeep bodies came out of the Philippines, as I bet the one above did. That would make the practice seem consistent.

Pascal: That’s possible, but the stamped number is very different from the standard jeep numbers. Stamping anything but a jeep serial number wouldn’t make much sense, unless you were the manufacturer putting your own number on it.
