UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $3200.

You don’t see too many jeeps with Suicide doors.

“After about 12 years, way too much money and 1,000s of hours of sweat, I have completed a rebuild of this CJ2A.

Engine Components: new plugs, points & condenser, adjust timing, re-core radiator, rebuild starter, new flywheel, new coil, rebuild generator, new relay, completely rebuild the transmission (all new gears, synchronizers and bearings), all new wiring (front to back), new Solex replacement carburetor for the original Carter, new voltage regulator, plug wires, front lights, ignition switch, battery, horn.

Suspension: new springs and shocks. A steel plate for bed ( I put it under suspension because without the extra weight (250#), it beats you up), new A/T tires, new brakes and lines, Pitman arm, Tie rods.

Body (here is where it gets interesting): sanded and repainted original tub (there were 5 layers of paint to get off which included the original red that CJ2A’s came with).

I picked up a 1974 mailman’s carrier off of a ranch and fitted the top and windshield onto the CJ2A. This gave me an enclosed cab with a rear door and electric windshield wipers. Since the original doors slid on rails, I decided to hinge them and make them suicide doors. I had to custom build some latches. In response to some questions…YES, the top can be removed!

I added spot lights in the back so that I can have some light while closing gates. Put new padding and covers over seats. Painted the inside of the jeep. Remounted the spare tire carrier. I am sure I did some other things to it but I believe you get the gist of this project!”

It sounds like this needs some work.

“I have a 1946 Willys Jeep that I had up at our cabin for the last few years for plowing snow, since it never was used, I am ready to part ways. The Jeep runs ok, but I am not sure I would plan on using it for daily transportation without spending a bit of time “refining” it.
It has a newer Jeep 4-cyl. engine (overhead valve). Good Tires/rebuilt carb.
It’s an old Jeep, so expect it not to be perfect. It is what it is……$2,500.00 OBO.
Thanks again for looking!!”

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $2800

This might be worth a look.

“I am selling my 1948 Willys Jeep. I have owned it for about 7 years and just don’t have the time to use or fix it. I rebuilt the original L-head 4-cylinder motor about 3 years ago because it had a rod knocking. Runs smooth now. In the last few years I have replaced the master cylinder, installed new clutch and new Solex carb, replaced the starter, installed alternator, installed Superlift 2.5″ lift springs, added winch and winch mount( Warn M8000). The floors were replaced by the previous owner. It now sits on 31″ BFG tires on black Cragar Soft 8 wheels. Right now it needs the brakes worked on, the lines are good but it needs new brake shoes, a wheel cylinder and a bleeder screw replaced. I have the title in my name. $2800 with winch or $2500 without winch and winch mount. Would prefer not to trade unless you make it worth while. Thank You.”

Builds: Claus Rebuilds a CJ-2A in South Africa

• CATEGORIES: Builds, CJ-2A, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

FEATURED JUNE 2010

Claus contacted me a little while back telling me he was from South Africa and asking if I’d be interested in seeing and sharing some pics of a CJ-2A he rebuilt.  Absolutely, I responded.  So, yesterday I received pics and a story of both his jeep and his brother’s jeep, which you can see here.  Thanks for sharing Claus!

Claus writes, “Its winter in the southern hemisphere and unfortunately this means wet weather for us folks in the Western Cape Area of South Africa. Sunny days are few in this time of year and I/we don’t plan many trips. It must be said that the nicest days are however also during the winter months – not too hot and no wind. All very positive aspects if you are day tripping with the old vehicles.

So now for the jeeps – There are not many flat fenders left in this part of the world – quite a few numbers of CJ2a were imported during the 1946-1949 for the purpose of farming. South Africa was also one of very few countries that ordered CJ2a’s in 1948 as Military vehicles. At that time the Union Defense Force (UDF) ordered 289 units, and these came in fact all standard from the factory in olive drap. Not many survived as they had to work hard on the farms or in service. Some that did continue to “exist” where built up as challenge vehicles and so the numbers decreased drastically. To date limited numbers are on the road – we don’t really have a vintage “jeep” club in the country so it is hard to tell how many are actually “alive”. It has however emerged that many people start to convert back to the original spec CJ’s which is nice.

I consider myself very lucky and after about 12 years of intensive searching, both here in South Africa as well as my home country Namibia, found a beautiful 1948 CJ2a in very good condition on a nearby farm. The Jeep stood for about 20 years on bricks in the owners shed so it has worked only for about 2/3 of its life and those must have been gentle years, because everything was still in very good condition. To top it all it had a complete PTO and monarch governor installed. The pto is currently off so I can restore it. I was also very fortunate to pick up a set of early WARN freewheel hubs (seen on the later pictures) So that in short is the story of my CJ2a. Attached are photos for reference.

Photo2: My Jeep during a short day trip on a nice summer day in the Swartland district. (It just fits so perfectly into the landscape – water reservoir and windmill)
