Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. (10/21/2010) Here’s an early Slattie.
“This is a 1942 Willys Slat Grill MB. Its a project I bought years ago and has been sitting in collection mode ever since. Meaning I have been accumulating the parts to restore her. I decided I wasn’t likely to get to this project or my #277 45 CJ so I’m letting them go. The 45 is gone so here goes the Slatty. I’m selling it just as I bought it with the exception of it now has the original slat grill on it as when I bought it someone had put a stamped MB grill on it. Guess they thought it looked better. The serial number of the slat is 112200 and the body tag and frame tag both match. The 3 tags are still on the dash but one has a small piece cut out of it for some unknown reason.The engine SN is MB219002 which I believe is a later motor. I’ve never tried to start it, but the motor turns freely. The transmission is original with the right hand fill and I believe the transfer case is original as well. The transmission and transfer case are stuck in gear as it sat outside for many years before I bought it. I’ve never tried to free them up or look at them. The drive shafts are disconnected so you can move it. I believe the spare tire carrier is correct. It has the “gas” gage and the 30 amp meter. The key switch is still there with the key. The windshield frame is rock solid. The hood has a round hole cut in it. It does have the riveted “slat grill” oil pan. The frame is good. It has one of the 2 hinge tool box lids in place with the lock. The drivers seat is the original split back rail but the pan has been opened up for the larger filler. Take a look at the pictures and if you have any questions just ask. If it doesn’t sell I’m going to spend a few hours on it and see if I can get it running and driving….”
Many readers will remember last May’s explosive expose on the Wally Cohn custom ‘jeep’ built in Germany. Ok, so maybe it wasn’t an explosion heard round the world, but there were a few of us who were interested.
Well, along those lines I found a MB/GPW at Hemmings which had been modified with fenders that brought the Wally Jeep to mind. Here are some pics from the Hemmings Post.

UPDATE: Brian picked this up today. He reports it has a near perfect GPW body with a MB frame. The engine has a Ford head with a 2a or 3a block. It has a T84. It came with a 3a windshield.
This appears to be sagging a bit. The body doesn’t appear too bad, but can’t tell for sure.

“1943 Jeep. Has a swapped in 283 from a corvette. I bought this as a project and have had no time to work on it. The previous owner claimed that it ran when he parked it, but had a problem with the clutch and had to be started in gear to move it. It has a towbar attached and can be towed locally easily. (04/17/2010) This is a project. Maytown … where the heck is Maytown? I had to look that one up.
“It is complete, but needs to be put back together. It has a clear title. It has two Chevrolet 4.3 liter V6 motors. One is carbureted, the other is fuel injected. The fuel injected motor runs for sure and is complete with computer and wire harness. The only thing missing is a fuel pump. It has a rebuilt Dana 18 transfer case (needs oil added). It has a rebuilt T90 3 speed transmission (needs oil added). It has new seats. It has new fuel cell. The body has surface rust, but is solid. It has extra fenders, hoods, and grills”

This MB is located at the Cole Land Transporation Museum in Bangor, Maine, and has an interesting history. According to the museum’s website, “his 1945 jeep served with the U.S. Army during World War II in Europe. After the war, it was given to the French government (French nomenclature in still on the dashboard). It was rebuilt by the French, declared surplus, and shipped to Duryea Motors, Brockport, New York in 1982. Galen Cole purchased it for display in the Museum.
Perhaps its greatest claim to fame is that the mold for the Maine World War II Veterans Memorial, located on the Museum’s grounds, was formed around this jeep; therefore, the jeep that is the focus of the Memorial is an exact replica of this jeep. It was chosen as the symbol of WWII because personnel of all branches of the service during that war used jeeps-whether generals, admirals, or privates.”

“I have a late production MB for sale… July 10th delivery date on dash plate with matching frame tag serial number. Still has T-84 military tranny….postwar civilian replacement engine. Has not run in two years. Engine will roll over. not siezed up…may be the original horn still mounted under hood….No gas tank…someone had cut out a hole on drivers side panel to fit a CJ gas tank fill neck.. Did not come with original front seats…Back panel uncut. there is some extra holes in body and holes that have been filled in some places.The body looks to be in fairly good shape as well as the frame…..This would be a good jeep for restoration. $4500.00 with the military tires on civilian rims and MB rear seat, or $4000.00 without seat and will put back on the wheels and tires that it came with.”

“1942 Willy’s MB Serial# 125537 directly from The Pacific theater. This is an older restoration showing wonderful patina on the paint with that “been there look”. No rust or holes in the usual places.. Engine block# is 220099 and has been previously rebuilt. 12 Volt system (alternator). Additionally, equipped with lifting rings front and rear. Perfect running condition. Vehicle has been fitted with a new carburetor, intake/exhaust manifolds, (NOS) complete exhaust, flywheel, Pressure plate, Clutch, throw out bearing, fork/linkage, new Transmission (Including Case) Rebuilt Transfer case, new Temp, oil pressure and ammeter gauges. It could just be my imagination, but that body looks like it could has more of a swoop for the passenger entrance similar to a pre-MB. This is worth a closer look.
