“For sale is a 1940 Willys MA prototype military jeep. It is my understanding that there was only 1,500 of these jeeps built and offered to the Army. This body style was never used again. I have learned that there are only around 30 of these jeeps left in existence. I have also been told by another MA jeep owner that this might be the only almost complete, running, original unrestored MA jeep in the world with visible WWII numbers on the hood. I feel that this jeep should never be restored or there will be no originals left. I don’t want to mislead you: the seats, bumper and gas tank are professionally reproduced duplicates. The gas tank was done by John Geesink from New Zealand. And the grill & seats were done by Jimmy Strauss in California.
This jeep was bought by my father almost 50 years ago. It was always kept inside. There is no rust problem. Has all 5 original wheels. The rebuilt original MA tranny needs to be installed. I have the shifting column. The windshield is off a Willys WWII slatgrill jeep. Motor is original. Radiator is not original. I have an extra MA head, extra bell housing, other top bow parts and machine gun strap footman loops (they are longer to allow for wider strap to secure machine gun to rear of jeep on both sides.) Jeep is not totally original, but close. It has wrong steering bell crank. Needs 2 notched axles, proper radiator, carburator, air filter, fuel filter, horn, back seat. What you see is what you get. As seen in pictures, the jeep has very little rust or damage to hat channels and body underneath. Forgot to mention: the rear wheel wells behind both seats, as seen in pictures hae been cut to allow seat to go back further. When my dad bought it, it had a bench seat in it.
I have mentioned that this jeep is a running jeep. Tires are no good and carburator may or may not need to be rebuilt before trying to start this jeep. Other than that, the new gas tank needs to be hooked up, a battery put in it and it should run, just like it did 50 years ago, when I watched my father shut it off and park it in the garage. Hope you get as much enjoyment from this jeep as we have. It is time for Dad to retire. Long live the Willys jeep!”

The Jeep has 24200 miles on it, the engine was rebuilt at 19058 miles by Rustys 4×4. The jeep has a 12 volt system with elec/vacume wipers, army data plates and black-out swithches. Recent brake and carburetor work, it has a Best Top and a Bikini top, rollbar and tow bar. Jeep enthusiasts consider this military jeep one of the best jeeps every built. “Military collectors take a look at a original 1945 Willys Jeep that my family has owned for over 30 years. This is a original unaltered Jeep that has the manual trans and 4 cylinder engine. I have the title so it is street drivable. It has been sitting in a covered area for a couple years and was running about a year ago. This Jeep would make a great resto project and it would take very little to get it running again. Once again I do have a title for it. I am located in south Charlotte. Hate to sell it but I don’t have the time to restore it and I hate to see it sitting and not being used as it should be”

If you are looking for some vintage off road tires, check these out. I don’t know when that S pattern down the middle was added. The seller notes these are Mini-Terrors. They look slightly different than the ones featured in this ad. They look hardly used.

Last month I discovered a letter I wrote in 1986 during my first summer at Roche Harbor. I sent it to my parents, who promptly put it a filing cabinet. Looking for some personal records, I discovered the letter. For anyone who hasn’t read my book (Finding Virginia) the following letter probably won’t mean much. For those that have read it, there are many familiar themes throughout the letter that also appear in the book. That fact my letter covers jeeps, cooking, and a girl shows you that I remember the summer of 1986 pretty clearly! However, one event I didn’t include in the book, because I didn’t remember it, was going on a date and having the jeep breakdown. That’s so classic me.
Before I get to the letter, below is a picture of my first jeep two months after I wrote the letter. Cullen and I had come over the Naches trail the previous day, damaging the fiberglass front passenger fender in the epic battle against gravity I describe in the book. We slept that night at the Beverly Dunes. In the morning, we drove towards Moses Lake. Around noon, we stopped and took this picture. After the picture, we proceeded to Moses Lake, then on to Idaho. We stayed in CDA for a couple hours, then started back to Anacortes by way of Stevens pass to catch the 6AM ferry back to the islands. It was a long day.
On the front of the jeep you can see a large chain, which, among other uses, was the shovel tie down. Behind that is a trusty warn winch that saved me many times. The grill is fiberglass and, though already patched once, split into two during this trip. The headlights are 5 1/2 rather than 7″. The smaller size and a wiring problem insured lighting at night wasn’t very good. As you can see, bungie chords were a must for holding down the hood. Wedged between the passenger seat and the roll bar is an old canvas collapsable bucket. It’s still in my parents garage. We carried an extra red gas tank, which is attached to the roll bar on the passenger side. If you look near the rear wheel well you can just make out the racing number from the 1985 summer convention.

The original two tone paint is beautiful. Very deep colors and gloss.
The chrome trim and bumpers are excellent with brillant shine
Has all its tires and hubcaps which are all original.
Driver in excellent working condition.
Battery box and cover excellent. Switch works but end piece broken off as seen in pic.
Tested with D batteries and all actions work great. Actions are; lighted headlights, mystery drive actions, and automatic steering with driver turning steering wheel.”
