Wanted: Some CJ-2A parts in Maine

• CATEGORIES: wanted This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Perhaps someone can help out this Willys owner.

“I’m looking for some Willys parts. Specifically looking for a radiator for a ’47 CJ-2A. Might also be looking for a REALLY GOOD 4-cyl flathead engine. Might be looking for other parts, whole Jeeps, or unfinished projects, depending on what you have. Maybe a good frame and/or tub for another project. Jeeps with 4-speed or Warn overdrive, or other interesting parts.”

Parts Jeep?

“47 Willys Jeep, L head 4 cyl. all there, not running, floor and seats gone Has Buick 6 that goes with it, probably only good for core. Really cool front bumper, steel 16.5 wheels, heater on floor of passenger side. Have soft top and doors, original under seat gas tank, extra jerry cans. No title, could spend a ton of money and have something super nice or just spend a little bit of money and have a really fun runner. Maybe a Rat-Jeep.”

UPDATE:  **SOLD** Was $4500

(Last listed 05/31/2009) It looks like a solid jeep.

“I am listing this Willys for my brother. It has been in our family since 1994 and been modified with a Chevy 350 engine and TH350 automatic transmission. Our uncle did most of the work on it. I’ll do my best to describe it.

350 Chevy engine from a mid 70’s Blazer. Was rebuilt about 15,000 miles ago and runs very well. Starts right up and has more than enough power.
Chrome headers exiting the sides
TH350 transmission professionally rebuilt about 1000 miles ago. Runs very well with crisp shifts.
Dana 18 transfer case.
Dana 44 rear axle and Dana 30 front with the larger drum brakes. They were rebuilt about 1000 miles ago. Our uncle bought these from a guy that was going to auto tech school and they were rebuilt under the supervision of his instructor. They are gears low. I listed a tire off the ground and spun the driveshaft. It took approximately 5-1/4 turns so they are either 5.13 or 5.38. It’s gear for offroading so if you want to do alot of highway travel you would probably want to put in a Warn overdrive.
Repainted a few years ago. It looks good but isn’t a perfect show quality paint job. The body is very solid and rust free. The fenders aren’t rotted at the inner supports.
Very good condition chrome wheels with 33″ tires with about 1000 miles on them.
Tilt steering column with Saginaw power steering conversion
Heavy duty custom battery mount.
New electric cooling fan with recored radiator.
Good condition soft top with doors. Was originally red but was repainted black with vinyl fabric paint.”

This has a variety of drivetrain updates.

“Very rare Willys Sedan Delivery. There are some sheet metal issues, but replacement panels are available. Perfect for someone with a little body shop experience. Engine is a Chev 307 V8 w/Turbo 400 automatic. Axles are from a Waggoneer providing decent road gearing vs. original Jeep low ratio. It’s a project I love, but can see it will never make it to the top of my list! More info and pics available at… http://www.ohaudio.com/TommsSD.html.”

The seller also has a FC-150, though it doesn’t appear to be for sale.

“VERY good body, and as you can see… original tailgate stenciling is still alive and well! Engine (Original) has been started but will need rings at least. A “plus” as is if you have mosquito issues. If you’re not in the mood to rebuild… A perfect engine swap is the 60 degree V-6 Chev found in tons of S-10 pick-ups and other. They’re all over the place and they fit under the “dog house” without modifications to the sheet metal.”

There looks like $250 worth of parts.

“This jeep is for parts. If you want a pristine Jeep, this one is NOT the one you need. I do not know if its all there, and the engine is probably not original. It has a 6 cylinder motor, which may be a Kaiser straight-six. Floor pan is rusted out. This jeep is old, but may be a good find if you’re looking for some parts.”

We have now run out of room in the barn for it. It runs rough. We no longer have time to finish this project.  It was started when we were not farming and now there is always farm work that needs done. Bob admitted he couldn’t remember much about the races in these photographs, other than they were shot in the mid-90s in Lisbon, Ohio; but he got some great photos.  Ok, truth be told, any photo that combines a flattie, desert dogs, and some mud is something I’d consider a great photo 🙂

And here’s a great M-170 Fire Jeep that was watching the action

Late 70s & 80s Racing in the EC4WDA

• CATEGORIES: Features, Racing • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Inspired by the playday post, I had several emails about racing on the eastern shore of the US in the EC4WDA.

HOG explained how he used to race outlaw races to make money and those would give him money to attend the EC4WDA races for fun.

He writes, “I ran the East Coast 4 Wheel Drive Association from New York to Jacksonville Fla & from Ohio to the eastern shore. I would hit the outlaw races on one weekend & race EC4WDA with the winnings from the outlaw races. I miss doing that & the good friends I had back then.

I drove a 1978 CJ-5 with a 70 AMC AMX 360 motor with T-18 tranny & dana 20 transfer case. Its name was Wind Walker. It was Bright Red & I ran NOS on her to get me out of a class that was too crowded. My ex wife ran it in Powder puffs & won more than me.”

I asked HOG what an Outlaw race was. “Outlaw races were races for anything 4×4 put on by a local group. Mostly, they were hosted by Firemen. Best of all, they paid cash prizes (The EC4WDA didn’t pay cash, instead they gave you a $10 trophy).

I did well as my Jeep looked like a stocker jeep. In fact, I drove it as a daily driver & to the races. Also, when you’d get inspected by someone that had a Chevy or Ford hat you knew he didn’t know nothing about a AMC motor as they look so much the same. My 360 was mistaken for a 304 many times, with its the stock air breather (everything was covered in mud) sitting on top of a Holley spreadbore. I even had a cassette player to play my ZZtop, & a baby seat on the rear seat. Then all I had to do was just (key word) beat the guys I ran against.”

Gerald grew up in the EC4WDA with his brother and family. He forwarded me these pics from his days racing in the EC4WDA.

Here’s a scene familiar to all race days — the morning driver’s meeting:

Gerald tells me this is the line up for the Drags. I remember flatties just like these on the west coast:

You can see the family’s racer at rest and in action in the next two shots.  If I remember correctly, the front loop from this race jeep is now in Gerald’s brother’s new build.
