UPDATE: Jim pointed out that this is a CJ-5. I was so captivated by the yellow light on the top that I made the mistake of trusting the seller on this one.

“This is what I believe to be a 1962 Willys Jeep I say believe because I am not sure of the year. I do know its a Military Willys with military spec tires. The jeep ran about five years ago but has been laying around for awhile. I’ve seen lots of pics of modified vehicles that crawl the slickrock of Southern Utah; so. it’s a nice change to see these two classic jeeps cover the trails without issue.
Randall writes, I thought maybe some other old school jeepers might like to see a few photos of a recent club outing to Moab. The jeeps did great and the scenery was absolutely awesome. The “slickrock” on “Fins&Things” and “Hell’s Revenge” trails was amazing.
The M38 is a 1952, all stock with four banger, T-90, and Dana 44 with 5:38’s. The other is a ’52 3A. Also bone stock with Dana 41. The only upgrade on it is 11″ brakes and 12v. This was our first trip, but probably won’t be our last. We went the first week of Nov. and hit great weather by luck. We’d hoped to have more jeeps make it but too many conflicts for everyone. Had a blast with just four of us in the two jeeps. They climbed just about anything a sane, middle aged man would need to climb and the gears made descents very doable with little need for much braking. HOWEVER, I was glad the brakes were in very good condition when we first went down some of the trails.
I finally got a chance to get Lost Biscuit onto the dirt today (Saturday). One of the unique aspects of Boise is that the surrounding foothills have been reserved for recreation. There are areas for hiking, walking dogs, biking, motor biking and four wheeling. One of the quickest ways to reach the foothills is to head north on 8th avenue from downtown. It takes all of 5 minutes or so to reach hiking and biking areas. It’s about 15 minutes to hit the motorized offroad areas.
My son Karson was with me. It was his first off roading experience. We were only out about an hour or so, as I’m being careful to push the bounds of the jeep slowly to let everything ‘settle’ into place.
On the positive side, the suspension is as I could have hoped. It’s firm enough for the corners, yet handles the bumps well. It’s a step up from my first suspension, which was a step up from the early jeeps I drove. We wound up the hill, took some side roads, tested out low range and four wheel drive.
On the negative side, I’ve still got a little oil that appears to be the result of valve covers that aren’t quite sealed correctly, so I’ll have to take them off to see what’s happening. Here’s some pics before we got muddy.

In this southern facing image you can see the City of Boise to the left and the entire Treasure Valley filling the background. I can’t say for sure what the pole is, other than a modern day totem of some kind?

I feel very fortunate to have received a variety of old documents, newspaper clippings, and images from the 40s and 50s courtesy of a reader named Bruce. I’ve been digging through and organizing the information. Hopefully, readers will find them useful and interesting!
For example, here’s a electronic version of a 1956 Service Bulletin that explains how the serial numbering system works on vehicles built from Willys built between 1951-1954. I’ve got roughly 30 or more old service bulletin’s I’ll be sharing for the next few months. In this case, I have posted an image of the first page below. HERE’S A LINK TO A PDF OF THE WHOLE BULLETIN.

This has a very unusual roll bar.
“This jeep is a 1946 Willys Jeep with all original body. The jeep belongs to a family member, and I am selling it for them. The last time the motor was running was about 6 years ago. There was nothing wrong with the motor then, it just sat and was never started again. The jeep has been owned by the same person for the last 20 years (since march 14, 1989). When the jeep was purchased it had new tires put on it, and was freshly painted, the same tires are still on the jeep. When it was parked 6 years ago, it was parked in a barn. There were horses in the barn that could reach part of the jeep, they nibbled on the top and one of the seats, therefore we took the top off and threw it out. The jeep sat in the barn untill 3 years ago when it was moved outside, where it sits today. The odometer reads 00220, but does not work, actual mileage is unknown….”

“1948 Willys Jeep CJ2A. The Jeep has been in dry New Mexico its entire life and is 99% rust free. The I purchased the Jeep in 1997 from an elderly gentleman here in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He owned it since 1972, and he bought it from the original owner. I have many records with some registration records dating back to 1954. It has always been garaged, and is in excellent condition. I have updated/upgraded some of the features including: new top, roll cage, am/fm cassette mounted under the dash and speakers mounted under the rear seat, 12V electrical system, 11″ brakes, 2 1/2 inch Rancho lift, CV joint custom rear driveshaft …”

You can order the body and practically every part for this Jeep through companies like Kaiser Willys. I have purchased a new grill and steering wheel along with other misc. parts. The window frame is in OK shape and will need new glass, it’s flat and will be easy to replace. All this Jeep needs is to be sand blasted painted and ready for body. I found the image below on eBay. The bidding has ended, but I”m sure it will return. I thought it looked very similar to Brian’s CJ-3B (or former CJ-3B — did you ever sell it?). After located a pic of the CJ-3B, I concluded it must have been used as the model of the drawing.
One image below is the drawing and one is a shot of the CJ-3B from the CJ-3B page (See more pics of it there — It’s a beauty!).
According to an old ebay listing, this particularly drawing is a run of 250 prints of a drawing by artist Duke Edwards. I didn’t know who Duke Edwards was, so I did a google search and found the information below from the ‘Automotive Art Gallery‘.
“Duke has been “doodling” for almost 40 years but had limited his clientele to friends and local car clubs. Since making his work available to the public, he has received international recognition and has pieces on museum display as well as in private collections. For just “doodling” Duke is amazingly talented.”

“New Aluminum CJ3A JEEP body on a new 1973 CJ5 powder coated frame. This frame allows the use of a V8 engine. Powder coated Dana 44 rear, Dana 30 front, and Dana 300 Transfer case, are geared for the new tires installed on the polished aluminum wheels. A complete new power disc brake system is still in the boxes. New parts include a new fuel cell, fuel line, wiring harness, body mounts and suspension parts. All the parts for this project cost over $17,000, not including the powder coating, windshield frame and original front grill. I don’t even want to think about how much was spent on powder coating parts. I will offer delivery within a reasonable distance. Call for a list of all the new parts included with this offer. Working tailgate with chains. 16 inch wheels with beautiful 7.50-16 agressive 10 ply tires that really make the look. Fuel and water cans on the back. Axe and shovel also. High lift jack on the front bumper. I have a complete new stock exhaust system not installed yet. Nothing really wrong with the exhaust that is on it now though….”
