1968 & 1969 DJ-5 Gala Ads & Photo

UPDATE: eBay has a rare color photographic slide depicting a DJ-5 Gala/Surrey like the one shown in the Hawaii ad at the bottom.

dj5-surrey1

===================================

Originally Published May 21, 2020: During the late 1960s, a couple different Jeep dealers in Hawaii offered DJ-5 Jeep Galas for sale. There were at least two different styles of ads published. The Gala was a Surrey that was sold by the export arm of the company.

In 1967, a Kaiser-Jeep dealership owned by Von Hamm-Young Mercantile, flew the 1968 model of the DJ-5 Gala Jeep to Hawaii. From the story below, it would seem that this may have been the first example of a DJ-5 Gala Jeep arriving in Hawaii. Note that the photo’s caption only describes this jeep as a Gala.

1967-10-19-honolulu-star-bulletin-dj5-surrey-gala-jeep-lores

Over the next two years, the dealer published ads hoping to spur sales. We’ll likely never know how successful sales were, but I’d suspect not too many were sold.

1) The first ad appeared between April and September of 1968. The example shown below was published in the May 30, 1968, issue of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. There are a variety of things that struck me with this ad. First, it’s the first ad I’ve seen for a DJ-5 Surrey/Gala. Second, it is advertised as a “Surrey Gala”, rather than one or the other. Third, it came in six different color schemes. Fourth, later in the year (specifically September 24th in the Hawaii Tribune Herald), Big Island Rambler was the dealer name at the bottom of the ad, with no specific link made to Von Hamm-Young.

Apart from all those points, it’s generally just an odd ad for a vehicle!

1968-05-30-honolulu-star-bulletin-dj5-surrey-ad-lores

2) This ad appeared multiple times, but only during April of 1969 (I could find no other ads for any other month in 1969), isn’t quite as odd as the 1968 campaign. The ad also doesn’t mention the multiple package options. This particular example was published in the April 4th, 1969, issue of the Honolulu Advertiser.

I just picked up this Viasa brochure from Egypt via eBay (along with some other 1 sheet brochures). Note that these rigs are all powered by the Perkins Diesel. I’ve dated this using the legal notice at the bottom of page three that ends in “1969”.

This front page is about 8.5″ x 11″ landscape oriented:

4 1969? Viasa Spanish Jeep Ad Sheets

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features, International This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

I could not find dates on these, but the models and designs look very similar to the 1969 brochure, so I can only guess these are from around 1969. Each of these models are similar to the M-series forward control designs.

The “Jeep” Campeardo is reflective of the M-676; just a basic forward control truck:

This “Jeep” Duplex has four doors and a small truck bed, similar to the M-677:

The “Jeep” Toledo is similar to the M-678:

This “Jeep” Furgon has few windows than the Toledo model above, sort of like the M-679:

1959 XM443E1 TPCC Brochure

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features, XM443E1-TPCC • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

The Tactical Personnel-Cargo Carrier (TPCC), also known dryly as the XM443E1, isn’t a vehicle I’ve discussed at all, mostly because I really didn’t know much about it. I figured it was just another prototype. However, given how far along in the production process this design lasted, I figured it was worth a close look.  I recently bought the four-page brochure below off of ebay, along with a press release for the TPCC, which sheds some additional information on this vehicle.

In fact, the TPCC was far enough along in development that it was featured at the 1959 Chicago Auto Show (February 1959 Jeep News):

1959-02-willys-news-tpcc-XM443E1

From the February 1959 Jeep News — 1959 Chicago Auto Show where the jeeps were all featured in white.

and later in the year at the Association of U.S. Army’s Convention.

1959-09-10-jeep-news7-tpcc-excerpt

Willys Motors even created this 4-page brochure, which was likely published in 1959 (it lacks a date). So, why didn’t Willys do more with this vehicle? According to this post, numerous maintenance issues uncovered by the military doomed the vehicle.

August 1960 Traveller Brochure

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

I bought this rare Traveller brochure off of ebay, one I’d never seen. It’s printed on a heavier than usual paper, almost card stock thick. This is the earliest example of a Traveller brochure that I’ve seen. This brochure is form number 8-9-tr-60-8-1.

This brochure starts as a 5.5″ x 8.5″ brochure. Here’s the front page. The use of “Traveller’s” plural refers to the 2WD and 4WD as separate models. A 1961 brochure used the singular Traveler and did not show the 2WD with its different styling, but a 1962 switched back to the plural Travellers.

This issue of the July 1956 four-page service and parts news introduces the Power-Lok differential upgrade, a dealer installation option. A news item on page three seems a little bit too enthusiastic about the clutch adjustments, as the article claims one in three adjustments leads to a clutch overhaul (and service profits).

This four page issue notes on page two that June 1956 was “Dent’s out of Fenders” month or, I did you not, “DOOF”!?! I don’t know what to do with that info.

Page three references what may be causing a few DJ-3A noises. One note refers to the “clutch driven disc hub”, which can cause a vibration issues between 33 and 45mph, but I’m not familiar with that part. There are a couple other solutions for particular noises listed.

May 1956 Willys Service and Parts News

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

After a few dud issues, this one has a few interesting items. Page two devotes almost half a page to Vacuum Power Brake Kits, like the kind that was installed on the DJ-3A when we bought it. This article shows that their installation was more common than I suspected.

On page four, there’s an article about the new “Fresh-Air” heater and cab ventilator and some of its advantages, along with a kit number. Also on page four, there’s an interesting article about the top bow rear brackets. First, their installation was cancelled in late 1955, but then Willys reversed that decision and added them again. So, there are some stock models made 1955 that didn’t have them.

1955ish? Postcard of Wentworth Motors in Alabama on eBay

This postcard from Wentworth motors of Alabama appears to show a CJ-5 with a PTO supporting a posthole digger. So, I *think* this is from around 1955-56, given the lack of DJs or FCs. Note the Willys Bermuda in the parking lot. This would also suggest post 1955.

1955? Hardtop Brochure on eBay

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE II: Here is a color version of the CJ-5 w/hardtop that appears in the brochure below. I found this on Flickr. One commenter there noted that, “Reinforced Plastics Corporation was in operation on Martha’s Vineyard from 1952 to 1959. They made these tops as well as other fiberglass items.”

================================

UPDATE from October 26, 2017: Here’s another one of these rare brochures for sale. Thanks to Bill Norris and Derek Redmond for the extra pics. This brochure has been for sale on the same eBay pager for four years. It’s on sale at the moment.

This unusual fiberglass hardtop was created by the Reinforced Plastics Corp.  I have yet to see one in the wild. Two journal articles (Chemical Week 1957, Volume 81 and National Defense Transportation Journal 1957, Volumes 13-14) both have announcements for the new top, pegging its inception around mid-1957. Unfortunately, Google will only provide snipped views of these University of Michigan scanned journals. The date of these journals suggests the lister of this brochure is probably wrong about the 1955 date for the brochure.

This February 1956 issue shows repair part kits for wheel cylinders. Unless I am confused, certainly nothing extraordinary, it seems the newsletter is suggesting that CJ-2A, CJ-3A, CJ-3B, CJ-5, CJ-6 and DJ-3A all used the same Wheel Cylinder kits, but actually the DJ-3A, unfortunately, is different from all those.
