David Tracy wrote a good piece of the engineering flaw(?) related to the WWII jeeps, specifically the installation of the bell crank on the axle and the problems it caused. He also does a good pointing out that there were alternatives to Willys’ steering system that were used by Bantam and Ford on their prototypes. I’m sure he would have liked an answer as to WHY Willys ended up using the system it did, but he doesn’t draw any conclusions.

A 1952 article in the Toledo Blade shared the news that King Farouk had purchased 12 specially-built jeeps with red leather seats, white metal wheels, and other unique features.
Unfortunately, I cannot locate any photos for these 12 jeeps. I was able to find find this photo that shows Faourk riding in what appears to be a 1946ish CJ-2A.

This is a photo of Mary Tom O’Neil’s dad, circa 1942. He passed away in 1999. She lives in the Atlanta area. I had a great day with them and some other TWA people in the ’90s at Rheinbeck Airdrome, NY. Great WW2 stories!! The note and book page are self explanatory.

I wonder just how many versions of this press photo are out there?

This photo makes it clear that the US was aware of the use of Chinese as “Comfort Women” early on in the war.

A Camp Carson scouting party on Christmas reconnaissance, tracked down Santa Claus, bouncing along a mountain trail using a jeep instead of good, old “Bunder,” “Blitzen,” and the rest of his traditional outfit. He told the soldiers that he was taking his new rig on a “shakedown cruise” and fount it would do the job very well. Santa forecasted a big Christmas for everybody—especially the boys at Camp Carson. A women-owned restoration shop called Lost Legends in Weare, New Hampshire, recently completed a restoration of a wagon. I could only find a photo from the front, but it looks like they did a beautiful job! Learn more here:

“This is an original press photo. An interesting method of fording an unformable stream is demonstrated in these picture by the men of the Fourth Division motorized at Upatoi Creek near Fort Benning. The quarter ton reconnaissance carps “jeeps” are literally floated across the stream as shown here. At the top, the jeep is backed onto a square of canvas, part of which rests on the surface of the water. The canvas is then pulled up and tied just as you would wrap a package and the jeep is tied up in canvas, which also contains water, then the machine, which weighs slightly more than one ton empty, then displaces enough water to float. It is then pushed across the stream and is ready for another go at the enemy. Photo measures 8 x 10.25 inches. Photo is dated 7-15-1941.”

The “A1”, a CJ-3B Fire Jeep, served as Elko airport’s first fire truck. Still in good shape, it was recently put to use for the “fill the boot” Muscular Distrophy campaign.
This video demonstrates how many different types of vehicles were participating. At several points you’ll see a rare siting of an Austin Champ going offroad. Note also the nearly brand-new looking Tux Park. Great stuff!
I’m not sure how the reporter knew the sign was erected by New Zealanders?

New Zealanders, who probably got their information from a close contest with Nazi Bullets, erected his sign which temporarily halts an American Jeep on famed Highway “6” which leads to Rome. “Achtung” is the German word for “attention” and the warning it headlines is situated a few miles from where the Rapido River crosses the highway south of Cassino. (06/19/2017) The Jeepney doesn’t run. The oil filter mount isn’t a triangle nor is it a circle. It’s an oval. What’s that from? It also has an interesting dash, too.

In this episode, the folks at Dirt Every Day took two broken jeeps, a wagon and a YJ, and made one running jeep.
This jeep includes a trailer on rails.
