Hot Rod or Drag Jeep from Cali

Buz spotted this flatfender online from the 2012 Good Guys Del Mar car show.  I’m not sure if this is a drag or just a hot rod jeep.

1948 Jeepster Brunswick, Oh eBay

• CATEGORIES: Jeep Rods, Jeepster • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This looks like a great summer cruiser.

“2 Door Convertible Roadster Phaeton Jeepster.
This is an “ALL STEEL” vehicle. No fiberglass or body filler. It is also a “Rust Free” vehicle with no body or floor panel repairs/replacements. The custom body work and paint job was professionally done in California before the current owner purchased the vehicle. Most likely around 8-10 years ago. The paint is holding up very well. There are no problems with chipping, cracking, fading, checking, fish eyes or orange peel. True show quality paint job. This all steel two door/convertible body is fairly stock. There are a few unique modifications that were done to the original body. The stock flat front ’48 hood and grille were replaced with more desirable, better looking ’50 setup. The hood then had “Louvers” cut into it. A custom front splash shield was also fabricated. The front turn signals lights where relocated into the grille area to help keep the front end clean looking. The rear portion of the vehicle received custom tail lights that were set and fitted into the body. The rear wheel fender skirts were welded in place. (Again, all steel body work.) It has smooth body lines with the front and rear bumpers removed. The two-tone color scheme was influenced by the gorgeous 1950’s Ford vehicles which use these colors. The ’57 peach color is called “Sunset Coral”. With a color as nice as this, A nickname was given to the vehicle. “Just Peachy” which is hand painted on the rear. The side metallic candy stripes are also outlined with a hand painted pin stripe which really makes the whole vehicle stand out. (much more about this on eBay)

1959 Wagon Rio Rancho, NM **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: Jeep Rods, Racing, Willys Wagons • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $19,950.

“I have an absolutely awesome 59 Willys Wagon Pro Street. It has a professionally built full square tube chassis and a Mustang 2 front end with rack and pinion steering. The 14 point cage was certified for 8.80s about 16 years ago. This was a drag car converted to a 9.0 second pro street car. It has a full roller, blown small block 400 punched to a 406 with an 8 quart oil pan, MSD ignition, E curve distributor and Wiend 671 Blower . Included are two 750 demon blower carbs and Dart 230 pro heads. Has NOS (never hooked up, never tried). The trans is a built Turbo 350 with a 3500 stall converter. Also has a 15 gallon fuel cell, wheelie bars and fan cooled oil and trans oil coolers under the rear. Dana 60 with 4.10s and detroit locker. Engine and trans have about 700 miles on them.

Wheels and Tires: Front and rear wheels are draglites. Rear tires are Mickey Thompson 33×19.5×15 Sportsman Pros. Front tires – Front Runners

HP? How does 650-750 sound?!?! And that’s without the 250 shot of nitrous! Can you say better than sex?!?!?

So let’s talk about what all of the above would cost. Buying the vehicle before engine and other grades – $30,000 with full square tube chassis, rack and pinion, etc. The engine alone would cost approximately $22,000 (with blower, etc.) NOS $1,000. Turbo 350 trans with stall converter another $1,500. Oil and Trans oil coolers $1,000. So all in – to build it yourself (AND THAT’S IF YOU COULD FIND ONE!) would cost you $55,000+!!!!!”

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $2200

(11/22/2010) This looks like a worth project for the price (it doesn’t sound like there’s much to do)

“I got this on a trade I had visions of making a finished hot rod with it but I just dont have the time anymore. Its mounted and channeled over a S-10 frame with the 4.3 liter engine still in it. The engine still runs but there is no gas tank installed. There is a pretty fair amount of metal fab left, but if you have the skills needed for this project it would make a cool ride. There is minimal rust left on the body. The old floor was rotted out and a new floor put in by the previous owner. I have some more pics if needed. This is located in Broadhead WI which is about 1/2 hour west of Beloit , WI. I live in Sycamore, IL so anyone wanting to see will need to make arrangement with me to look at it.”

• CATEGORIES: Jeep Rods, Willys Wagons • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE:  **SOLD** Was $5500.

(01/13/2012) This looks good.

“Cool street machine!!!!!!!!!! Highly sought after “parkway conversion” special ordered from Willys Overland by U.S. Postal Service, U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. Forest Service and other goverment agencies in very limited numbers. These examples combined the poplar wagon looks and high visibility with increased access to rear cargo area by retaining the ” barn style” rear doors of the panel delivery. Very limited and highly sought after combination! She’s powered by a 351cu.in. windsor motor with street compition cam, edelbrock performer intake with holley 650 double pumper carb. She breaths thru 302 mustang headers into 2&1/2 inch exhaust piping with flowmaster dual chamber mufflers. The front has been clipped with a monte carlo frame member….. sway bars, disc brakes, and power steering. Rear has stock willys leafs. 8.8 inch differential with 4.11 gears and rear sway bars and lakewood traction bars. Body is clean, straight, older but descent paint, custom louvers in hood and front valance, and a moon roof! She has a T10 four speed with a strong and tight clutch. Interior is clean with Z28 bucket seats grey carpet and brushed aluminum dash plating with custom guages: fuel, temp, tach, speedo, vaccuum, voltmeter all functioning. Clairion C/D player into 6 speakers. Original wood slatting in cargo area. This Willys drives well and steering is very tight— no wandering or pulling, one finger at highway speed. The is some bubbling on paint from my living at the beach but no major rust! Boby is very solid for being over 60 years old! Feel free to call with any questions, (my preference) any time.”

1948 Jeepster-rod Show Low, Az **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: Jeep Rods, Jeepster, Unusual This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was Make Offer

It sounds like a really unique project, but it is still a project.

“You have to see this in person – photos don’t do it…Photos are as it came out of the paint shop…

You’re driving this down the street – it grabs the attention of EVERY single person it slips by…this is a customized 1948 Willys Overland open top roadster sitting on a custommade 2×3 mild steel box frame, built by a winning race car engineer to accommodate all the acroutrements of a donor car, a Nixxan 300ZX drive train, wiring harness, digital dash, accessories, and electronics.
I have nearly everything to complete this project (black interior fabrics, interior panels ready to cover, console, mirrors, power seats, etc etc etc). Low, and compact (only 13 feet long!) and light. Should do 150-160 mph (donor car was capable of that) and was designed to corner like an IROC Z car according to the chassis designer (rack and pinion steering, coilover shocks all around, 100% adjustable suspension, urethane bushings used throughout). Good looking 3.0 litre V-6, (looks like v-8) injected and turbocharged (225 hp, 195 ft lbs of torque – only 19,000 miles on the donor vehicle). Includes entire wiring harness, digital dash, factory stereo system with subwoofer amp and 12 speakers, most everything I can think of with the exception of driveshaft (I have the original with u-joints – just needs tube)
5 speed trans, power assist disc brakes and steering,ARE wheels, tongue and groove oak for rear bed, etc etc etc. Way too many features to list…this was a very high tech donor car).

This project is about 70-75% complete – the tough stuff is done, and everything that has been done thus far has been done right. The body is nearly flawless and has NO BONDO – all steel, and smooth as a baby’s butt over the entire car. New Corvette yellow…Nothing like it ANYWHERE ON EARTH…My 20 year effort is your gain.”

1948 Wagon Hopewell, NJ **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: Jeep Rods, Unusual, Willys Wagons • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay.

There are some interesting detail changes (lights front and back) in particular.  There may be a little work yet based on the seller’s notes.

1948 Willys, was sitting in a barn 1970-1996.  I purchased it in 1998, frame-off restoration and body stripped, put on the road in 2003.  Never missed a beat, very reliable, has never let me down in 8 years and 5000 miles.  I am a Mechanical Engineer, been building and restoring US and German cars since 1978.  I am not a pro, but I was working for a German company when I built this car, and I always imagined one of the German Engineers was sitting over my shoulder when I was building it, criticizing everything I was doing, so mechanically it is done to a high level.

DRIVETRAIN: Mid-80’s CORVETTE 350 with Corvette Aluminum heads.  Engine is set 8” back into firewall, so crank pulley is centered over front axle centerline for best weight distribution.  I believe the engine was re-honed at one time (pulled pan and had a look), so perhaps it is bored?  Demon 650cfm Carb and Edelbrock intake, universal street rod headers ceramic coated with true dual exhaust with crossover.  Aluminum waterpump.  Aftermarket distributor.  New valve lifters and timing chain.  Turbo 350, rebuilt when truck was built.  Lokar shifter.  Griffin aluminum radiator, Ford Taurus Police electric fan (with low/high speed fan).  Shaved firewall.  Holley electric fuel pump mounted at tank, oil pressure safety switch on pump, plus large fuel filter.  Runs good, although a bit sputtery until off the choke.

SUSPENSION:  Heidt’s  MUSTANG II FRONT end with tubular A-arms, vented rotors, large anti-roll bar (kit cost $2000).  Rear end Ford 8.8” 3.23 posi with finned aluminum cover, vented disk brakes, adjustable coilovers with second set of shocks, T-bird anti-roll bar.  Adjustable balance valve for front/rear brake bias.  Functioning parking brake.  Power Rack and pinion steering.  Hydro Boost (not vacuum) power brakes make this wagon stop like a Porsche.  Power Steering cooler.  16” American Racing wheels.  Good front tires, older rear tires (245’s).  Spare tire on Mustang 16″ alloy.  Handles well, tracks straight, not so happy on very bumpy roads (low rider).

INTERIOR:  Dash completely re-done.  Pod in front of driver holds AutoMeter “Phantom” (white background) gages as follows:  Tach, Speedo, Voltmeter, Oil Pressure, Vacuum, Fuel. Water Temp.  Indicator lights for turn signal and high beams.  GM tilt steering column.  AM/FM cassette in overhead console.  Center console with power window switches for side windows.  Custom trans cover.  Volkswagen Rabbit wiper motor (electric 2 speed).  Heat insulation padding in firewall, trans cover, under seat platform.  Dash lights flicker on/off occasionally.  2 front seats, no rear seats.

Windows behind doors, formerly 2 piece sliding windows, are now 1 piece power up-down, very slick.  Small humps in rear floor for coilovers and differential clearance.  Interior is semi-complete, but really needs to be gone over and re-done.  Has 3-point seatbelts.

Willys is sold AS-IS, no guarantees.  I built it, I drove it 30 miles on August 26th, and I know it works well and is reliable, but it is not a Honda or a 2011 car so you may need to fix some things.”
