Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. So, you have an extra $100,000 and 3000 hours. What do you with yourself? Randy Grubb decided he’d build a Hot Rod out of a long haul truck. Popular Science magazine highlights Randy’s efforts. Though it has nothing to do with jeeps, I thought it was worth mentioning.
What I really liked was the before and after pics. In the before pic, you can see how he arranged the parts so he could visualize what he was building. Any of us who have done projects like this where there aren’t specific instructions/directions can relate. I can’t tell you how many times I put on and took off the jeep body to make sure it fit in the right spot, not too far forward, not too far back, not to high, was it straight — then stand back and ponder and take a few pics and adjust and ponder …. details, details, details. It’s all part of the fun :-).
Despite it’s fun design, this wasn’t just some show vehicle. When Randy was finished, he drag raced it at 100 mph. Now that’s a HOT Rod!

Here’s a fun Jeepster.
“1950 Willys Jeepster, title is a 46. This is a quick little car, that runs great, steers and stops like it should. No frills just a cool little drop top driver. I bought it as a basket case and replaced or rebuilt pretty much the entire car. This car is made to drive, no bull, just you the road and a V8 growl out the back from three inch pipes. You can spend time driving or waxing, if you’re a waxer car show guy, this is not your kind of car. I completed the car three years ago and it is 100% dependable.
DRIVE TRAIN
350 small block Chevy bored .060 over, nice Summit cam train with alloy roller rockers, big 2.02 valve heads with three angle valve job done by local NAPA shop, Offenhourser intake and Edelbrock carb, HEI, vintage Offenhourser valve covers, aluminum pump and large core aluminum radiator, one wire alternator, mini starter, block-hugger headers dump into custom. 2 ½” exhaust back to 3” out the rear. Borg Warner 5 speed trans with 11” hydraulic clutch and S10 Blazer rear end.
SUSPENSION and BRAKES
Power front disc with drum rear, all brake components are new, to include all lines, Rack and pinion steering with modified Willys column, new tires and chrome wheels.
BODY & INTERIOR
New top, including wood bows, new side curtains, new upholstery, custom engine turned stainless instrument panel with new gauges and switches, new wiring harness, custom welded in floor pans, four seat belts.

New heavy duty rear drive shaft. 1965 327 Chevy small block 30 over alluminum edelbrock rpm heads 11.1 compression ratio. Forged crank, 6 ” rods, custom ground Howard’s cam solid flat tappet, balanced, blue printed, and dynoed. Weind tunnel ram with 2 carter AFB carbs. Full mallory ignition. Rack and pinion steering. (03/17/2010) If you are gonna build a jeep rod, go all the way. This builder went farther than that. How about the hood ornament or the cutout star on the hood. Pretty unusual!

“i have decided to sell my rat rod project.its a 54 willys with 2 1/2 ton izuzu box truck axles.it has the stock frame modified.toyota 4×4 steering box and tilt colum,1972 running 350 motor,1972 turbo 350 trans,around a 373 8000 lb rear end,the truck needs finished.im losing interest in it.it has the removible roof cap to run topless if you want to.needs ,front end finished,wiring,brakes,drivshaft,fuel lines,and glass and also needs a bed but mite have one soon to go with it it is low and long.i will trade this for a chevy muscle car pre 72 or a cool old school chevy truck pre 72 or ?.the more work i do the more the price will go up.im just trying to recoupe some of my money.call 541-660-2202 or email for more info or pics.”

This seems a bit pricey given the condition of the project.
“1950 willy’s truck cab that is chopped with custom built box frame. Speed way drop front axle kit. Rear semi elliptical springs and original willys axle. Needs steering set up has reverse corvair mount and steering link. May consider trade for Amc car or jeep wagoneer, fox body, some ford or a built sbchevy engine. Want to get something equal value.
