Wrecker from Jack Tipple Motors

• CATEGORIES: Features, Fire/Police/Industry Vehicles, Old Images • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: Paul Barry shared some photos of the truck shown below. The hamilton toy wrecker is cute.

Paul wrote, I kept asking about the tow truck. I guess the owners got tired of me asking and said if I wanted the tow truck I had to buy all the Willys stuff left over from the dealership. Shucks!

The story behind the truck is it was ordered from Toledo with a Canfield wrecker and was delivered in 1955 along with a new CJ-5. The truck arrived in red primer, as it was to be painted the yellow and blue AAA colors, the business was a AAA station since 1927. The pair of jeeps arrived very late at night and as was the custom the transport just dropped them off in front of the store. When morning came, only the CJ-5 was there, no tow truck to be found. I suppose phone calls were made and the truck was supposed to be right in front. Someone came into the station later that morning and said they saw a tow truck stuck in the riverbed back at the crossroads. So they took the old wrecker and recovered the new one In the Eel River (ed note Ferndale is just south of the Eel River). The local hooligans stole the truck and since it was delivered with only a couple gallons of fuel, ran out of gas while “wheeling” it.

A Ferndale Willys dealer originally used this truck wrecker to tow disabled vehicles. He also used it as a customer demonstration vehicle.

This is a rough project.

“THIS IS A VERY EARLY PRODUCTION WILLYS MB. IT HAS SLAT GRILL AND REAR WILLYS SCRIPT. THE VIN IS I02095.
THIS CAME FROM A FARMERS FIELD WHERE IT HAS BEEN SITTING SINCE THE 1950’S. THE JEEP FLOOR BOARD IS VERY RUSTY BUT THE REAR IS PRETTY GOOD. THE MOTOR WAS COVERED AND HAS OIL IN IT. TRANSMISSION AND TRANSFER CASE ARE STILL IN THE JEEP. THIS WOULD BE AN EXCELLENT WILLYS TO RESTORE GIVEN IT IS SUCH AN EARLY PRODUCTION. PLEASE SEE ALL THE PICTURES WHICH INCLUDE A LOT OF PARTS. NO TITLE. WILL PROVIDE BILL OF SALE.”

A rare Willys Cargo-Personnel Carrier is about to undergo a restoration by the Ione Parlor of the Native Sons of the Golden West. This one is in pretty rough shape and sports the 6-226 Hurricane Motor. However, the running gear had already been gone through.

Information and specs beyond the brochure are difficult to find. Even good photos of them are rare. If anyone has any additional information on these, email Robert at buckydodle@yahoo.com.

“This is a hybrid Willys CJ2A body and chassis, with an MB front end, with correct military accessories, and correct WWII Olive Drab green paint, made to match that of the WWII Willy’s MB. Ready to drive. It cold starts first try every time, runs smooth and drives straight. Converted to 12 Volt system. 4 wheel drive is fully operational. 8,000 miles on original 4 cylinder L head Go-Devil engine. 3 speed – T-90 Transmission. 5 brand new military style tires. Always garaged. The body has been restored, minor rust on frame. Includes PTO winch on front end, which is operational but does not have a cable. Comes with authentic soft top from a Ford GPW. Locations of choke and throttle do not match that of an MB, but can be moved to correct locations. “1947 Jeep Willys CJ2-A project or parts for sale ($2500 OBO). I have most everything but the body. I started this project over 10 years ago and time/space/money just haven’t been on my side. The body was trashed when I got it and has unfortunately been disposed of. I have the windshield frame, tailgate and front seat frames. I have the motor and transmission and all of the drive-train. I have a new front left axle shaft, 4 brand new tires and tubes, 4 original rims and a couple of mis-matched spares (most have been sand-blasted), a nearly complete bearing kit and many other components needed for the rebuild. I do own the original “Jeep” stamped hood, but I do not have it at my location. I am unsure if I ever had the title, but I will scour all of my records for it. I am very sad to give this up, but it is time.”
