Rick and I kneeling in front of men from Medford’s Firestation #4. They represent just some of the people who refurbished Rick’s CJ-2A.
We began the day with a quick trip over to the North Coast Co-op for some fresh bread, duck eggs (had to get 2 dozen), and some lunch items for a picnic at Redwood National Park. The co-op proved to be my favorite part of Eureka 🙂
Even better, there was a place that speaks “Jeep” across the street!
The clouds and rain promised by the weather experts on Monday never appeared. Instead, we were blessed with perfect weather for our drive up the remainder of the California Coast. Blue sky and a few clouds became a beautiful contrast to the tall, deep green forests we encountered.
Monday’s trip from Eureka, CA, to Rogue River, OR
During our drive we decided to stop at Trinidad. Dan had mentioned it in one of his comments. It turned out to have a high beach cliff with a beautiful view.
After Trinidad I expected to encounter a welcome sign for Redwood National Park. As we waited for the sign we were surprised to see a place called Trees of Mystery. Out front of the place was an enormous Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox.
Yep, that’s me leaning against babe’s leg.
After Trees of Mystery we continued searching for the welcome sign for Redwood National Park, but never saw it. It wasn’t until we reached Crescent City that I realized we must have driven through the park. Thus my plans for a picnic in the National Park was thwarted by signage, or lack thereof.
This looks a lot like a Triang, but it has two seats. I couldn’t find another example of this style.

“54 willys in good cond. Built 350 motor with mild cam runs strong. Dana 25 front end, 44 rear end. Saginaw 4 speed tranny. Warrin overdrive. Less than 5000 miles on it. Just rebuilt carb. Replaced and cleand fuel lines, new fuel pump. New master brake cylinder. Complete soft top in great condition. Tires have lots of tread but sidewalls have a lot of cracking. Clean title, registered through Feb. 2015. No Smog needed. Asking $5500 OBO.”

“this is the deal. this is my 1948 willys jeep cj2a. about 4 years ago i completed a ground up restoration, it is not a show vehicle(however i do take it to shows), not entirely original. i built this thing to drive, not to go wheeling. i rebuilt the l134 motor last year, the t90 transmission shifts smooth, i added an overdrive to the transfer case(works like split shifting). its a joy to drive. i just recently drove it to wildwood (a 100 mile round trip) without any issues. it currently has 4500 miles on it. i love it, i take it camping, move trailers around the yard via the front receiver hitch, drive it to work several times a month. it gets 14-16 mpg so its affordable to drive on a regular basis. top speed is now 55mph cruising at 45-50 in overdrive is where it is happiest. I’m not exactly wanting to sell it, I’m looking for more of a trade maybe with some cash.
I’m looking to build a flatbed/stakebody compact pickup with a diesel w/manual trans ext. capable of hauling a load when needed and carry some passengers and be relatively efficient while doing so. however, i am looking for a good candidate thats in good condition. preferably a toyota tacoma or pre tacoma double cab maybe a ranger, j10 jeep pickup. this is something i always wanted to do and i feel that i thoroughly enjoyed my time with my 48 willys. it just may be time for her to go. send me and email with what you have to offer along with its condition, or any questions you may have.”

This jeep is 68 years old, has normal rust in front floor pans and the support H brackets have rust. Again average for this jeep. It is not a rust bucket. Now back to my ad.
Here is a really sweet example of Willys with a little attitude. First off this is a 1946 Willys CJ2A that has a Chevy 327 V8 with a EdleBrock 4 barrel intake and Quadra Jet 4 barrel carb, Its fun to drive. The drivetrain was updated from a 1971 CJ5. Transmission, transfer case, front and rear axles are:
Dana 27a front with 4:89 gear ratio
Dana 44 flanged 30 spine axle with 4:89 gear ratio
T14 3 speed transmission
Large hole single lever Dana 20 transfer case, and a Warn overdrive.
Needs: power valve sticks, carb need rebuilt or replace the power valve, needs new master cylinder (I have a new brake master cyliner in the box). Tires are are old but in good shape.
I have a one piece tie rod kit and a dual reservoir brake master cylinder that I planned on updating. I would through that in if wanted.”
It’s got potential.

– The motor, tranny, and clutch have less then 200 miles (according to the previous owner). It runs like a sewing machine. New alternator, carb, etc
– Body was removed, sand blasted, primered, and painted Olive Drab. I intended to paint it like a old military vehicle.
Runs and drives great. Four wheel drive works. Yes I have the windshield, headlights, gauges, and other misc items. They were all removed for painting, and pictures were taken before being put on.

Beautiful drive over highway 299.
Well, it’s been an interesting day. My day started at 12:01am. I hadn’t been to sleep yet due to the crying of two kids in the motel room next door. Well, not just next door, but through the two doors that would have created a suite, doors so thin and porous that whatever food was being cooked in their room late at night wafted into ours. They weren’t good cooks.
The cries came and went for the next hour. Finally, at 1am, I woke up the proprietor of the not-so-fine establishment to complain. I figured if I was going to be awake, he was going to be awake. He wasn’t happy that I woke him. I wasn’t happy either. He agreed to call them. Amazingly, that seemed to help, at least for about fifteen minutes, though I can’t imagine he got on the phone with the two young children and explained the problem. I stopped caring about 1:30am when I fell asleep.
Our Sunday drive from Red Bluff to Eureka.
In the morning we awoke and got the heck out of there. So much for that deal!
We drove up to Redding and then headed west over several ranges, which appear to constitute part of the North Coastal Range. We spent three hours driving through some beautiful country along lots of two lane highway.
At one point we pulled into the lumber town of Weaverville. In the driveway of the Weaverville Garage was a VEC CJ-2A that needed some work.

“Here’s a one-of-a-kind Willys at Kool April Nites entry. The show ended today, but I thought I’d share these interesting photos. It’s a ’58 Willys Pickup re-powered with a Maserati Quattroporte V8.
All kinds of cars and trucks attend this event. Vintage celebrities such as Mike Love, of the Beach Boys, try to blend in as an every day car enthusiast. My buddy recognized him when they talked about his ’69 Berger Camaro for sale in the Car Corral today. Mike Love is an original hot-rodder from the days of the first muscle car, such as a ’61 Chevy with a 409 V8. There are also many pioneer hot-rodders and their latest creations.
Of course, there are some factory correct Willys vehicles that come out to enjoy the spring weather in Redding, too. I just thought I’d share this very original creation with you, as I was shocked at to see this unique combination of engine/body style.”
