Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. In 1943, WWII conscientious objector and artist American DeWitt Peters chose to go to Haiti to teach English. After a year, he wrote to the Haiti’s Ministry of Education and suggested he could do more for Haiti by establishing a school of painting. Using some of his own money, along with US State Department and Haitian funds, he helped launch the LE CENTRE D’ART. The goal of the center was to encourage the development of Haiti artists and folk art.
Image is from Life Magazine circa 1947. This looks different from the other photos. It is possible the jeep was repainted regularly.
To help advertise the Center’s work, Dewitt Peters used his jeep as a rolling mural. As you can imagine, this color jeep must have been quite a sight motoring around Port-au-Prince. Dewitt also used the jeep to deliver art supplies to rural painters. The video below from the United States Information Service shows his jeep from timestamps 5:17 to about 8:00. Too bad it isn’t in color.

Many publications credit DeWitt for launching a renaissance in Haitian folk art, however some historians question his overall impact. However, one thing he might have launched is the Tap Tap Buses and Taxis, whose outsides are highly colorful and continue to shuffle riders to this day. Unfortunately, the Centre’ d’Art’s building was completely demolished in the Haitiian Earthquake.

Here’s a different version of a menu that was also used at the Benjamin Franklin Hotel.
“Menu – The Benjamin Franklin Hotel, Garden Terrace, Philadelphia, PA. August 19, 1944. Cover of the menu is “Bridging a new Guinea River”, painted by James Sessions for Willys-Overland Motors, Builders of the Mighty “Jeep”. VG+ condition. A little corner or edge wear, corner crease at upper right, a few small check marks inside. I use a poor/fair/good/very good/excellent/mint grading system and grade very conservatively (see my feedback). This does NOT necessarily correspond to the generic Ebay grading system that we are forced to use. Shipping is $2.50 in the U.S.”

I think this same jeep was for sale back in 2012. The only difference that I see is the lack of MVPA text on the driver’s side.

“This is a very nice FC 150, runs and drives, I drove it in a 4th of July parade this past summer. The Jeep is all original, inside and out, this paint job is 25 plus years old, still looks good. Has been stored inside ever since then, only driven once in a while. I bought it two years ago from an estate when the owner passed away, it is a really cute old truck, but I have too many vehicles to maintain and store inside. The frame is solid, but has surface rust that needs to be sandblasted and repainted. The body is very solid, a few places on the rear fenders where the paint has peeled and there is a small surface rust patch. There are some rust holes in the body panels under the fenders along the frame rails, but these are easily fixed. It is not a show car, but could easily be restored to show condition or simply keep it and enjoy it like it is right now. 4WD works, drives straight, the engine smokes a little when it is started after sitting for a while, heater motor neesd replacing. I had to replace one brake line and cylinder when I bought it in order to drive it, the brakes all work now, we bled the lines, but could use a good pressure bleed, they still feel a little soft. I do have a reserve on this, but it is reasonable for an rare old Jeep. We can deliver if needed, however delivery costs are not included with the sale and no delivery will be made until full payment has been received. Enjoy bidding!”

A nice solid completed 1946 cj-2a with a fresh professionally rebuilt dauntless Buick v 6, trany and transfer case, and it has power steering. Makes it extra easy to drive with plenty of power. Been my fun daily driver past couple years. Put a plow on it and it would make a awesome plow jeep also with lots of extra power

“This is a prime example of a WWII army jeep – a 1943 Willys MB that has been FULLY RESTORED. NO EXPENSE has been spared in restoring this wonderful piece of WWII history. I have owned this Jeep for three years and have over 15K in restoration. I also repainted it the CORRECT Gillespie Coatings AJP paint, which is correct for all MB/GPWs prior to late 1944.
All original but it does have a Bessinger replacement body. Engine, drive train, all restored and rebuilt. It has 5 combat wheels, new Firestone military NDT tires, grease gun, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, windshield-mounted rifle rack, new canvas coverings for the seats and new canvas top, etc…I also converted it to a 12 volt system for safety, but modified an old 6 volt voltage regulator box to cover the 12 volt solenoid. Only someone with a trained eye could spot the upgrade. It has the original oil bath air cleaner, correct fuel/water separator and oil filter.
Interior–all gauges work, floor push starter, blackout light switch, handbrake, brass fire extinguisher, combat steering wheel, & kidney pad. It also has the grease gun, mounting bracket, and maintenance record mounted under the hood. It has the original tire pump under the back seat, too.
I also have SEVERAL WWII musette bag, wooden ammo boxes, a WWII field phone, two original WWII M1 helmets, and a wood/metal REPLICA .30 Thompson sub machine gun. Anyone who is interested in WWII reenacting, parades, etc., will have EVERYTHING they need to jump right in. Oh, I also have a 101st Airborne XL WWII Jump Uniform (replica).”

This might be worth a look. The seller lists this as a 1951, but these weren’t made until 1953.

The seller notes this is the “Go-Devil” motor, but obviously it’s the Hurricane F-head.
“Thank you for looking at this 1953 Jeep Willy’s. This Jeep is in good condition and runs really well too! It is a 4 cylinder, 3 speed transmission. The Willy’s has no rust holes in it and no major dents or scratches. Somewhere along the line it has been really taken care of. The motor has 2,000 miles on the crate engine (it is the “Go Devil” motor) and the tranny was built not long ago.
I have not had this long, but this is what I know about it! Come drive it and experience old history fun!”
