1945 GPW Chatham, NJ eBay

• CATEGORIES: GPW (Ford MB) • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This has a MB block with a GPW head.  It has no title.

“Take a look at this beautiful 1945 Ford GPW, serial number 247613, date of delivery January 1945. This jeep has undergone a frame off restoration and is perfect for parades, re-inactors, and collectors. This started out as a hunting camp jeep rescued from a camp in Gettysburg Pennsylvania two years ago.

It underwent a frame off restoration done by me over the past several months. I have owned over 24 jeeps and have restored about 17 of them, several MB’s, GPW’s and CJ’s have sold successfully on e-Bay.

The frame was in good shape but needed new front frame horns. It had the wrong body on it and the previous owner put in a civilian flat head L-head engine. The body and that engine were removed and a professionally rebuilt MB engine with a GPW head was put into this jeep as well as a new reproduction DL Bensinger Body.

Everything has been gone through on this jeep and everything has been cleaned, repainted, or replaced with new, NOS, or repro parts.

Chassis and Drive Train: All original GPW drive train except the engine block. Tranny, transfer case, axles, leaf springs front and rear – original F-marked GPW. New/rebuilt shackles, new shocks, new axle bumpers, frame stripped and sand blasted repaired front frame horns including gussets, and bumper – the frame horns repaired/welded to repair some 60 years of wear and tear.

Drive train has new u-joints, new clutch, pressure plate, and throw-out bearing, new seals and bearings on tranny and transfer case which were drained and cleaned repainted, and all fluids and gaskets replaced, rebuilt band type e-brake new hardware and band, and cable, new engine/tranny mounts, new brakes including all lines and hoses, new master cylinder, four new wheel cylinders. Rebuilt steering box and drag link with original re-painted steering wheel. New rear bumperettes, original F-marked pintle hook. 4 new 6×16 6 Ply NDT tires on excellent blasted and repainted combat rims. Spare is a few years older NDT on excellent combat rim.

Engine: An original MB engine that was rebuilt by PROMAR engine rebuilders was put into this jeep. Professionally rebuilt W-O carburetor, new fuel pump, rebuilt manifolds and new gaskets, new 12 volt alternator, new coil, new wiring, new battery, new hoses, new belts, new 180 degree t-stat, new temp. gauge, new ammeter, new fuel gauge and sender, new fuel lines, new plugs and wires. Professionally repaired radiator and new cap.

Body: Bensinger MD Juan GPW body kit; new tub, fenders, grille, windshield including new glass, hood, seats, new fuel tank, new top bows, brackets and hardware, new canvas seats and top (Canvas is Beachwood Canvas), repro. shovel and axe, original 1945 dated gas can, repro. water bucket, rebuilt authentic blackout lights, new headlights and tail-lights, repro data plates.

Misc: All new modern electric, all cloth covered wires, all new gauges, all lights, all new switches work properly. Wiring harness and switches modified to work for regular driving and parades and re-inacting – not for 1940’s war conditions.

Vehicle does not have a title. Mileage is not accurate, new speedometer.”

1942 GPW plus 1963 Trailer Orange County, CA **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: News This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $8500.

This GPW will need some work.  More pics on the ad.

“First registered in 1948 when auctioned by the D.O.D.and according to the VIN number, this Light Utility Vehicle is believed to be a 1942 WWII production Ford GPW “Jeep”.;Visit this web site for more information on the Ford GPW Jeep…http://www.kaiserwillys.com/about_willys_jeep_mb_history_specs. As can be seen in the pictures, this was a project started many years ago before the value as an historic vehicle was given consideration. The body has some Bondo here and there, but you’ll be hard pressed to find any rust or any damage to the body or frame. Unlike alot of other WWII Vehicles out there, with a moderate amount of effort, this particular WWII vehicle can be restored fairly easy. The engine and drive train are original to this chassis and have been reconditioned/rebuild and the only modifications are the Alternator, Air Cleaner and Oil Filter (All 3 original units come as spares). The only other mods are the front seats with the originals in the back, the gas tank, which is not connected, the front brakes are now disc type, the currently mounted steering wheel is a CalCustom unit, but the original steering wheel is also included. NEW Side Curtains and Top with bBows included and comes with a later 1963 Utility Trailer. Clean un-dated and signed title to both vehicles. The owner has passed away and I’m advertising the Jeep for the family located in Walnut, California who has Power of Attorney for any other legal docs you may desire. It is strongly believed the vehicle is drivable but you will have to bring tools, battery and gas to make sure, otherwise SOLD AS IS. Buyer must also arrange pick-up in Walnut, California. The family would also like the prospective buyers to understand that it is a hassle to accept a deposit, cancel this ad and then not have the sale go through, so please understand that the two vehicles are subject to 1st come, 1st served. That said, and after all is said and done, I can add that hopefully a little dickering between parties will make this a pleasant transaction; Feel free to contact me with questions.”

there appears to be some value in parts.

“Last chance on this old Jeep FC150 before it heads to the scrap yard, this is a BIG project that I have been holding onto for sometime now but I’m parting ways with the old jeep habit and cleaning up shop. NO TITLE, does not run but motor is not locked up, tires hold air and it does roll fairly easily to load onto a trailer. Major rust issues between the body and the roof line, no rear window. This has a hydraulic dump bed on it but have never tested the pump but the bed does move up and down. These are very hard to find and this would be a nice project but again…it will require a ton of work. If interested, best bet is to come and look at it in person as I will not be sending any additional pictures. It’s rough and if you think you may want it just send me an email with your contact info and I’ll get back to you so you can come and look it over. If it’s not sold by next week, unfortunately it will be heading to the scrap yard but I thought someone may want to give it a home before it heads to it’s grave never to be seen again.”

3Taps Countersues Craigslist for Anticompetitive Behavior

• CATEGORIES: News This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

3Taps has pulled off the gloves.   The company that produced one of the best national search mechanisms based on Craigslist data has filed a counter suit against Craigslist claiming the company’s behavior is anticompetitive.  I can’t help but think that 3Taps has been angling for a fight with Craigslist since its inception.  It have to know Craigslist would go after them, as it has been sending Cease and Desist letters to other sites for years.  This results of this suit could resonate throughout secondary marketplace communities.  For example, there were websites that combine eBay listings with other auction listings, providing a one stop auction site.  eBay used Craiglist’s tactic of C/D letters to shut them down.  So, the decision may define the meaning of ‘public information’ and may also decide if/when/where classified ads/auction ads constitute copyrightable material.

The CEO of 3Taps Greg Kidd says,

While  we  respect  what  craigslist  has accomplished in the past in  attaining dominance over online classified advertising, we object to them using that market power illegally to stifle innovation and hurt consumers.  As  craigslist  spends  heavily  to  bully  and  intimidate  companies  that  challenge  them, consumers  are  deprived  of  better  ways  to  find  and  execute  real-time  exchange transactions.

Craigslist  uses  its  monopoly  position  to  achieve  huge  annual  profits without sinking any meaningful costs into research and development or innovation.  In other categories – most notably  in the hotels and  airline bookings marketplace – there has  been  openness  and  continual  evolution,  yet  craigslist  has  gone  in  the  opposite direction,  using  its market  position  to  remain  stagnant  despite  massive  consumer demand for an updated and enhanced user-experience.
In bringing our antitrust counterclaim, we hope to stop craigslist from engaging in an illegal scheme to shut down  third-party  services and products that enhance the use of postings made on craigslist and provide innovative and more useful ways to effect the exchanges the public seeks.

The Rare 1945 Christmas Al-Toy: Do you have one?

• CATEGORIES: Features, toys This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Credit Colin and Glenn for uncovering this information.

A rare 1945 Christmas Al-Toy that was on eBay recently

Mr. Stub Cole, at the right, and Harold Bell, Sales Manager for Willys, at the left, seated at a table with an unnamed WGN radio announcer. On the table is an Al-Toy Jeep and on the bookcase behind Mr. Bell is another Al-Toy Jeep and a smaller model of a Jeep towing a trailer.

“About one year ago, Glenn Byron and I became involved in correspondence with Mr. and Mrs. David (Sue) Cole, part time residents here in Arizona and Michigan. The conversations revolved around the story that David Cole’s father, “Stub” Cole had gone to work at Willys in the latter part of 1945 for the purpose of getting the farm implement accessories and documentation then being supplied for Jeeps out to the dealer network. He left his
family in Michigan and lived in a couple of hotels in Toledo during the time he worked at Willys.

During this time, he took home a tan Al-Toy Jeep for David’s brother and at Christmas 1945, he brought two more Al-Toy Jeeps home. One was tan, like the first one, but the third Jeep, which he gave to his wife, was done differently than the others. It was silver, with a red interior and the underside was painted green. The wheels were cream colored and it had a spare tire mounted on the right rear fender. The Cole family always called this the Christmas Jeep due to its Christmas colors. As close as the family can remember, Stub left Willys in about April or May of 1946 and returned to Michigan.

Fast forward to 2011. David and Sue are trying to plot some of their family history and realized that David still had his original Al-Toy Jeep from 1945. They contacted the remaining family and learned that David’s brother’s tan Jeep and the “Christmas Jeep” were still in the family. With that, Sue began searching the internet for anything on Al-Toys and came up with Glenn’s name. She contacted him and he replied, copying me on the correspondence. Photos of the three Jeeps were sent to both of us and we realized the “Christmas Jeep” was indeed special and we made arrangements to meet with the Cole’s at their winter home in Cottonwood, AZ. Glenn and his family were on a vacation out west, to coincide with the FC Roundup here in Phoenix and we also got to meet Dave and Ann at the FC Roundup as well. We arranged to meet the Coles in Cottonwood on March 25th and look at the Al-Toys and share their findings on Willys history where their father was involved.

The  photos below show the 1945 Christmas Al-Toy Jeep and a tan one in their original condition in March, 2012. We talked about the condition of all three Jeeps and possible things to do with them. The two tan Jeeps had been played with and had some pencil markings left over from nearly 70 years ago and there were a couple of items that they would like to have repaired, but wanted to leave the Jeeps as close to their original condition as possible.

The first photo shows how bad it looked after we pulled up the decking.  The second shows the deck  partially done.  There was quite a bit of rot in those joists.

Jeep Accessory Manual (Reprint) on eBay

• CATEGORIES: Books, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This might be an interesting book.

“Jeep Accessories Special Parts and Major Assemblies for All Models” This is a reprint of the book that originally was used in a Jeep dealer’s parts department so that customers could order accessories. You will find illustrations and the original part numbers, which are still useful today because most parts vendors still use Jeep’s numbers to keep track of their parts. Use this book to make your search for parts both quicker and easier. The black and white illustrations in the book will help you to identify parts. Covers heaters, defrosters, radios, windshield washer, windshield wiper kit, locking fuel cap, power brakes, spotlight, slack adjuster, mirrors, gasoline filter, mud flaps, canvas tops, CJ-5 hard enclosure, pintle hook, bumper weight, step, bumper guard, governors, draw bar, propeller shaft guard, skid plate, and a few more. The book also includes engines and axles available for purchase from Jeep. You can use this catalog to find out which features on your car are accessories, if those accessories are original, and which accessories you can add. Find out which accessories interchange with other years and models covered in this book. All Jeeps from 1957-1962 are covered, including CJ-3B, CJ-5, CJ-6, DJ-3A, pickup, station wagon, FC 150, and FC 170. The manual measures 8 ½ x 11″, has 22 pages, and is in new condition.
