Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. (08/15/2012) Here’s an unusual CJ-5. It appears to have been modified by the same people/person who created these other modified jeeps, an observation I’m basing on the top. Given the jeep is from Hesperia, there’s a very good change it is the same group. Note that the jeep was stored for more than three decades.

paint, interior, and engine change where done around 1960, was owned and customized by a california car customizer in the fresno area

We were hunting jeeps, as we do anytime we are traveling in the car, when I heard Ann shout, “That’s a camel . . . NO, that’ s horse . . . No, that’s a Camel.”
Those weren’t words I expected to hear as we drove into the small town of Waitsburg, Washington, just a short drive north from Walla Walla. But, sure enough, there amongst two cows was a Camel eating some feed. It’s just strange the things you can find when you start looking.
In the January 1950 Issue, Modern Mechanix took the Jeepster and Station Wagon for test drives. Below is page 1. You can see all the pages at the Modern Mechanix Blog. In summary, the review isn’t all that flattering.

This looks solid. The top isn’t attached, which is why it doesn’t look quite correct.

“1953 CJ-3A Willy’s Jeep – Rare High Hood!!! 1966 289 Mustang motor. New leaf springs, wheel cylinders, brakes. All original except motor, runs great. Two year old top and doors, ready for hunting or play.”
It sure looks like there are some parts worth saving. This was taken in The Republic of Djibouti, Africa, and posted on Flickr. After some searching, I discovered these are probably Hotchkiss (see m201 website).

It runs and drives.
“For SALE OR TRADE 1946 Willys Jeep cj-2a (CLEAN TITLE IN HAND) the price of $3500 is negotiable, as far as trades I will trade for a Kawasaki KLR 650 or similar endure type bike.
Has been converted to 12 volt. Engine has been replaced with the 134 F head. This is the engine that was used in the cj-3b’s among other vehicles, similar to the original flathead but the intake valves are in the head and the exhaust valves are in the block, providing slightly more power and reliability in comparison to the L head (flathead). This thing runs great, and has recently had these parts changed. (I have all of the receipts)

Doesn’t leak all over the place, and would make a perfect hunting rig / work horse, or you could just use it for fun, this thing is a blast to drive”

UPDATE: Price dropped to $1800. This looks like a good price and includes a winch. Note the customized windshield, too. The seller did correct the V-6 to a Flathead 6.
(08/03/2012) It looks like the rear axle has been updated, so that part of the running gear isn’t original. The driver side entrance has been chopped a bit.

“Rebuilt 1946 CJ2A. New body work, fresh paint. Lift kit about 4 inches. Brand new 33×10.50 bfg mud terrain km2s. Brand new black d window wheels. New seats, gauges, tail lights, head lights. Recent rebuilt motor. All new electrical. Grant steering wheel. Custom pro comp bumper. Gotta get rid of it. No garage or shop to keep it in.”

From the Vale Valley Website comes this story of one brother buying CJ-2A #No. 23995 for another. It’s written by Raymond Bleesz. You can see pictures of his jeep on the CJ-2A Page.
It is said that the Willys Jeep won the hearts and minds of all those who served in World War II, and that the jeep won the war.
My 1946 CJ2A jeep, No. 23995, was in the assembly line of production when the war ended.
This jeep with its “Go Devil” four- banger engine, a body from the Willys Ford Overland Co. in Toledo, Ohio, was one of thousands produced during the war years and later into preproduction civilian jeeps at the end of the war.
In 1990, this jeep was given to me as a birthday gift by my brother, who had purchased it from a good old boy in Frederick, Md., towed it across country and presented it to me upon his arrival here in Edwards. . . . . . .Read more below
