Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. “1946 Willys CJ3A (Lowhood). This was a running jeep and I disassembled to repair the typical rust in floor of tub. Lost interest and want to move on to my other projects. This jeep has tons of potential. 302 w/Ford toploader 4spd, Spicer 18 transfer case, Dana 44 rear w/Detroit locker, Dana 25 w/Disc brake conversion, Rancho springs, Full cage, Tilt column, Engine has a new Demon 4 barrel carb and Pertronix electronic ignition. Have all parts to build a nice jeep and some extras. To all you flakes this is a project so if you want a running jeep dont waste my time, Your going to have to work on this one a bit. I am open to any interesting trades or $2000 cash.”

No pics & no description. However, in the title the seller claims this only has 900 miles and is a “CJ2A Army Jeep”. So, who knows what this is.

“A nice 1947 Willy’s Jeep CJ2A with an Original Aluminum Hard Top with doors and a Bikini Top. This is a multiple year restoration while also a daily driver around the farm and to town (not a full restoration see Photos). Many many new parts and I’ll try to list most. It has seats and seat belts for four persons and a roll bar. Pintle and Ball hitch. All lights work. Has hard to find original glass front marker lights and original dash light. It looks and runs great. One photo shows gauges on dash working while engine is running (good oil pressure, volts etc.). Interior is in good condition, good upholstery and a full truck bed floor mat. Faults: parking brake not working, and steering is loose (I’m used to it) it needs the center Pitman shaft or just drive it like it is. Mileage may not be exact, but it is what shows on the working odometer. Also, this is not and never was a rust bucket. Any surface rust was repaired prior to painting a couple years ago. . . .”

From totophotos.org comes photos of these two jeeps that suffered through tornadoes almost fifty years apart. The flattie got the worst of it. There are a few other jeep photos at the site, too.

This ad was produced in 1947. Was that big bumper part of a service package of some kind? I’m surprised to see it appear in an ad.

Every thing works except the emergency brake
Includes oil bath air cleamer, PTO winch, and backseat.
Steering is very good, brakes stop on a dime. 98% rust free, has 2 brackets added to replace rusted ones. Glass good, not broken or replaced. Lights work – no signals. Rear differential has been locked, the front is standard. 4X4 works excellent. Body is very straight, no dents. Top speed is 35-40. Will go faster but is low-geared.

(01/26/2012) “*1942 FORD GPW* Too much to list: Fully restored from the ground up. Ford Flathead engine completely rebuilt and machined with only 132 miles on it. 12 volt electrical system. All new canvas (beach wood). The Axles have been rebuilt, the tranny and transfer case have been resealed. Complete steering system has all been rebuilt. New reproduction Ford radiator. New paint, tires, braking system, hoses, wires, etc. You name it, it’s been replaced with new Ford parts and ready to go. Allot of detail and time went into finding new “F” (Ford) marked parts, all the way to the bolt heads and tires for this restoration.”

I was looking up some PTO parts when I landed on the Jolly Jeepers website. According to their website, the Jolly Jeepers is Oregon State’s oldest jeep club, having been founded in 1962. Two of the jeeps owned by members are custom 6x6s. You can see more 6x6s here.
Coincidently, just before publishing this post, Blaine happened to send me pictures he took of one of these 6x6s at the Orphan Car Show hosted by the Studebaker Drivers Club in Oregon City, Oregon, this past Sunday. I’ve seen “Gator” listed both as a DJ-6 and a CJ-6, so I’m not entirely sure what the base platform was.
