Hurray!  Thanks to both John and Joshua (who gave me the original glass covers).  Now, I’ve got glass, honeycombed light covers with some real chrome covers (as opposed to my painted ones).  This has been one of those lingering projects that it’s nice to have completed.

More updates later (after I eat some dinner).

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

year_cj2a_worcesterUPDATE:  Still available

Here’s a running CJ-2A  with a fiberglass body for only $800.  Sounds like a great price to me.

“I have s Jeep Willys CJ2A the odometer reads 75,000 but it could have turned over or could have been replaced. It runs good on the choke (it needs carb work) the frame seems to be in really good condition, the body is fiberglass and seems to be in okay shape there is some cracks and chips. It will run and move under its own power, the clutch doesn’t engage right probably from sitting, the transmission shifts fine all three gears and the transfer case work, but the levers are worn so it’s kind of hard to switch gears in the transfer case. It also appears to have half a 12 volt electrical system in it, meaning it starts and runs on 12 but all the lights are still 6. I have the doors to with the top and a parts CJ2A to go with it. $800 obo. Call me at (802)-223-2752”

James writes, “this is a 1946 VEC CJ-2A #18526, column shift, driver’s indents, no rust. original docs and rear glass light”

1946_cj2a_mccallHere’s a VEC with a VIN #11325.

“This is an early 46 # 11325 ( some might call it a 45). It was a column shift and somebody put it on the floor. It has military differentals, windshield hardware, steering wheel and oil filter that says (military standard) on it.. This is a running jeep that could be put on the road. All I can see it needs to be original is a driver seat and be put back to column shift. The gas tank has had a few holes plugged, and is not leaking. The body is in good shape and has very little rot for its age as you can see in the pictures.”

Willys Hy-rail Vehicles

• CATEGORIES: Willys Trucks, Willys Wagons • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Here’s a great website operated by a guy named Dave for Willys Wagon lovers called Willys Country. He wrote telling me he had a single page up for a while, but chose a few months ago to expand it into the present version.  In particular,  The Willys Hy-rail Vehicles Page of the website has some great pictures of willys designed for the railway that I’ve never seen in one location.

The site also covers normal wagons, 3 door willys wagons4 door wagons, a 3 door wagon that came with a suicide back door, a limo used at an airport, and more.  And how about the flattie with the soft half top — I haven’t seen many of those tops in that style.

If you happen to see some of the rare Willys Wagons he seeks, please contact him via his website, as he does attempt to track them.

From the website:

Willys made a variety of Hi-rail vehicles – trucks and wagons – for use on both highway and railroad tracks. These were US manufactured and titled by Fairmont and referred to as Hi-rail vehicles. Hy-rail is short for Highway-railroad.

Fairmont Railway Motors Inc, located in Fairmont, MN, developed road-rail technology in the 1940s to improve flexibility of vehicle use for railroad maintenance. Fairmont was bought by Harsco in the late 1980s. Hy-rail is still a trademark of Harsco Track Technologies and they still sell conversion kits called Hy-Rail Guide Wheel Attachments.

“We have a 1947 Willy’s Jeep, white with Blue seats and top. It was pieced together with 1942, 46 and 47 parts in the late 1980’s, trailered from Arkansas to Michigan in the early 1990’s and has been stored in a pole barn since then. The body is in good condition, the engine runs, it does drive but it does seem to ‘eat’ batteries. My husband and I don’t have the time or resources to work on the jeep and hate to see it set. It comes with the spare tire and the gas can that hooks to the side. There is a title to this jeep, and it was licensed back in 1994.”

1954_m38a1_voloUPDATE: Was $20,000.**SOLD**  According to the IMCDb.org, the only M-38A1 used during the movie can be seen here and was only involved in a minor clip.  So, I would suggest reviewing the movie as a first step ….

This is an interesting jeep.  One of the more unusual features, according to the sales blurb,  is that it’s rigged to run on propane to reduce exhaust fumes, because it was run on a closed set for much of the filming.  I have to wonder if it’s not a trademark violation for the seller to be using the Indian Jones label as shown …

THIS IS THE ACTUAL 1954 WILLYS M38 THAT WAS USED IN THE MOST RECENT “INDIANA JONES” MOVIE.  ANY CAR OR PROP USED IN A SPIELBERG MOVIE ARE NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE TO GET BECAUSE SPIELBERG WANTS THEM TO BE DESTROYED SO NO ONE CAN PROFIT OFF OF THEM. Shortening a Steering Shaft

• CATEGORIES: Biscuit This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

A reader asked me about shortening a steering shaft.  Here’s one place I shortened a shaft I took out of a late 80s cherokee to put in my jeep.

Frankly, I don’t remember exactly what I started with, but I took a solid steel driving shaft and slipped it inside the cherokee shaft.  Then I welded the two together.  As a safety measure, I also drilled a hole and added a bolt with a self locking plastic ended nut to insure the nut doesn’t come off.

I used the same technique on the other end to get the correct fit for the steering column.

Camino de la Muerte

• CATEGORIES: International This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

I’ve been sick the past couple days and have been watching way too much poor quality TV.  However, I did manage to find a great Discovery Channel show about the Camino de la Muerte (the Road of Death) that runs from La Paz, Bolivia, to a height of 15,000 feet and then downhill into the Yungas region of Bolivia.  In 1995, the Inter-American Development Bank listed the road as the most dangerous road in the world, with an average of 100 – 300 deaths a year (various sites were reporting differing averages). This page has a large number of pictures of the road.

Based on the Discovery Channel show, I can see why it’s dangerous, but I have to say it was hard to take the driver/narrator of the show seriously when he indicated being frightened.  After all, it is a flat road, albeit with a steep drop off to one side.  Just drive slowly and you’ll be fine. I guess I’ve been on enough hair raising, difficult jeep trails that I find it hard to take the ‘fear’ portion of the road of death seriously.

That said, if I ever do my round-the-world jeep trip, it will be high on my list of must visit roads.

Below is an image that was part of an article about Bolivia, however a reader named Allen identified it from a Warn Winch Ad, as seen on this page.  It was taken on a formerly narrow section of the Black Bear Pass Road.
