One of the more interesting early modifications for water fording is visible in the picture below. Note how the jeep facing the reader has the exhaust vented out the front of the grill with the muffler laying parrallel to the grille. I can’t say I’d ever seen that before.
The CJ-3A.info page notes: “The recommended maximum fording depth of an unmodified jeep was 21 inches. That is about the height of the fuel pump and transfer case vents. Any deeper and things would start to fill up with water. Even at this relatively shallow depth the Technical Manual (2) advised that the generator brace should be “pulled up to release tension on the fan belt and stop the fan from throwing water over the engine”. That would be important in order to keep water off the ignition system. During a combat landing the 21″ maximum fording depth was not adequate.”
When readers comment on a post, I always get a copy of the comment emailed to me. I had thought that readers who post a comment also received an email anytime there is a followup comment to a post.
Well, it turns out I was wrong about this feature (thanks to Robert for making me aware of the issue). So, I did some research and found a plugin for wordpress that solves the problem.
Now, if you post a comment related to a post, you’ll be sent an email anytime someone posts a follow up comment. This should help mightly with cross reader communication on posts.
Thanks, Dave
I can’t tell if this is an early ’46 or not. Only one pic provided.
“1946 Willys Jeep. Newer motor and charging system. New top and seats. Ready to show or drive. Needs nothing! $3,900.00 Firm. Contact Herb at 315-687-9805.”
“I have a 52 wills cj-3b high hood. I had the jeep running about a year ago when i got it since then the starter stoped working so at this time does not run. The frame axles and engine are all in good cond its a good solid base to start a resto on. The body as you would expect is in rough shape but the frame looks good. all the running gear is there and it would make a great project.”
This might have some possibilities.
“DJ 3A delivery jeep. Was originally 2 wheel drive but converted to 4×4. Have original running gear. Runs but needs seats. Body in very good condition. $1,200.00 O.B.O.”
“1953 willys 3a jeep this is a project ,has dana 27 front and dana 44 rear,t90 transmission, dana 18 transfercase,2 inch rancho springs and rancho shocks, tilt steering wheel, rollbar, warn hubs, two gas tanks. Also have warn overdrive that i will sell for $850.00 “
This looks great.
“This is a fine example of an early Willys Jeep, which has had lots of recent repair and upgrade. The frame has been reinforced and it has some mild lift springs. The front axle has Warn locking hubs. The rear taillights are aftermarket lights much brighter than the original for safety. A roll bar has been installed for safety….. “
The body looks like it’s seen some good work. The grille lights are unique.
“$ 3000 O.B.O 327 Engine with 4WD rare willys transmission, has been all rewired, newer paint job, comes with extra set of powder coated wheels. MAKE AN OFFER!!! Call for further details anytime…989-620-4710”
This might be a pretty good price. Only one pic, but I don’t see any serious issues.
“1952 WILLY M-38, ASKING $4000, BODY GOOD RUNS GOOD, FOLLOWING PARTS AREA ALL NEW, ALTERNATOR PLUGS, DISTRIBUTOR OIL PUMP, CARBERATOR PLUG WIRES, GAUGES TIE ROD, SPEEDOMETER BALL JOINTS, BRAKES WHEEL CYL, TIRES GAS TANK, HAVE ALL SEAT AND ROOF FRAMES.”
Apparently, the seats aren’t so nice anymore? Not sure what that means.
“47 willys, jeep, kaiser, with original 4 cyl. flathead that has been completely professionaly rebuilt with warranty and reciepts to prove the build. 4 speed transmission with dual stick transfer case. This baby has factory PTO but the previous owner removed the factory winch and i have not been able to relocate it through the records nor find a replacement, however the pto system does work. very little surface rust, virtually nothing on the underside rust related.
Tons of new parts for the engine and drivetrain ….”
It’s one of the cleanest jeeps around? I’d hate to see the dirty ones.
“46 WILLYS JEEP MILITARY JEEP — 4X4 WORKS — LIGHTS AND WIPERS WORKS —- CLEAR TEXAS TITLE IN HAND—NEW WIRING AND FORD PINTO MOTOTR —EXCELLENT CONDITION FOR THE YEAR AND MILES. THIS IS ONE OF THE CLEANEST AROUND YOU WON’T BE DISSAPPOINTED.”
This pics are crappy, but you can see enough to see this is an unusual truck.
“1957 willys jeep. me and dad built this from the ground up it is awsum.. the body is channeled over the frame. its choped. it has a 350 thats not stock….you have to see in person…it is deff a head turner for sure
“PROJECT JEEP : This 51 Willy’s jeep has a great running chasis and lots of new parts in boxes, including a new wiring harness. The motor is a 283 built .030 over and will start with a battery and some gas. Has power steering box already hooked up and 2 steering columns . All running gear has been gone through including axels and tranfercase and ROCK CRUSHERS TRANS .LOTS OF PARTS NEED to sell ASAP moving . If the Jeep is still here after Saturday it will be moved to 89 ave and bell rd. “
This jeep has some great drive train upgrades. With the seller willing to negotiate, this might become a pretty good deal for someone.
“I have a ’47-ish Willys jeep for sale. It has a Buick 225, SM420(I think), Dana 300, Dana 30 front, Dana 44 rear. The Willys needs a little work; the headlights need to be installed and wired and the cooling system needs help. The wiring is very simple, a few butt connectors and everything will light right up. I think the radiator needs to be flushed to clear a few blocked tubes, nothing major. The battery will need to be charged, but the Willys starts and runs just fine; ‘tiI it gets too hot. I have a clear AZ title that is ready to be notarized and turned over to the buyer. Because it is a 1947 vehicle no emissions are required. With a little work this Willys will be a great little machine. Let me know if you’re interested. $2700 OBO. I’m willing to negotiate a reasonable price, please reply with your phone number. Thanks, JN Crowe.”
“1947 Willys Jeep CJ 2A 4×4, Flathead 4 cylinder Original motor AND an additional motor!
Converted to 12 volt system- Great Restoration Jeep, This jeep has been garaged for 7 years in sunny/dry Arizona. It ran previously but needs gas and a battery. Drive train tight and solid. Very minimal rust spots on seat. My loss is your gain. I bought it for a project car and know I won’t get around to it. This jeep is really clean compared to most projects. Others have been parked in a field exposed to the elements. Great restoration shape. Many more pictures on demand if you are serious about purchase. You will need to salvage title as none exists. You must pick up and trailer it away.”
This trucks looks like it might be in very good condition. Willys truck and wagon prices aren’t generally that high anyway, but this might be a particularly good deal. I’d like to see a few more pics.
“Rare Fine 4X4 1952 Willys Short bed truck, yes it need some work like plug wires, radiator, battery, water hoses, other than that it all their, great cab and front end not rusted, I willing to trade?? but you can buy it for $1400.00 ;look on E-Bay They sell for lot more. cell 541-991-0949 ”
This jeep appears to have a fiberglass front clip.
“Alum. Buick V-8. Runs great, 3-spd.”
This jeep looks rough. The front clip appears to be tilting down a bit. The wheels looks good.
“1950 Jeep Willys, 3 spd, v6, extra rollbar, extra set of wheels, working heater, brand new soft top that cost 1600. This jeep is all old school! it is a blast in the snow and mud, it just doesn’t quit! I really hate to get rid of it, but I have other hobbies and not enough time. Someone is really going to have some fun in this jeep”
UPDATE: Price dropped to $2250
This ad includes links to a variety of upclose images. I think it gives a pretty honest look at the vehicle (wish all ads were this good).
“1942 Willy’s Jeep (flat fender) with Chevy 350 engine, new Borg Warner T150 transmission, Advanced adapter plate to engine/bell housing, transfer case bearings new, new battery & Quadrajet carburator, fuel filter & line. The engine has double hump 2.02″ heads and I was told it was out of a ‘70’s Corvette. The tires have a ton of tread on them and look like they’re very new. The motor turns over easily and idles just like a V8 should. This Jeep is setup well with Saginaw power steering, line locker parking brake and 2 jerry can 5 gallon fuel can holders. Since it’s a Military Jeep, it’s also got the shovel storage on the driver’s side.”
Oliver Missing operates a unique website out of Germany. He is drawing all kinds of vehicles of the red army, whether they were built, borrowed or hi-jacked from other other countries. Started in 2003, Oliver now has over 1,000 drawings, including 5 different ‘jeeps’: a Bantam BRC-40, Willys MA, Willys MB, Ford GP, and the Ford GPA. The drawings are created using Jasc Paint Shop Pro and Xara Xtreme. He plans to do many more drawings as time permits.
Here’s a couple of drawings:
Here’s a nice looking CJ-3A (though this would benefit from a different hood design).
“1950 Willy’s Jeep CJ3A. F-head 134 motor, warren overdrive, winch, new Tiger top. Runs Great. $3,500.00 or trade for a newer 4 wheel drive quad.”
I can’t say I’ve seen a bantam trailer with a top like this, though I’m no expert on Bantam Trailers.
“Bantam T3 Trailer WWII Serial number 9334. 1940’s Bantam T3 Trailer from world war two. It was recently sandblasted primed and painted 4 years ago. This was my grandfathers and it is very rare to find a Bantam trailer with a Top like this. I am in need of a larger cargo trailer. 12ft trailer needed and will trade. Please call 269-449-8900 or email for more information at spoon_m@hotmail.com. The following site is a forum for these trailers. Serial number is 9334. I know this is a collectors Item to the right person and I really am not looking for it to leave unless trade or this price. Thanks for checking it out.”
Jim’s selling his hot rod. Jeeps seem to be like cats, you never real own them, only take care of them for a while.
“This is our beast, our grunt wagon, I took this heavily modified Jeep in trade on a full military M38 jeep I was selling a couple years ago thinking that I had no interest in a V8 powered Willys. Then I started driving it, and playing with it, and liking it, really liking it, it is a beast, a powerhouse, it is the grunt wagon. I’ll try to list everything that’s been modified, rebuilt, changed etc, the list is long. A little warning here, please don’t buy this rig for your teenage son, it has way too much power for someone lacking experience. I would have killed myself in this thing at that age as nearly 300 HP in a 2400lb short wheel base, lifted flat fender jeep does not have a very large margin of error. ”
“1948 JEEP CJ-2A, PLOW, SOFT TOP, AND MANY EXTRA PARTS. GARAGE STORED WHEN NOT DRIVING OR PLOWING.”
