Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. “1948 Willys CJ2A. Completely restored about 5 years ago with framed 302 CI V8, C4 auto transmission, CJ7 transfer case/axles and powder coated frame. Originally a California car and lived in dry desert climates. Garage kept. Small chips in the paint, but in decent shape overall. Small crack on each windshield panel. Shallow quarter-sized dent on the front driver side fender. Rear plastic fender flares need to be replaced.

This March 21, 1943, photo and article highlight Rockridge School’s (Elementary?) WWII war efforts.

“1942 VEP GPW 5571942 Ford GPW Serial Number 557, Date of Delivery 2/26/42. Valid Texas Title in my name. This is one of the first of the 8000 jeeps built by Ford built on a Willys frame. Produced in the Dallas Ford Plant on the 10th day Ford started producing jeeps. This is a rare jeep that is in good shape for the age with allot of original hard to find parts. Frame and Data Plate serial numbers match. Engine is a replacement willys engine rebuilt by the previous owner.
This jeep needs a full restoration. This jeep as been taken apart. I assembled it for ease of shipping. Frame – Willys Frame Stamped GPW-557. Front and Rear frame horns will need repaired, Front crossmember will most likely need replaced. Otherwise very straight.
Tremaine’s friend is selling this. I’m not very familiar on the values of these.

Has typical J truck rust, but better than most in the northeast. Comes with extra fenders, doors, hood, seats and other parts. I purchased it out of CT so no title, but I’ll be happy to fill out paperwork to get a registration for it. “1946 Military Willys CJ2A has a lot invested into it. I have really enjoyed it but it’s time to part ways. It needs some work. Pm for more details it won’t let me type anymore. Needs timing and has exposed wires. I didn’t do the build but you can tell by looking what it’s got! It’s an all custom build and one of a kind. It’s not a Willy’s title as that was lost a long time ago. So what it has is a Clean Suzuki samurai title from the frame, engine, and transmission. It’s powered by a rebuilt fuel injected samurai motor and transmission which is a 1.6L 4 speed manual transmission with 4hi and 4L. It has brand new spark plugs, plug wires, distributor motor, Distributor cap, and rotor. 5.13 gears with a rear E-locker that is geared to be on all of the time, Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60 front and rear axles, FJ60 leaf springs, and FJ60 front manual center locking hubs. Make offer. No low ballers please.”
Seller is keeping the body and VIN and selling the rest (mostly sounds like the power train and chassis).

“I’m selling everything but the cab/tub and everything in it. I will be keeping the VIN and title. May also keep the radiator. I’d like to sell the frame, rolling on axles with the engine, transmission, and transfer case as one complete unit. It’s a 1953 CJ3A with a V6 swap. Not sure if it’s an odd fire or not. I drove it to where it’s been parked for about a year. I believe the master cylinder needs to be replaced. I’ll try to get it running for a serious buyer before I remove what I’m keeping. The July 27, 1943, issue of the Philadelphia Inquirer included two photos of the newly developed “Amphibious Jeep”. The writing on the side of the top SEEP reads, “Ike’s Invasion Taxi”.
This October 21, 1946, article describes the effort one jeep driver made in hopes of saving a dying soldier and the confusion of trying to find their aid station.
These two pre-1940 news items highlight how “jeep” and “jeeping” already had definitions prior to the launch of Bantam’s prototype.
In 1937, this article on “Jeeping” as a swing dance, as testified in court by Detective Fred V. Boye, was widely distributed among newspapers. I have been unable to isolate exactly what moves define the “jeeping swing dance”. This example article comes from the July 28, 1937, issue of the Park City Daily News out of Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Two years later, in 1939, a couple of Washington State vagrants (no, they aren’t relatives of mine) got caught “jeeping” pin ball machines using a “jeep”. A woman, along for the ride, even had a marijuana cigarette! This article is from the November 29, 1939, issue of the Green Bay Press Gazette:
I thought I would win this auction, but I didn’t bid quite high enough. It looks like an interesting book. The guy who sold it on eBay said he used it to build a “bullet proof” AMC 360 engine. This book was printed in 1993.

“1941 Willis MB Military “B” or what became the “jeep” The MA was the prototype this is the redesigned MB pre-war late 1941 production note the distinctive welded slat grill. After 1942 this was changed to a stamped grill. Newer seats, brakes are free, replaced the fuel tank, fuel pump. Turns over but needs a battery.”
