Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. “1954 M-170. This is a Korean-War-era military field ambulance/radio vehicle made by Willys. This particular Jeep was a radio vehicle, not ambulance. Radio switches/gauges and antenna mount present, but radio equipment gone. Was a ranch Jeep for past 42 years.
Drivetrain and axles are stock with minor exceptions. Ignition was converted to 12-volt and generator replaced with Delco alternator with external regulator by previous owner. Also, civilian carb was installed on the stock 134-cube F-head. Transmission is stock T-90 and T-case is factory twin-stick Spicer 18.
Looks good for the price.

Has had body work at one point, steel plates added in bed, missing some body supports. We use it all the time driving around Carrabassett. “Original restored flat-fender Willys Jeep. Runs great, does not smoke or burn oil. No drips or leaks. Does not pop out of 2nd gear. Rebuilt flathead engine and tranny/transfer case. Re-cored radiator. All new hoses and wiring. New seat upholstery. New rear springs. Comes with new vinyl Tiger-Top. Includes tow bar and towing lights. Everything works: gauges, lights, vacuum-tube radio, heater, vacuum wipers, cigarette lighter, etc. New master cylinder and brake lines. Original 6v electrical system. Fresh paint. Recent shocks and u-joints. Added turn signals and seat belts for safety (and passenger-side tail light), and off-road lights; otherwise all original. Original rims go with it but not installed. NO RUST. No “Willy’s Wobble”. Current CA registration. Clear title.

“What was supposed to be a rattlecan overhaul, turned into a full blown restoration that consisted of over 700 hours of labor and a significant monetary investment. This Willys has been a southern California native since new with very little rust, and has not had any accidents nor has it endured farm work, off road abuse or butchering by its previous owners.
It started as a solid and original foundation that we expertly crafted into what is being offered for sale now. As a father and son team with over 40 years of automotive mechanical, engineering and restoration experience, we undertook this project with personal pride and without the intent of selling it. However, circumstances have changed, new projects are on the horizon, and it is now being offered for sale. We have the clean CA title and current registration in possession.

(04/20/2014) This includes an early Belleview winch. Was the chrome piece on the hood some kind of aftermarket item? It seems to fit pretty well.

“Nearly complete 1955 M38A1. Military version of the CJ 5. F134 Hurricane “MD” marked Military Engine. Correct 24 volt system. Correct carburetor, distributor, and drivetrain. Correct blackout lamps.
Dry New Mexico jeep. Rust only in passenger floor and fuel tank floor well.
Only missing wipers, correct spark plug wires and plugs, top bows, and top.
Clear title. Drives and runs. Registered and insured.

“I have a 1954 army jeep. The jeep starts and runs very well. The body and frame is in excellent condition for the year. Has been taken very good care of over the years. The jeep has five new tires and a nice canvas top. The floors are solid. This a must see jeep if looking for one. The speedometer and fuel gauge does not work the mileage showing about 8000 but I have no clue on correct miles if interested or have any questions I will be happy to try to answer them. (05/07/2014) This looks good, especially for the price. Includes an overdrive.
“Hello, up for auction is my 1953 Willys CJ3A. This Jeep is an excellent example of “survivor” and is mostly original. I am the 3rd owner of this Willys. I purchased it from the 2nd owner in 2012. He owned the Jeep from 1962 to 2012. I was told the Willys was owned by the State of Maryland from 1952 to 1962 but I have no documentation of this. The mileage currently shows as 51250 and is the original mileage.”
The Willys is a 1953 according serial number but is titled as a 1952, this is very common. The build date falls in November of ’52, often new vehicles were titled as the year they were sold in. The Jeep is mostly unmolested other than a repaint some years back by the 2nd owner. The paint is close to the original color. There is rust but the body is very solid. Sections of the hat channels, body sides where the floor meet them, and the rear panels are the worst of the rust. The floors and tool box botom are remarkably solid. If properly cared for the body will last for many years. The frame is solid and shows no cracking.

Family owned since new. It doesn’t run. Not 100% original, but is worth a look.
