(11/27/09) The seller doesn ‘t mention it, but it looks like this was built on a later model frame judging by the rear suspension. I haven’t seen many ‘woody’ mbs.

“1943 Vintage WWII Willys Overland MB Jeep 4X4 For Sale Serial Number: 213591 Mileage; 33,397 One of a kind 1943 Willis’ MILITARY JEEP MB 4×4 in great condition with custom black paint and wood grain exterior panels. This is a real head turner! The Jeep fires right up and runs great! The interior of the Jeep is just as nice as the outside with bucket seats, grey indoor/outdoor waterproof carpet, original gauges, and finished with custom wood grain, chrome accents and roll bar. The Jeep is powered by the original flathead 4 cylinder engine (gasoline), (which displaces 134.22 cubic inches (2,199 cc) with a 3.125 in (79.4 mm) bore and 4.375 in (111.1 mm) stroke. It is an L-head design, with valves parallel to the cylinders. Power output is 60 hp (46 kW) at 4000 rpm and 105 ft•lbf (142 N•m) at 2000 rpm with 6.48:1 compression.) The Jeep’s electrical system has been upgraded to a 12 volt battery. The headlights, tail lights and brake lights are in working order. The front auxiliary lighting have been installed, but not wired. The engine, transmission and transfer case have been professionally rebuilt. This looks to be a pretty good price.

“So here’s the deal. I bought this 43 willys flat fender from a guy in cave junction about a year and a half ago (10/08 to be exact) for $600 (it was on C.L.), as a project and to use for hunting. When I bought it the motor was out and mostly disassembled, which the motor is a 4cyl. chevy vega eng.. Well when I got it home and aftering ordering all the part’s ($300) and starting to put it back together I found out the block had been dropped at one point, not to mention there was 3 heely coils and 2 stripped bolts. So I got on C.L. and finally found another chevy vega eng. a guy was selling in vancouver Wa.. So I went, checked it out, and bought it ($300). I brought it home rebuilt it and put it in. So it has a rebuilt motor: rings/bearings/water pump/gaskets/etc., orig. 3speed trans. w/ split shift transfer case (I put a new clutch plate in also), Chevy tilt steering column, full roll cage, good tires, with lot’s of tread”

The body has a tailgate, so I doubt it’s an MB. It looks more like a parts jeep.

The seller indicates this is an easy restoration. I’m less sure about that.

“Good candidate for restoration into a very valuable piece of history. Currently selling for $10,000 plus in restored condition, this is an easy restoration. This Jeep is a late production unit and relatively complete, I can not see any rust through and has been an Arizona Jeep since released from the military 66 years ago. The engine is free, witnesses say it was running just before being parked, the sheet metal has some dents and damage but is certainly restorable, parts are readily available, and all four tires hold air. The original lights in front and rear are there including black out drive and park as is the original light switch. The floors are good and the original 6 volt army generator and large regulator are present. The fuel tank is missing as is the back seat frame. I have a few more pictures. Call 520-360-5074”

“This is one badass Jeep. Engine: completely rebuilt 4 cylinder, very simple and easy to maintain but still strong enough for a 4×4 off-road vehicle. Runs great! Four wheel drive with modern tires and rims (spare included)
Three-speed, floor starter. Paint is original US Issue Olive Drab Green with a white star on the hood. Its even got a row of machine gun bullet holes below the windshield. Straight out of M*A*S*H. Aftermarket roll-bar and bikini top. Overall its a great antique car with some military nostalgia.”

I’ve seen a few pics that show the jeep as a temporary place for worship. This is another image from Roy O. Bingham. The Library of Congress reports that in this pic, “Members of the Tenth Mountain Division, 605th Artillery Battalion, attend a Protestant Easter religious service at Rocca Pitigliano, Italy, conducted by Chaplain William H. Bell. In the foreground, four men bow their heads together. Corporal Ralph Squires sits at a portable organ and two soldiers face the Chaplain who stands in front of his jeep draped with a white cloth in use as an altar for a small crucifix.”

1942 Slat Grille MB Austin, TX SOLD

“1942 WILLYS “Stat Grille” (¼ ton General Purpose Vehicle) JEEP.

This JEEP has been fully restored to the military exactness as it came off the line in Toledo, Ohio on March 5, 1942. Military Serial Number is 124833 and common features included no glove box, a round muffler, oil bath air cleaner/air filter, rubber hood bumpers, solid wheels, two hinges on the tool box lids, three bolt spare tire carrier, no blackout driving lamps, makers name on the rear panel, and a slat grill on the WILLYS.

This early Jeep comes complete with a mounted Garand carbine replica, strapped ax and shovel, and canvas top, and the frame plate for machine gun mount.

All numbers match manufacturer’s designation: model MB, serial number, 124833, build number 24832, and official government contract numbers; 303-ORD-2529 and army quartermaster corp. 398-QM-888 order forms, and hood number assigned 2042364. “W” was added at the base to distinguish Willys from Ford in later runs. Original “Go-Devil” engine.

Around 200 slat grills are estimated to have survived through 2006, according to ARMY MOTORS, the official magazine of the Military Vehicle Preservation Assoc.

From there it served in the United States Army and was eventually retired to Ft. Bliss, OK as a base transport vehicle and was sold at public auction in 1955 to become a farm vehicle. Eventually it retired from its years as an agri-jeep to a salvage yard in Enid, OK where another farmer purchased it 1992 for $1,000. The present owner purchased it at a farm auction in Tuttle, OK on March 13, 2002 for the same $1,000. Although the Jeep was originally delivered to the government for $399.68.”

I cannot remember seeing any pics with a gun mounted on a step. However, in the comment below, Lester has clarified for me that guns were mounted in that position. He notes that in “the Squadron/Signal book,WWII Jeep in Action by David Doyle, there is a picture on page 41 of a maintenance crew of the 1st Armored division installing just such a mount in the exact same location.” Thanks for the detective work!

“You will not find one this complete. This one is in great shape. It is very clean. It is not a total restoration, since I like military vehicle to look like the are battle worn, not new. It needs a new paint job, which I have the paint to do it, and it comes with the jeep. This jeep is in great working order. It is in restored condition. It is not a complete restoration. It runs and drives great. Does smoke a little. All parts are here. It is a 6-volt system. Been totally rewired. All lights work. Canvas top is new. It is garage kept. Brakes are all redone, new gas tank and lines. Has medical box. The motor sounds great. The leaks are in normal spots, If not started every day will need to be primed to start. Rebuilt transmission, clutch plate. Rebuilt transfer case. Put on a new fuel pump, new distributor, new coil, and new sensors. All gauges are in working order. The is a new speedometer, so I don’t know the original miles. Brakes are new and work great…..”

“I am selling one of my projects. Very restorable WW2 jeep. The body is straight with the usual rust through in the hat channels and the fuel tank sump. The drive train is all original and complete. The frame is straight and solid, no rust throughs or breaks. The engine is a ’45 not sure if it’s the original. Email me for serial numbers. Now for the negatives. There is no title. I will provide a bill of sale. There are no seats. The one in the pictures goes to a GPW and is not included in the sale. Someone has cut the fire wall probably for a bigger engine.
