Photo of Jeep Jamboree Event on eBay

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images

UPDATE: You can view an article in which this photo appeared here. That link also suggests that the date listed for the photo below of Dec. 1958 is incorrect.

I just wish they showed more of the jeep! Is that a “Jeep” Dispatcher logo on the side? (see logo at the bottom). Looks like that jeep could be a DJ-3A. As for the Jeep Jamboree event, this one was help in Texas near South Padre Island. The same photograph below was featured in this article: http://www.ewillys.com/2012/08/25/1957-jeep-jamboree-from-texas/ (It seems I never scanned the article, I only posted the eBay pic, so I will get that done!)

“This is an original press photo. Jeep Jamboree relay race required the driver to bring back to his teammates a pennant that had been erected about 50 feet out in the surf. This fellow chose to keep his car dry and get himself wet by making the retrieval on foot.Photo measures 8 x 10.25inches. Photo is dated 12-09-1958.”

Corporal Fredrick Stokes in Japan

Stephen Stokes was kind enough to share this photo (via David Watson). It shows Stephen’s father, Fredrick Stokes, during his time in Japan with the US Army. The photo was taken between 1946-1948. If the bumper is accurate, it looks to be a GPW.

Sailing Sahara’s Sands by J. Mortimer Sheppard

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images, Old News Articles • TAGS: .

1956-02-globetrotter-african-sail-jeep0

When loose deep sand was encountered, the ‘Jeep’ had to pull both the yacht and the sedan. [ed note … this caption was included in the original article]

This article by J. Mortimer Sheppard appeared in a 1956 issue of the Globetrotter magazine. An author of multiple books, Shepard spent three years traveling around the globe on behalf of Willys as a correspondent in the mid 1950s. On one occasion, described herein, he pulled a land yacht behind a jeep to the Sahara desert so he could sail across parts of Africa, accompanied by his wife and children.

Shepard went on to write an article for Wide World Magazine titled First to Sail the Sahara. An 1800 mile journey with his wife and family in a sand yacht over the Desert in 1956 (it’s also been republished as a book, but this may be a modern item). The second, Sahara Adventure, is an actual book and probably a more complete account of the trip. I’ve just bought it, so I’ll report on it once I read it.
