“I have a very rare hard to find original ford script tub jeep. Ford was only able to brand their tub for a few months in 1942 before the government made them stop. There are very few of these original jeeps still around. I have a 134L engine for extra money. It comes with transmission and transfer case. Someone started putting power steering in it. No seats. Maury published a forum-thread on rebuilding his Ross Steering Box. He (and I) thought you all might find it interesting, too. He also wanted to ackowledge Moses Ludel for all his help (read their exchange here).

Here’s a note about Maury’s experience:
I suspect everyone knows who Moses Ludel is, as he has been involved with jeeps at a professional level for several decades. As you may be aware, he has written several excellent books on jeep rebuilding and maintenance, including the Jeep CJ Rebuilders Manuals and the Jeep Owner’s Bible. He is the administrator of the 4WD Mechanix website as well.
The original Ross TL steering gear in my 1967 V6 CJ5 badly needed rebuilding, and I really wanted to accomplish this with NOS parts to the greatest extent possible. Late last year, in researching possibilities for having the rebuild work done professionally, I came across a video on Moses’ website about rebuilding the Ross boxes in which he rebuilt one for a client. I contacted him to ask if he was still doing that kind of work on the side. He responded that he is not, but in short order, he got me interested in doing the rebuild myself. Moses offered to assist me through the process by helping me create a pictorial thread on his website, through which he could advise me as I worked through it one step at a time.
The resulting process of finding the parts and fully rebuilding and installing two Ross TL boxes (mine and my brother in law’s) is thoroughly documented in the two threads linked to above. The first thread is on the rebuilding process itself, and the second covers the installation and alignment of the gear. I found the DIY approach to be very rewarding, including the fact that I “had” to acquire several tools I didn’t own or know how to use before.
Moses’ help and advice were invaluable in successfully completing this project. He is a true guru of all things jeep, and I am grateful that he very generously spent so much time guiding me through this process. I hope these threads will be equally helpful to others who decide to try rebuilding their Ross gearboxes themselves.
John shared this a while ago. I’m just getting to posting it now. It’s a fun little video, partly because of the music, but also because of the wide variety of camera angles.

“1951 Willy’s Pickup 4wd Project Vehicle. It was used to drill holes for blasting. It is 4WD. It has a PTO that could be used for some other purpose like running a winch. It needs a distributor cap, plug wires, a coil and a battery. It has a straight 4 engine. The tires are not in good shape but would probably hold air long enough to get it on a trailer.
I am not willing to part it out or let you work on it for a few days to see if you can get it running.”

“The most awesome icecream truck available. Runs Great! Bright orange paint inside and out. Completely updated and re-wired lighting all LED. Flashing amber rooftop light. Exterior horn to blast your classic ice-cream tunes or get new age and rock some modern icecream tunes to get the kids hyped with the amplified sub in the back. That right! This truck has beats!!! I have beefed up the starting battery with a group31 semi truck battery. There is a secondary battery bank of 3 deep cycle marine batteries that power the DC converter which in turn powers the freezer. Back windows are tinted to reduce heat so the electronics can run efficiently. I replaced all the window seals with new rubber. I even installed a battery isolator so you can run the secondary battery bank until it’s completely dead and always have a fully charged ignition battery to start up with. I also have 256 color range LED undercarriage lighting that I will install this week. There simply is not any other icecream truck that come close to being as awesome as this one.”

What makes an Olive Drab paint “show quality”? Looks like a clean build, but not a restoration.
“This is a 1947 Willy’s CJ-3A Overland jeep, L-head engine, flat head 4 cylinder with T-90 transmission, 3 speed stick, high/low range transfer case, 4 wheel drive. Clean title.
This was a body off restoration completed in 2001, garage kept. The only system that was not an original replacement, is the electrical system, it has been upgraded from 6 to 12 volts. Generator replaced by AC delco alternator, system fuse box addition, two tail lights (instead of the original single on the drivers rear), directional kit with horn, turn key starter solenoid and grill fog lamps wired for directional, complete new wire harness. Body has no rust and has been undercoated with rubberized tar. Paint is olive drab and is show quality. Cooper military tires including spare. Jerry can and mount. Tailgate chains are dressed in military cloth and windshield had strap. New military seats. All gauges are functional, and even the emergency brake has been restored.
This vehicle is both fun to drive and show! My father and I enjoyed restoring it but since he has recently passed away I know longer enjoy it without him. Must sell!”

“The year is 1948. The war is over and back at home Willys has found a use for the much loved war jeep in rural America. This is that jeep and it is particularly unique in that is has its spare mounted on the left “a lefty” and has a PTO with the full hydraulic lift attachment for a 3 point farming hitch in surprisingly good condition.
